NC Thread LXVII (67) - RIP MaximumBurst

Just in case anyone wants to play tomorrow I plan on playing some UMvC3 Tuesday night. Just hit me up if you’re interested, gotta test out some teams I’ve been working on.

Dammit Jibbo, I respect your choices but stop playing bad characters, at the very least in finals.
No way would you have lost to a braindead scrub like MagManiac with 2 good characters.

You’re comparing the FGC to team sports leagues, that have seasons that culminate in a big tournament. That’s not what this is. This is more equatable to a sport like golf, with nothing but tournaments. You know who gets recognized in golf?

The winner.

This isn’t a league. There isn’t a regular season. It’s a bunch of tournaments, with double elimination brackets that are built to determine who the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place players are. If you aren’t in one of these spots, and you don’t take out a big name on the way to your placing, then you don’t have much to be proud of, and you should want more for yourself. The best players get more for themselves, and they get recognized. That’s the difference between them and everyone else.

Yeah I definitely feel you on bringing in the new people and spectators because a lot of time those spectators become competitors after they get infected by the hype and get more of an interest / understanding of the game. That’s one reason I do like the esports model, especially since they can use sponsor money to get a bigger payout to more players and not just the top guys. Hell, I was 1 round away from getting into the $1000+ territory for MK at MLG, that woulda been nice. I might not have been happy with 7th or whatever but I definitely would have been happy with that crisp stack of bills in my pocket lol

And it also does help to make the rest of the tournament a bit more interesting. For instance in KoF, it can pretty much be assumed that BALA is just going to win any and every tournament he goes to, so there’s not much hype for number one, but it would add a lot more for the players going in for those other top spots if there were more reward for doing overall pretty well.

But like I said, FGC tournaments are usually smaller and independently ran without a lot of corporate backing, so most of the prize pool comes from the players unfortunately, so that limits payouts.

Because Sagat and Jin are so bad, amirite?

DP: What happened to your Julia? I thought she was your baby.

Played Julia for Hugo. Don’t like Hugo in this game.

Shiki: My team is bad?..

Well, the reasoning behind the small payouts and lack of sponsorship is another story really, but they all tie in together though. I would say the common theme between both (less competitors and less sponsorships) has to due with the unwillingness to evolve into something more accessible. I feel a lot of that accessibility falls on those community leaders who are organizing the tournaments and whatnot. It’s not to say what’s going on now is bad, because it’s not. The scene today is very robust and great. But, I think in order to get bigger, there will need to be a change to make it more accessible and maybe even something like a league or even various types of leagues based on region to skill level even.

It would be cool to see more competitors from all over and even more sponsorship because of that increase of competitors. Maybe the movements into the MLG will help with the overall fighting genre in making that happen more often than not. But, like UltraDavid pointed out before, it’s not easy earning that trust in the FGC just by showing up. Even as a sponsor with money, you have to prove yourself to the community in order to do business (also another point on why accessibility needs to increase).

I should actually maybe write something up and submit it for publication just to see the feedback. I haven’t really seen to many publications come up lately outside of arguing the whole FGC versus eSports discussion. Would be interesting to debate.

And no Frank, no one is trying to compare anything here or trying to ignore what the FGC is today. I think everyone here knows what the FGC is currently. There is no need to keep repeating it like a broken record. I was just stating a mere opinion based on the original comment on what the problem is now. Regardless if you choose to accept it or not is on you. It’s only opinion coming from me, someone who is involved in both FGC and eSports.

Bobbie Fiasco, a freshman student of the NC scene, here lol.

In a nutshell, I am in the beaten and abused pot monster phase that Jon alluded to. Learning alot and becoming more and more hungry for better results and learning that certain results are no longer acceptable to me.

Both of the sides of the coin are correct. The scene has to grow and bring in new competitors and, at the same time, those competitors have to exhibit the drive to succeed beyond not going 0-2. Different people respond differently. Somebody can take the harsh Top 3 or bust and others can’t. I think it comes down to their current skill level. At my current skill level, I know what’s happening on the screen and grinding it out but I still have a LONG LONG LONG WAY TO GO to even compete with the Jon Slayton’s of the states or even graduate from ever going 0-2 again. However, I’m still going to push and learn but even now if I enter a tournament I am playing to win the entire thing. 3 mixups and you never know. I no longer care who I play because I am going to give it everything I got. I am intimidated by no one but I am humble.

I’m willing to take my lumps now for the chance to be great one day. You have to be welcoming but at the same time honest. You gotta have thick skin and an unwavering drive. I believe I have both.

Loving the scene because I’m meeting alot of people, who have been very helpful and entertaining lol. Had a bit of success (5th in Marvel at a WNB) and been compliment by some people for my drive and improvement. But going to Final Round and talking with people in the community really opened my eyes to how serious people take these games.

For a plant to grow, a little rain must fall. Those who are still around after the rain, have a shot.

No need to downplay the accomplishments of those who placed high but not Top 3 but, at the same time, those of us not on that elite level or mindset we have to realize that they have a whole different set of standards that correspond with the evolution of their talent.

A toddler is happy to get the ball in the kiddy hoop.
A high school freshman just wants to make Varsity one day.
A college player wants to win the National Championship.
An NBA player may just want to make the playoffs.
Kobe Bryant wants to win his 6th ring.

As you improve, so will your standards.

Just my 2 cents. Don’t mind me.

goes back to the Scrubum Sanctorum

As you improve… so do your standards. I like that.

I used to be a huge underachiever in games (I still am in real life) but eventually I got to points where I realized stuff was within my grasp with a little more effort, I could climb a little higher. And when you get to that higher point, then you see the next step up, and you just keep going. Getting good is a continual process and it’s not something you should ever be settled on. A lot of the time the people we look up to are also looking higher to something else… if you’re content then you’re not motivated.

We all look up to players like ChrisG but I bet ChrisG pushes himself so he can keep up with Wong and Combofiend and the like, and then, a whole mountain above that hill is the japanese players, who are all chasing their top players like Daigo, and even for Daigo, he’s not good enough for himself yet, he wants to win it all.

It’s discontent that keeps you moving. Don’t ever get happy with your placing because you can always do better.

I’ve been milling over the idea of a league in my head for a long time. I’m not sure how practical it is, it’d need a lot of interest drummed up but it could definitely go places. I think MLG is good to have there but we could have something much more accessible, consistent, and there for the every day person if competitive gaming wants to ever take off. You can’t really start a hobby off something that only comes to town once every few years I don’t think, but if we had local leagues with consistent tournaments (like WNB, only connected nationally)… just think!

It’s one of those things a lot of people say “why hasn’t this been done yet” but no one seems to be doing. Maybe it’s too big for the average person interested in competitive gaming to just up and make happen.

I’m #1!!!

Unknown took 2nd at civil war (don’t know if that counts for anything or not). I guess you didn’t see my matches either. I made it out in winners.

It’s not that complicated to start a small local league especially in this day and age. Someone just has to step up and do it in the long run. I was kind of hoping EVO would evolve into sort of a league as well the Cali scene doing the same with their big following, but no one has yet.

If it was me, I would totally start a local league of fighting game competitors with a local event. I would put up a website that all competitors in my local league where their progression in that league is tracked through player profiles and tournament statistics. I would also stream all the events and ensure the presentation of that league is at least decent where we could pull a national or international following of our own rockstars. From there, I may branch to online tournaments to include people who are not local who could compete for a grand final in a location around the world (ideally the USA like EVO).

If EVO can be as big as it is today in the fighting scene, you could do the same along with a league attached to that major event. You just have to step up and make it happen. And if you are serious about doing so, just poke me at WNB on Wednesday sometime and I can totally toss some ideas on how to make a league happen from website creation to common league software that’s used to track league progression etc.

Don’t let salty Jon downplay the fact that you did well at FR. You can’t blame them for putting F Champ and Kusoru in your pool Jon because who the fuck knew Kusoru was that good?

Anyway where and when are we doing games today?

update for DSC: REVIVAL**
MYSTERY TOURNAMENT!! $5 PER PERSON
2v2 team tournament will take place at some point during the tournament. it’s not quite a fighting game but essentially there will be some pushing and shoving taking place. HINT: it was a very competetive arcade game in its day!**

Comparing pools/brackets is completely useless. Unless you have people legitimately laying down for you then every bracket/pool is generally pretty tough. Anyways, I will be playing some UMvC3 today if anyone is interested.

I’m looking at hosting some games on Thursday, starting in the afternoon and ending…well, whenever. If you’re interested, hit me up.

NBA Jam?

Original, T.E., or the new On Fire Edition (which is awesome btw).

either way, im down.

Damn, thursday is shitty for me, I’m doin the Avengers marathon+midnight showing thing.

Anyone wanna play some KOF today?

ive already seen the Avengers, but whats this sir?

It’s the marathon where they show Hulk, Iron man 1,2, Thor, Cap, then Avengers at midnight for like 40 bucks. But now it sounds like we’re just gonna watch the marvel movies at my place then go to IMAX Avengers at midnight.

May 12th Rockem Sockem Regional’s!! Come out and get some MK with us. We are trying to revive the MK scene in NC and so far it looks like it’s working. We have several people from around the state and SC that are coming out to take that money. I too am getting back into the lab. Now that it’s done being patched let’s play again. I hear the online is better now, not great but better.
