Need the s\d guru's help

kai, clock, devil

whats your guys hadest fight?
what assist gives you the most trouble? clops for me since he beats doom clean.
honestly, whats basic s\d? a few months ago it was staying away from my opponets options and mastering the trap. Now that I have those things mastered, i’m trying to implement more like setups that will allow the opponent to make mistakes, snap out tricks, overheads, many kinds of orb setups and re-orb patterns, well placed bombs for easy life. It seems the longer I play the team, the more I see and my idea of what basic changes. If strider needs every hit he can dish out, wouldn’t going for the things I mentioned be the things you would want to do?
whats the key to winning with s\d?
is s\d an offensive team or a defensive one? I’m really torn on this. I can do an offensive chain and start the trap but sometimes it seems that defense into trap works just as well if not better @ times. I usually get a good solid rep on the assist or on point whenever I use my defensive options but this can easily back fire if you get hit.
if I can read into the opponents strategies, should I be able to win?
whats the best way to beat someone who knows the trap?
have any of you guys ever thought about 1 hit kill strider? he has somethings ideally that would make him really deadly if the setup for it could be figured out. If the bomb can be implemented for a blocked orb or orbs during hit for a 50\50 consistently, his damage output:meter useage ratio would jump through the roof. Overhead scoot (qcf+lk) is good but bomb+j.lk does way more life
should I be looking to throw the opponent off there game somehow? I usually do this by mixing up my traps and backing off and counter hitting back into it. It back fires just as much as it works though.
is sent\doom actually as bad as I think it is?

it seems to me that people who understand the trap gives s\d the hardest fight.

it seems like its too much to ask for to be considered consistent. Its just not the strider fight. Its also the sent\doom fight in the beginning. If sent gets raped early, the times where you can abuse drones become limited.

bump

depends on how i’m feeling that day. If I’m focused, i will fight cyclops all day and not care just because i can already feel when he’s going to get called and build my entire rushdown around that. If I’m kind of out of it that day, i’ll end up not doing anything and in that case, commando and tron will give me headaches. But generally, I’ve kind of adapted to all the matches to the point where i’ll be willing to fight any match.

there is no one way or wrong way to play strider as long as you’re winning. Clock, Devil X, and myself are much more offensive than say Eddie Lee is with Strider/Doom. I actually started to occasionally turtle with Strider in certain matchups to add to my mind games ever since seeing Eddie Lee play at ECC. His turtling with Strider actually gave Potter some headaches during the team tourney. And hell, Potter is the lasts guy in the world I will ever expect to beat with Strider/Doom.

Essentially, the answer to the second question is the first one. If someone knows the trap, find out what he knows about it and how does he know it. When you know exactly what he is doing to beat it, find a way to beat what he’s doing. It’s like a game of chess.

I’ve played around with it. The best I could really get is 2 hit kill strider. But I’d generally not throw in too many resets when the opponent will eventually let you hit them himself after getting frustrated.

absolutely not. It’s just not braindead and easy like Sent/Commando is.

it seems that the biggest gap between our play is your exp. I guess theres no other way for me to really figure it out unless I put years into it against great comp. I was hoping there could be a substitute for lack of exp but I guess not. As of now, I only have 6-8 months against seasoned marvel players here in FL.

dammit I need the exp!!

do you think the overhead scoot (j+lk, qcf+lk) is too hard to pull off consistently?

I used to have this rule of thumb that if sent took half life and I had 2 meters, I would dhc into strider ASAP. That way i’m not stuck with sent assist with 30% life. I stopped doing this because I thought strider with meter could make up for the lack of drones but i’m starting to change my mind on that.

so whats better s\d with meter or ssd with 50% sent with very little bar?

whats the next major your going to be @ kai?

Keep playing mixup and you’ll get there. Months before ECC, ytwojay would own me like 50 straight matches in casual with his msp when i kept playing Sent/Strider/Doom in that order. It eventually led to me making my sentinel passable enough. About a year later after that, I’m finally confident in my sentinel in almost any match.

I’m very random with when i decide to DHC sent out. Sometimes I’ll keep him in and go for the OCV. Other times, I’ve DHCed him out with 2 or 3 bars when I thought I got a good opportunity. It’s almost like a coin toss. But generally, I’m more trigger happy about DHCing strider in than most other strider players.

Right now, my next (and very well could be my last) major seems to be Evo this year or Evo West. I can’t be too sure though because the struggling actor’s life is very random. I also kind of want to return to ECC this year, but I’ve been saving all my money over the last year (from lack of playing) to invest on a film I want to make with my friends. The tentative schedule also has post production in may, so even if I have the money, I may not have the time. Then again, if everything shoots on schedule and I still have some cash to spend, I may very well go.

hmm…

i’m going to go for one hill kill strider. He has to something that will give it to him. As of now, I know 2 hit kill strider but I have to hit someone early in orbs. Too bad I used up that clocw0rk throw combo. That thing worked like a charm for a while.

hope to see you @ evo though. I don’t know how good devil x is but I would like to see any good s\d player try to beat mixup.

thnx for the tips…

This is the only one i got of Devil X.

ahh thnx.

yea he’s good. He could of probably won that game too if it wasnt for that s.rh error.

I always wanted to see that kid play.

For that 1-hit kill he would have to pin the opponent pretty early in the trap and launch the bomb at the correct distance or I am thinking backwards?

its not that easy.

theres alot of factors that go into proper bombs for mixups. Ontop of that, it has to be perfect lockdown, the setup for a hit during orbs and block during orbs are going to be different, if you fuck up the pattern there has to be a way to continue the pressure, screen positioning is a factor and lastly you would probably need 2-3 setups for every scenario that will allow you to do it. Thats probably like 10-20 setups and thats going to vary on screen position. Gotta mixup the way it looks so the opponent is always off balance. usually the more setups you have, the harder is it for your opponent to figure out the trap.

i’m sure theres more to it than that because I haven’t figured it out yet.

i’ve thought about it for a while now and been trying to actually do it for a few months. Its just so damn hard to actually think of a way to do it everytime. I’m sure if we sat all the s\d heads in a room, we could figure it out.

Play different people

Go out more, play different people. Learn the other characters more. Like Sent and Doom. Try landing hits. Play safe, but avoid turtling. Try not to waste meter with Sentinel. Always keep an emergency meter with Strider unless the trap is flowing. Use ALOT of animals. They’re safer than you think. (Except against storm) Strider’s normals are pretty fast and can go head to head with storm, be corageous. Sentinel has no answer for Strider up close. Never trap in paterns. Always do something a little different each time to throw off the opponent, even if it’s an animal thrown right after activation, it’ll throw them off. Punish assists when you get the chance. Dash in, call drones, short teleport backwards works well to disorientate opponents. Doesn’t answer any of your questions, but I thought I’d throw some mish mash in!!

SOLIDUS

Storm’s c. lp is mad gay. It owns the tiger for free
Just thought I let everyone know.

instead of making a new thread, i figure i’d post here…
back in like 2003 i started using team duc and clockwork but didnt like losing so i took the MSP MSS santhrax path, avoiding doom and strider altogether… and my sentinel was never that solid… now 2007, i’m not playing as much but still play and i’ve decided to stick with strider/doom, mostly using clockwork …

was just wondering if there are any random advice or tidbits i could get from experienced strider players, don’t even need to post in the forums, PM is fine, i know the general stuff but small tidbits that you would only discover with experience for example , doom’s jumping jab has unreasonable priority , i’m a new strider player technically, i know the trap and how the game works but its hard to win with clockwork but hella fun to play the team so yeah

-peace out strider beasts-

Yeah, but it doesn’t own a tiger + drones and a zoo of tigers there after :wgrin:

MSP

I think most of it is mindblock for me… I don’t think MSP vs Sent/Strider/Doom should be as bad as it is for me nowadays.

Psylocke and Commando, but mostly Psylocke. Unlike most AA, Psylocke is more likely to hit Doom since her AA doesn’t arc forward like others.

Basic Strider/Doom is activating Ouro and calling Doom I guess.

IMO the key to winning with s/d is to be effective, no doubt about it. As Storm and Magneto make the most of not only their openings, but even just being in the opponent’s general vicinity, Strider has the same goal, albeit different options. Gain the momentum and don’t let it go - often times takes some creativity, especially against better players.

It’s however you play it, really.

Of course, as long as you can go through the motions heh.

Just change it up.

Not really sure what you mean. Though while I’m playing, I look at it like Magneto players do - if they land a hit, they win; if I land a hit with Ouro on, I win.

not sure what this question is asking

No, it’s not. To be totally honest, most Sent/Strider/Doom players that I’ve seen can’t play Sentinel at a top level to begin with, whether it be Sent/Doom, Sent/Commando, Sent/whoever. Of course that includes me as well, but as of late I’m really trying to step it up. (;_ _)

IMO it’s not too much to ask. The day I tell myself that it’s too hard to be consistent with Strider is the day I stop playing Marvel. If you can get to a point where you can consciously (sp?) look at your own matches (and others as well) as person vs person rather than this team vs that team, then you’ll be on the right track I think. Sounds dumb/corny but whatever heh.

Clockw***0***rk

Clockw0rk, are u going to evo this year?

yeah… i’ve been out of it for a long time but i’m really gonna try to get back in marvel this year. how about you?

Clockw***0***rk

Sounds great!I Just want to see the master back in action. lol
Unfortunately, I suck in marvel 2(I usually play 1), so I won’t be going any time soon.

since the topic was bought up, this year is finally the year I’m going to EVO guarantee. I steped my game up playing up here with the finest on the east coast (I’ll put up matches when I get the chance) So I’m hoping I can check out all you Strider players that are going there this year. Great to see you back as well clock. Any Striders comming to ECC this year? I remember we had a couple last year.

<------- SD player. A tip for you strider/doom players - if you like to do bombs into oro super watch out for cable/ sentinel duo. Cable can call sentinel and ahvb low enough that the bomb will just hit sentinel leaving cable free to kill off you and your assist.
