due to a death in the family (my great aunt passed) i WILL NOT be at the remaining TTT2 sessions this week. tonights session is in Raleigh at Guerilla S’ place and tomorrow is in Cary at LingMassacre’s. all you guys interested in the game should not miss either of these. they have different hosts but the people attending will be the same.
I’m sorry to hear that, DeMo. Please accept my condolences.
Well if anyone plays on XBL my GT is xHuckNasty
Not directed at you Jon, but when I read this it struck something in my head. I think (some) people are afraid of losing which they then decide or find an excuse not to play. Tournament wise yes, you would want to practice and get better before entering. Free casuals that you can use to learn the game shouldn’t scare anyone away. I don’t have much time to practice, but I have been going out to sessions the past couple of weeks and improved a lot. I don’t own a copy of Persona, but from what I’ve learned the few sessions I’ve attended from MLG on I’ve seen the improvement.
Plus with Tekken you can use the opportunity to get movement down and not worry so much about combos just yet. Find a solid punish, a decent easy combo, and practice movement. These little things will help you out a lot later as you improve.
Also as far as the Raleigh/Cary area goes there is NO ONE not willing to help you out. Even if you’ve never played. So you don’t have to worry about someone being a dick and just knocking you against the head since you’re new to the game. They will take a second and help you through if you ask. A community can only grow successfully as its players continue to improve and get better. Old and new.
Demo I’m so sorry for your lost. I pray that all of your family members will be able to make it through this.
Sorry about your aunt Demo, my prayers go to you and your family.
I wasn’t at the tourney so I couldn’t say for sure, but I don’t think that’s the best environment for picking up a new game casually. Most of the guys there probably want to focus on the games they’re entering. Gatherings/sessions at someone’s place probably work better.
True, but this week not including WNB there are a total of 4 sessions (Demo’s, two at Bryan’s, and Justin’s). Not counting people who have other obligations to attend to I’m sure some think that it would be too intimidating to go out to a session and get stomped. Its never like that and people will help you out if you ask. I feel like I’m learning something every time I go out to a session even though I’m not on the same level as the other guys. Especially a lot more than if I was just sitting at home playing by myself.
I just don’t want people to think that even though they don’t own the game yet and are able to practice it constantly that they can’t improve. Its a learning process just like any other. You’ve gotta start small and work your way up.
Hey Shiki what’s a good KOF to play then? I’m new to KOF and think XIII is a good game, but I also want to listen to what makes it not as good as the previous ones. I have KOF 02/03 and KOF XI. Will any of those do? If so wanted to play them and study up so I could compare notes later.
I want to attend some of these events, the only problem is that most of the stuff around here is on 360 right?
I personally like to build up my fundamentals in terms of combos and whatnot before putting too much effort into casuals, but that’s just me. I get frustrated if I can’t execute what I want on command and I’m not capable of learning anything when I’m frustrated.
TheCape: Actually I think most folks around here are on PS3, it’s the WNB guys who play on 360 more.
98UM and 02UM are the best old-school KOFs- PS2/360 ports (360 online is beyond terrible though)
I think 98UM is the best one because of the roster and style, and you don’t really have death combos outside of some glitches. Only real complaint I have is they left the AG and unblockable glitches in (they’re dumb), and Krauser’s a bit OP in the PS2 version (not broken, but he got nerfed in a later revision and deservedly so)
02UM is good as well, but doesn’t have the same sense of style.
I don’t like not understanding a game and just jumping in a pressing buttons, I really don’t learn that way. I need to get in the lab and dissect the game before I go out and try to play. I usually want to have a gameplan, know my general tools, combos, etc etc to where I don’t have to think about it TOO much so I can focus on the actual match and flow of the game and really get down to the learning.
Different strokes for different folks. Whenever I stop being a loser, I’ll get Tekken immediately, but for now it’s broke ass loser status so… meh.
The only thing you learn when you’re playing a game and mashing on the buttons is that you need to stop mashing on the buttons.
I guess my time will be split between TTTTTTT and Aquapazza for a bit, but I’d like to keep up with Persona and KOF. I’ll be at Charlotte or Fayetteville, not sure which yet.
No one said to mash. At least I didn’t. I said…
Tekken is largely based on movement. Working on your movement along with punishers will prepare you for those high damaging combos later on that people like so much. Even if your combo can do half life damage its useless if you can’t ever touch your opponent.
EDIT: There are so many players knowledgeable about Tekken in this state that they can just tell you what a good punish and easy combo are for whatever character you’re playing with/against. People will help you out if you ask, so there’s no need to be guessing.
Because clearly only trying to learn games at gatherings has made you one of the best players in the state, amirite?
Good tekken tag 2 session 8 with hate, exodus 777, haden, and josh.
facepalm Are you serious or trolling now? I’m not saying to ONLY learn at gatherings. You can still come out, learn, and have fun. You don’t have to feel like everybody is too good and you can’t show your face out. There’s no need to feel intimidated as if everyone will bash you for being the “new” guy, which will not be the case.
But yeah that kinda jerk off attitude is what I believe some people think they will receive if they try Tekken. That people will be complete jerks to them and withhold information while they bash them if they don’t hold some type of “status.”
And I before any fighting games personally practice boxing which I put before ANY fighting game. Sorry practicing and trying to attend boxing events doesn’t fit in with practicing fighting games as well. But I do enjoy playing matches and hanging out with people. I try to get in as much as I can, even if it isn’t much.
In other news, ReSe is this weekend. Who is going and for what?
I know you have good intentions, but I know what I want out of learning in games and I know I need a solid foundation of understanding before I go somewhere and start having people tell me “this move is good, do this”. I’m not worried about people being jerks, I’ve been in the FGC for like 10 years now lol. I’m worried about wasting my time.
Training mode > test findings at gathering > repeat until you have a solid game > get reflexes and matchup knowledge is pretty much the way to go IMO.
I’m assuming you mean the PS2 port of KOF 02/03 (which I have), which has an absolutely awful port of 02 and 03 just isn’t a very good game, period.
I love me some XI, I put it ahead of any version of KOF13 but the game has serious balance flaws (which nowadays would’ve been fixed in a 3-month patch) so I can understand why a lot of old-school KOF heads don’t like it.
98UM/2002UM are your best bets as they’re both available on XBox Live for cheap (online is horrible though), but original 98/2002 have tons of worldwide competition on GGPO.
Online Tekken…is still not very good.
