NC Thread LIV: No name for this one

I main dark sub in the akane arcana.

In a way, the arcana does dictate how your character is played to some degree. Some are gonna focus on oki / zoning, etc etc more than others but from watching it, the game does seem like a lot of flying around in homing mode into combos. I’m sure it’s good though… just need to man up and learn it. Can’t get hype to for some reason though.

You’re talking to an old man here. I consider anything above >5 hits a long combo. Most rounds in the game end in 2.5 combos or less. I know nowadays you kids have your Marvel and seem think any combo that doesn’t kill someone off a random hit isn’t that long, but I still remember a time when super cancels were an enormous deal.
I also seem to remember to be hit by quite a few 3 hour long combos back in the day in AHF.

Excuse me while I go get some dinner while I’m being combo’d.

Anyway, I’ll be in Raleigh again this weekend if anyone wants to play anything.

lol AHF had some crazy long combos. xD I thought you meant they were easy to do when you said combo friendly (as in anyone could pick up the game and do high damage combos). In that case I agree with you on AHF. But not AH3 though, untechable time has been reduced a lot.

I’m gonna be at NC State on Saturday to visit a friend, is anything happening games wise? Would love to get more games in like we did last weekend.

To be fair, this is quite common with other fighters as well- that a system can really homogenize characters.

Oftentimes something which is good for balance, is bad for variety and vice versa. It takes a really well-designed game to have good balance and good playstyle variety.

Explain on this. This sounds like something I’d want to use.

I really don’t see it as frequently as you’re implying. I know this is your mantra when it comes to new-school games, but I have to disagree with you here.

There are characters in AH3 that use Arcana as more of a supplement than anything, since they’re mostly fine on their own, and those characters are the ones I’ve seen/used the most (Petra/Weiss/Fiona/Akane). I still see it as something you give your character to either capitalize on a strength or cover a weakness, rather than “I’m playing Love”.

Love and Flower come to mind as two of the most popular Arcana choices, and I wouldn’t say either of them are for long combos or dictate how you play the game. Love helps your oki and neutral game, has pretty good passive effects and sometimes lets you combo off of things you otherwise couldn’t with laser super. Flower gives you incredible recharge time on Arcana gauge, semi-reversal, negates counterhits, a big slow projectile that you can move and flowers to plant. When’s someone’s playing Flower though, they’re not just…playing Flower. I don’t know what that would look like, planting shit over and over and throwing out enormous startup projectiles?

Between the characters we all play, I don’t see homogenization. I guess if two people played Plant, both of their characters might be able to do something like BC vine BC vine etc, they might set up oki the same way with Dark and things like that…but he options of the characters themselves vary enough as it is for them to be completely different. Even within Arcanas themselves you can pick them for different reasons, like how I’ll use Tyr with Petra just to EF as much as possible to stack stat increases and not use the specials or supers at all while 7th uses Tyr basically just for the sword dash special. Further still, many people use it just to get an advantage over the largest characters with the lightning wall.

About long combos and execution and all that, I can do BC > special move against Brandino with Petra and it does about the same damage as his 70-hit combo. Seriously, SERIOUSLY. Fiona also still does what she always did. You want <5 hit combos? She can kill people in less than 5 hits period lol

Anyway, I can’t blame anyone for not being hype about the game, it’s probably not for everyone (and it’s a 5 year old PS2 game etc), but I’d have to stand behind there being variety. Several of you guys just want the most enjoyment out of Marvel possible with nothing else hopefully looking good enough to distract you and that’s fine  you can enjoy your game without having to justify not playing another. I’d say some of us try to play too many games, and to truly be competitive some things may need to be weeded out if you’re a player that doesn’t transition well.

Speaking of, I’m still getting my stuff together in that game, training with different teams. I might settle with Team Lightning, which seems appropriate.

I wish this was nominated for an article. You pretty much said how I feel but yea definitely it’s not a game for everyone. I’m actually getting a PS3 today so i’m gonna have to get some PSNs for those who are getting AH3. I’m very curious if the english AH3 will work with the Japanese version.

You would make CGS proud. Or angry because you still killed them in 2 combos even with their rule.

I pretty much agree with Brent. There really are many ways to incorporate your own play style with an arcana (as he explained in his examples). Couldn’t have said it any better.

Seeds - With plant Arcana you can plant seeds into the ground which will attack the opponent if they step over the area that the seed is planted. Since the plant is a “low”, you can set up unblockables with your planted seeds by using overheads/jump attacks at the same time of the seed activating.
Gier - To give a simple explanation, Dark arcana gives you a shadow that is capable of attacking whenever you release the E button. So some characters with teleports can set up some nasty crossovers into combos by teleporting and releasing E at the same time.

Ahh so is that why everyone says Akane with Dark is so good? I was wondering why Dark would be better than Plant or Love for her.

The concept of Arcanas being supplements to the characters has been around since AH1 and hasn’t really changed. The way you apply the theory has changed due to the overall system changes, but for the most it’s still AH at it’s core. I would’ve expected people who were to exposed to AH prior to AH3 to have an understanding on that already. I mean, it has always been main selling point of the series…

To be fair Brent, I play Punishment. I lose about 2K base life by default and I take 2X damage while in EF. That’s more so a drawback to my Arcana as opposed Weiss herself…her defense is average.

With characters like Akane, there are good Arcanas and okay ones. Whether you want to use Plant or Dark is all dependent on what you want to do with the character; neither is “better” than the other. As long as you’re using an arcana fit for your character, you’re good to go. It’s not like Catherine where you better fucking use wind, or Kira where your choices are Metal/Evil/Thunder/Magnet pretty much exclusively. I got bodied by a Magnet Akane in winners at FR. She’s good by herself, the Arcana choice just lets you supplement what she already has.

:wonder: Kevin, I never see you on PSN. We should get some matches in, I use She-Hulk, X-23 & Jill/Morrigan for my main and goof around with, Arthur, Wesker, Zero, Captain America. Jill is awesome… dood.

I’m confused. There was an asian guy wearing a black shirt that “MURDER FACE” at Final Round that I originally believed to be Tokido. Matt told me that the guy Jon was playing in Marvel was Tokido, which was another asian dude in like a dark brownish jacket. Not the one Tokido also wore later with the stripe, just a plain ass darker brown jacket.

Does anyone know what Tokido actually looks like? Cause I just checked the FR Grand Finals footage on Youtube and it says Tokido and it’s that guy who was in the Murder Face shirt. Not the other random asian dude that I saw Jon play in Marvel who people said was Tokido. I’m confused as shit, cause they didn’t look anything like each other and I’m assuming it’s just NC being racist. I saw the guy in the Murder Face shirt speaking really good english. But the guy in the dark brown jacket spoke barely any, and Jon said “Tokido” didn’t really speak to him much and just kinda nodded. Unless Jon happened to play some other random asian guy in a brown jacket when I was watching that someone mistook for Tokido. Cause Tokido was on stage when Jon was playing this other dude.

Also, sidenote, I wouldn’t put me on the list of Marvel players to look out for, Jon. I believed it early on, probably because I would’ve liked to. But that’s definitely not the case now that the game has had more time to develop.

I… I don’t know, he looked like Tokido to me. He was playing Tokido’s team. He was godlike, and he made the murderface when i killed his Akuma. So WHO THE FUCK WAS I PLAYING?!?

So god damn confused.

ITT: All asians look the same

I should buy myself a murderface shirt.

Here’s Tokido. He had a haircut at Final Round that I haven’t seen him wear before.

Tokido - Google Search

Guy 1: Hey have you played Arcana Heart 3? It’s really fun.

Guy 2: I dunno man. Arcana Heart 3 seems pretty homogenized this time around. They all play the same. Every time I see it, the players seem to pick a certain arcana for a character to do the longest combos possible. Not my type of game.

Guy 1: Well, then you wanna play Marvel?

Guy 2: Yo Word? You brought Marvel? Let’s see if my team of X-23/Wesker/Jill will be varied enough to beat you.
