NC Thread LIV: No name for this one

Oh so whenever he places low in brackets it’s because he got fucked on the pairings?

Wow. Don’t sleep on OJ guys. He’s definitely putting in work.

As far as Fayetteville casuals go, I’m down, even though I haven’t really been playing for the last few months. Getting bodied at the last Lucky’s and flat out embarassed at FR kind of took the wind out my sails. Although I’m still going to support the NC scene, I might chill on the competetive playing for a while, which probably means nothing to you unless you main Zangief.

Jon’s pretty much right. Well…almost, since the training mode people are often the ones most deficient in fundamentals. I think I lose just as often if not more when I run into someone who’s defense is stronger than mine.

Roski is definitely consistent and very well-rounded. He’d be where the cursor would default to if we were a fighting game.

Yo Matt I learned some Combos lets play this week

Yeah but the really specific cheesy BS gimmick trickery always works on you lol. They might have worse fundamentals but it doesn’t matter if they land their dumb setup repeatedly and keep you out of situations where you can strong hand them with jesus pokes and holy block.

I wanna play Marvel.

imo killing 3 chars with level 3 x-factor is as easy as landing an ultra 1 with rufus. i dont see why ANYONE would even support the idea of x-factor.

It’s Wednesday. Any plans formulating for the weekend?

Do we know if RuAGamer is a good venue? If not we’re gonna need to find someone hosting or figure out if we’re all gonna just chill at home.

I’ve found that the study lounges on the 4th floors of the buildings in Wolf Village are almost always empty on the weekends. Maybe we could try in one of those? Never been to RUaGamer, though if it’s anything like the DLC was in Greensboro it may be alright.

I’m pretty sure we’d get a noise complaint being on the 4th floor…

Guess I got left out because its hard to travel with a toddler and a newborn, oh well. Jon, I’m down for next weekend sorta. Final Four is Saturday night and Wrestlemania is the following night, not gonna miss either of those more than likely especially not the latter. If thats when you’re doing it I’ll do my try to come out there, if its Friday night I’m definitely down though.

Probably right but it’s a bit cramp with all those people in one apartment.

I miss Final Round and get booted out of the “good at GG” club? I am sad.

lol that’s not exactly what I said.

To go into detail, I feel like the game’s system causes a lot of otherwise individually varied characters to play similarly. The homing system provides a lot of freedom of movement but also seems to homogenize how characters interact with each other, and the Arcana system seems to really dominate a character’s playstyle at times. I know this isn’t 100% accurate and I don’t have a lot of knowledge about the game, but from watching at least, my feelings on the game went from “wow, this game looks really exciting”, to “wow, all these characters are doing the same thing”.

I could try to make it out to stuff at fayetteville. Much closer to where I live. I’ll definitely be able to do it come summer time when I get my license.

I remember when you mentioned this to me one time at one of the gatherings… I can agree to an extent, seeing that all the Arcanas will always give you the same E attacks no matter who you pick (ex : Ice 236E with Heart is the same as Ice 236E with Lilica).

But besides that, I think the movesets really effect/diversify how the arcanas are used. For example, a player won’t have much success using Plant Saki while have the same mentality as a Plant Scharl. And a Tyr Petra is always going to be more effective at using EF’sthan a Tyr Heart, because Heart doesn’t have the moveset to keep opponents away… List goes on with Gier crossovers with Akane / Clarice teleports and other character specific traits. A good example is our own players… Some of us use the same Arcana (me and Alice Chan both use Tyr Arcana), but our play styles are so different despite using that exact same arcana.

Yeah, like I said, it’s probably more due to my lack of understanding of the game. At the same time, certain Arcanas have an extremely powerful influence on how you play, to the point where it feels more like you’re playing the Arcana than the character. Certain characters definitely benefit more from playing certain Arcanas, but some Arcanas have stuff that’s just generically good for any character. It sort of downplays a lot of the implied variety of the game. I remember Matt talking about how balanced the game is and I have to wonder if it’s because of how homogenized the game feels.

But yeah, I don’t really know a whole lot about the game in general. There is just something very “meh” about it, and I’m not terribly motivated to give it a whole lot of attention.

Not insulting Arcana, and I definitely haven’t played enough of it, but it does seem a little more homogenized this time around.

A lot of what I played and saw at Final Round seems to indicate the game is lot more training mode combo exhibition than I thought it was. I’m basically limited to my experiences with AHF, but while that game was also overly combo friendly, at least it had quite a few characters with unique touches and playstyles like Maori, Kira, Fiona, etc. whereas in AH3 everyone just picks the Arcana that allows them to do the longest combo possible.

Again not hating on the game, and I’m still going to play it, but I don’t think I’m going to enjoy the game as much as AHF.

I’m not sure how much you played AHF, but I can assure you that AHF is one of the last games I could consider to be combo friendly. Try doing some of the 60%+ combos in this game and see if you still think the game is combo friendly.

Where did you get this idea? There are plently of arcana that sacrifice damage for oki / pressure… such as plant seed unblockable setups, and time arcana ambiguous crossovers. Some of which are proven to be more effective than doing single long damaging combos.

I concur with Shiki in that none of this is meant to insult AH3. It still seems like a good game at its core and I’m glad people are enjoying it. I’m just highly disinterested in it. Sam said he wanted to show me some cool stuff, so maybe that will get me interested in the game again.
