Better to ask when the Beta is in full swing. It’s going to be hard to get any consistent reports when people are lucky to have gotten a couple of games in.
It’s hard to gauge how good it is if I don’t know which part of the US the players are from. I don’t know if I’m playing Cali to Cali or Cali to Tennessee and etc.
I did play against someone with a Japanese flag and the connection was “alright.” I think they’re at the cusp of having some really good netcode though. I just don’t know how many of the people I played against were Wifi peeps. Some were super terrible connections, but I noticed the worse connections they have, the stupider they play. So I’m making the presumption they’re of the similar capacity to think that Wifi is okay.
I’ve been playing on wifi on the beta the whole time and have had about 8 solid matches and 2 that weren’t that great. the 2 just had a bunch of rollback. But the other 8 felt pretty damn good. It’s also hard to judge the netcode to me just because I feel completely handicapped playing with a pad right now so I don’t know if it’s me missing moves sometimes, doing them late, or inputs dropping.
I’ll be playing wired though once the real game comes out or even the next beta maybe. Just easier to play on my evo monitor in my family room with a 4 month old that I gotta keep an eye on.
One thing that concerns me is the fact that regions seem to be assigned simply based on what region your account is from (you can tell by the flags they assign).
I’d rather players be able to pick their own regions from a comprehensive list (like Skullgirls).
I also think that they must improve the netcode i played like 10-15 fights europe vs ameriaca and it was not really good alot of teleporting
I test today the same with usf4ps4 and it was for the most part fine an playable
One issue with the testing right now is that it’s you can’t really see the connection quality (aka ping times) of your opponent. So it’s impossible to know if you should expect a good connection (regardless of region), or not.
First time I got in before it was restricted to NA only, I played someone from USA, France, and Japan. The USA opponent felt just as smooth I could hope for online but there was a slightly noticeabel difference to offline, inputs and reaction not affected tho. The France opponent and the Japan opponents tho… YIKES. I couldn’t confirm or react to anything properly so it ultimately became a battle of cr. jab mashing to win.
Second time I got in when it was restricted to only NA opponents, the connections were still kinda all over the place, but like previously stated in this thread, its not a reflection of the netcode and more so the other person’s connection. Inputs on hit-confirms weren’t affected but reaction times to things like jump-ins were, and I kept noticing something weird were I would jump first with my air normal coming out, then the other person would jump into me with their own normal of same strength (j.RH vs j.RH), out-prioritizing mine which didn’t make alot of sense.
I was strangely very fortunate to get into the beta with only a mild bit of trouble. I even got enough matches in to gain two rank levels. Ranks: Beta Tester > Beginner Beta Tester > Beta Tester Fighter.
I live in Southern California, San Diego area. My internet connection is Cable with 100 down 50 up.
Here are my impressions:
First: There was no clear indictation of where specifically my opponent was besides showing Country. I didnt play anyone other than North America. So its hard to judge what my variables were.
As far as actual game play went; good connections felt great. At the beginning of each match I would just hit a random button to see if I could notice any lag delay. On a good connection I can firmly say that although I can visually see a slight delay I couldnt feel it. Unlike in USF4, even if you played a good connection you could notice a difference online, it didnt seem that way in SF5. Combo timing felt similar if not exact. The good connections really impressed me. Believe me when I say, as a guy who plays USF4 daily, SF5 is definitely an improvement. I cant say its vastly superior for sure, because once again, I dont know the area where I was playing anyone. But for those just hoping for an improvement; yes, its improved.
As for bad connections: Yeah I had a few. Much like GGPO fashion there was a slight roll back (skipping around). It was slight but noticeable and during combos it was jarring. It wasnt horrendous. I personally prefer roll back because bad connections still recieve the inputs even if its late. So if you block something last minute but you get hit then the game rolls back to where you blocked, if you can get your bearings back quickly, it doesnt feel as bad as random choppyness or slow down. In my opinion at least.
I had quite a bit of game time and Im not sure what anyone is specifically hoping for, so if anyone would like to ask questions feel free to ask.
i hope that when they relaunch the beta AND do the second wave of the beta this fall for both pc and ps4 that people who have a code currently will be able to enter into both. would kinda suck if you took time off work or whatever to play sf5, only for it not to work. then you go back to work and everyone’s playing it. by allowing current holders of codes into the second/third stages of the beta testing would be a good way for capcom to say sorry and thank you.
The netcode is a huge improvement over SF4. I only know of one confirmed west coast match that I played and it was against combofiend. The connection was similar to playing someone on ggpo in Japan, not unplayable but also not the best. Matches against other players were CLOSE to perfect and I’m assuming they were on the same coast. Overall quality is not as good as ggpo, but it’s a good step in the right direction.
The Six Flags in my area got it yesterday, going to try and enter a tourny tomorrow… (nevermind, tourny is only on Saturday and Sunday) I wonder if the build with Ken is there B)
i’m from europe so i didn’t pay for my beta code, i was invited after i applied on the sf5 website. therefore i was/still am confused as to whether or not i’m invited to all phases of it or not. it’s not clear on the website. sorry i should’ve been more specific. of course you guys that paid should have access to all phases, that would be ridiculous otherwise.
I wish I would have noticed where my first opponent out of the 5 matches I got to play before I was kicked was from. All the rest I noticed were from the US like me. Only one of those matches had a major slowdown moment. The rest honestly felt like offline play, it was so smooth.
