Need Feedback on Lagless LCD TVs!

All Evo attendees,

Many of the games on the Evo roster are HD games that look much better on a widescreen HDTV. We are considering investing in a set of LCD TVs to run tournament matches at Evo 2009. Of course, a pre-requisite is that we must use TVs with no display lag. Please provide your feedback to help us determine the right make and model of TV to buy. Our considerations:
[]Lagless! No display lag whatsoever
[
]Must be wide screen
[]Must support HDMI input
[
]Must support at least 720p resolution
MLG currently uses a 22inch LCD with VGA hook up. I have not personally tested it but MLG claims there is no lag when used with VGA cables.

Sharp AQUOS LC-GP3

Hi,

Being one of those rare gamers with a decent job, I recently did a couple of weeks research and purchased a sharp 32" aquos lc-gp3 that has a specialized mode for gaming called “vyper drive.” I use it at home with the ps3 and I have no detectible lag whatsoever on sf4.

size: 32" ; full 1080p ; hdmi input ; dvi input ; vga input ; lag-free gaming mode for hdmi/dvi/vga.

The review is a bit old, as you can get them now for about $700 if you look around. Unlike most 32" lcds, this one is full 1080p too.

This is the TV I have http://www.amazon.com/Toshiba-REGZA-42HL67-42-Inch-720p/dp/B000MY39HK lagless out of the box, didn’t have to mess with the game mode settings or anything. Not sure what size you guys are looking for though.

i gotta agree with x0n. sharp aquos line, especially what hes referring to, which is being marketed for gamers, is a really solid choice. Like he said, the viper drive engine, from what i experienced, works well. It’s used in the game mode setting to wipe the post processing lag clean away.

Other than sharp, usually low end brand tv’s tend to do well with games since they usually dont offer any fancy post processing to doll up the image. Olevia in particular usually has perfect tv’s for games, and are really cheap. Hell, the olevia I have now is a 720p native, and it has 0ms lag at every resolution thrown at it, except for 480i, which is 1/2 frame of lag(around 8ms).

are these tv’s gonna get used for the old games as well? if so, the only game you would have a potential issue with is 3s since it only does 480i. since you have to worry about upscaling and post processing. ggxx supports 480p. and marvel, if still using dc, works wonders via vga cable. Of course, thats all dependant on if you use a tv model that doesnt lag on upscaling.

I’m using viewsonic vx2835wm, and from the GH2 lag tests pretty much lagless on hdmi, component, vga and s-video settings, but some lag on composite input (as well as ghosting on composite as well).
also supports 480i-1080p

I’ve heard good things about this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824236051. It’s also under 200 bones and it meets the EVO criteria.

Looks like a potential winner, but it’s a bit pricey. We need at least 16 of these puppies. Does Sharp make a smaller version (maybe 26")?

EDIT: Looks like the answer is no. Well, the Sharp is our high end option at least.

There’s a Samsung model that works with 0 lag 20 inch model…can’t remember the brand, though

i’ve been using a sharp LC 19SK24U W without any discernable lag and has been used in almost all soCal guilty gear tourneys with no complaints. around $300, 19", up to 1080i resolution. does component, hdmi, vga, composite, svideo.

I don’t have any specific numbers for lag, but if you guys can post a way to test, i’ll try to do it.

use guiter hero lag calibration tests.

EDIT: Ill see if i can find time this weekend to test some cheap models at work. whats the max and minimum size you looking for?

nothing sold as a TV should be used. if you give me a size range i can help you out. there are some nice viewsonic TVs over at newegg that are lagless(like half a frame…) and im sure if you buy a bunch from them they will give you a discount or free shipping or something along those lines.

doesn’t rock band 2 have a better calibration test? the GH test has to get user input but the rock band 2 calibration test is all automated and has no user error.

yeah thats true. but who has RB2 lying around?

i don’t know, just suggesting it because it is the most precise way. see lots of threads on cheapassgamer on cheap deals on the game. Guitar Hero’s calibration mode is good, I’ve used it before but after the whole PS2 and ST debacle I don’t know if it’d be wise to use something that has human error involved.

There is actually an HDTV lag thread in the Tech Talk forums of SRK:

edit: link from that thread- http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1110472

Also, you probably want to do some lag testing. Run a dual monitor setup with one line to an old CRT monitor, and one to the hdtv, and run a stopwatch program, taking photos showing both screens at the same time, to measure the difference in milliseconds. I’m sure there’s instructions somewhere in the SRK thread. I might notice lag that someone else might not, and vice versa.

i just did a lag test with gh3 then a duel monitor test. the difference was 6ms. its close enough to get a base on a TV. but on gh3 i did the test a shitload of times and averaged the results.

The problem with the test is that the HDTV would be run via HDMI, and typical CRTs will be composite or maybe component. Is there a way without scaling to output a HD and SD signal at the same time?

IIRC the xbox360 can output on two different cables at the same time.

how? i dont think i can fit my HDMI and my composite in at the same time… and it would cant output 2 different types of signals so wtf…
