NC Thread LXVII (67) - RIP MaximumBurst

Because I had something to say and the old thread was locked:

When it comes to HDTVs the best way to minimize lag is to remove technology from the panel; this why computer monitors are better for fighting games than televisions. The 2/3/5ms thing is virtually unimportant; that’s how fast the individual pixels update once they receive their new command (ex: change from red to blue), not to mention that even at 5ms you’re still at less than 1/3 of a frame, which is faster than the human eye can detect. Anything more than 60hz refresh rate on a console actually makes things worse: 120/240hz engage a smoothing effect that’s great for movies, sports, etc., but awful for games. For example say you’re running a fighting game in 120hz mode: the console will update on 2/120, 4/120, 6/120, etc. but the TV wants to update on 1/120, 2/120, 3/120, and on. It gets 1/120 by making a composite picture of 0/120 (starting image) and 2/120. Right now you’re wondering how the TV puts frame 1/120 up if it needs frame 2/120, and that’s the rub: it delays the image updating. And it gets worse because the composite image it creates to display on 1/120 can be distorted (my TV gets a Predator shimmer effect around large objects and certain texture patterns, and that’s on top of the rest of the post-processing mess). So all that beautiful tech built into your TV: turn it off. And don’t think that just because your TV has it that a Game Mode will fix your problems: my TV has a Game Mode, its still laggy.

General rule of thumb for buying HDTVs: Would you watch the Super Bowl or Blu-rays on it? Yes? Then it will be shit for fighting games. Great for everything else though. They make 40+ inch monitors but I don’t know how different they are from a regular HDTV since they have the same manufacturers.

Yeah, I’m glad Ryucross decided to explain it, cause as many times as I’ve spoken up in NC threads about it, Demo HAS to have been trolling ME, and ONLY me, specifically. Cause if I’ve said it once I’ve said it 100 times…

Response time has nothing to do with input delay. Post processing is the leading cause of input delay in consumer brand HDTVs (Sony, Samsung, etc. etc.) because it tries to clean up the image basically. Game Mode removes some, but not all, post processing. A select few HDTVs can run 1080p only VGA mode for 360 (sorry PS3ers) and remove all post processing. But you gotta be lucky on that one.

But Ron explained it with more technical detail.

all of them lag…just to what degree right. well i play Tekken and KoF on mine with no issues.

but as noted, i still have my HDCRT monster heavy fucker and another 32"

Yeah but some of them lag within a range that’s acceptable for majors. And some of them don’t, but still feel mostly ok to some people who own them and laggy to those who play lagless/CRT. And then most of them are terrible.

Matt Frank and Alex Roski are pretty good at telling if a TV lags or not.

GGs at Brent’s tonight. I swear it’s impossible to stay on top of this KoF scene for long. It’s a constant leap frog struggle to stay good. Perfect for making a strong scene. Looking forward to seeing how much we DESTROY other scenes in KoF.

I just threw out “2 ms” because I remembered that was the measurement of input delay, but I got some numbers mixed up. 16.6 is a frame, so less than 8 is about as good as it gets iirc. Anybody who’s ever looked at the SRK lag thread would know response time had nothing to do with it, it’s like bolded in the first several lines of the post or something lol.

It’s difficult finding accurate new (things you can actually buy -now-) information on these things, but it is out there if you look hard enough.

edit: yeah GGs Jon, Lu. Rare footage of Brent actually doing rushdown.

The funny thing about 2ms is that at that point its faster than a CRT (CRT is 4ms).

All that said as I was going to sleep last night I occurred to me that more recent TVs may use better tech to reduce the lag: if they’d just bypass all the processing instead of processing with no options then you theoretically could get an HDTV with no lag, I just doubt anyone would design that way.

That’s one of the things I want out of the next console set: true 1080p, not just 720p upscaled (which is the case with both PS3 and 360).

What’s up guys! Been taking a break from games for a bit. Getting kinda bored with everything out right now  Anyways I wanted to let everyone know that I am still working on finding a better venue and will have the details and location up soon. Right now it looks like we will be back at the club this month cause of the space and the cost is a little better than the hotel. I know it’s not the best venue but I worked with the owner to get 99% of the things fixed for next months tourney. Hopefully we will be in a different place as I am just waiting on a couple people to get back to me about a couple spots.

Here are the links for the events!! I also have a prereg up that if you guys could fill it out for me so I can get an idea of how many people I have it would help in knowing what I can afford on the venue. You do not have to pay for anything on the prereg it’s just info right now. That will be an option later though for those of you that want to do that.

Thanks again guy!!

GG’s to those who showed up on Sat for the VF5 Final Showdown Training. I am going to start it up again in about a hour or so, if you plan on coming please send me a PM or call my cell.

OMG NC is representing at Civil War!!!

jibs got 3rd in cross. RyRy won KOF!?!?!?

Not really. West did well, so did DP. But…

NONE OF OUR KOF PLAYERS WENT. WTF. I have finals, but wtf was there a major 4 hours away from us that nobody fucking went to?

Dont forget Jayson got 5th in SFxTK. Also K-Brad took 4th in AE. Im also disappointed that none of the NC crew went for KoF, the entire time i was watching i had people there telling me how well we would have done. its sad. unfortunately until my little one gets here im grounded as far as major travel. so its all practice mode and hoping people will come see me (HINT HINT)

!!! Early Congrats man. Yea. ppl should be able to come out and play games with ya. This includes me.

Demo’s pregnant!? How far along are you, and who’s the lucky father?

I really wanted to go to Civil War but it turns out my unemployment MIGHT be getting cut off, not entirely sure but my payment was randomly halved this week, tried to get up with the offices but they didn’t call me back before friday… decided to do the smart thing and NOT take the financial risk of going to civil war for the weekend.

That was some incredibly bad timing, I would have loved to be up there.

Still, people need to stop getting hype for shit like top 8. Fuck that, got first or go home. You all failed NC!

On a serious note, do you guys want to start going to the VA monthlies? We need some better comp than what most of NC has to offer.

Wanted to go to Civil War, but had a familial obligation to fulfill. It happens, too bad but there’s next time, I guess.

Will definitely be up for some games this week, last week of classes for me.

And here, we have the single biggest problem with this state’s scene. Quit being happy with 9th-4th. Double elim brackets are only designed to give you the three best players, so if you aren’t top three then your placing doesn’t matter at all.
