I’ve always been a fan of sentinel. I was interested in playing him until I learned: how popular he was, and how ridiculously good he was with little effort (although all the anti-sentinel strats are very scary).
I still might give him a shot. I just like that character. I haven’t touched him since I got the game though.
well it’s not like they changed any of his moves or anything, so I’m going to imagine that if you wiped those three sents that easily it would have happened regardless. I mean the health nerf is what? One less combo he can eat? I’m having a really hard time believing that makes him unplayable because I’ve been reading a lot of a bitching and not one time did anybody seem to think it was his health (as opposed to hyper armour or whatever) that beat them.
So the truth of the issue is that Sentinel is actually a weak character and the only reason tons of people used him was because his health was really high? None of his offense was really worthwhile or doable anymore now that his health is low? Hey all these grievances might be true, I don’t know. I’ve been playing Arcana like all the kool kids.
The comments on the front page topic are pure gold.
I can appreciate CapCom trying to fix stuff, and I think many are probably correct in supposing that these changes were on the way very near to game release if not maybe slightly afterwards. So I don’t think it’s necessarily in response to anything anybody has said here on SRK or elsewhere.
Patchability can work for good or bad, but from a competitive and consistency standpoint I think this is bad juju, or at best a very slippery slope. Especially in the no-announce way they did it. They may very well kill this game (for the hardcore, at least) in trying to fix it. And the truly casual will move on in a few months at most anyway.
Sad times for the serious MvC3 player - not because of what was done, but the precedent it sets. Hope this mentality doesn’t go on to ruin this game and others.
“Get scrub hype!” (<~~ this is just a random quote from the main page thread; not a jab at the game or anybody who plays it. So many salty tears; seriously funny thread! I saw where Jon posted…)
Dont be a dick. You know full well that a fair number of people playing Sentinel are (excuse me WERE) doing so because of how braindead he was discovered to be. This was good because it forced players to learn what they could and couldnt do in certain situations, mainly against that character. But it was also bad because like it or not the casual game was turning into blank, blank, Sentinel (a quip taken directly from your mouth).
Its a HEALTH nerf. While I agree its a tad overboard and should have been somewhere near the 1.1mil range, it doesnt change the character himself. The matchup is still the same. He just cant get hit or play brick wall like he used to.
I find it entertaining the contrast between reactions of Sentinel players and the rest of the community.
Did they nerf JUST his health? That seems a bit childish and a “surface” tweak instead of tweaking the actual character.
I can see 1.1 or 1.2 mil. In someways, I feel that stamina should be a character trait, which is why Chun-li usually has pixie stamina and Ryu has the “standard” stamina. W/ Sentinel, he’s Sentinel, make him have lots of stamina, lots of damage, but make him big and easy to hit! Wait… didn’t they do that to begin w/?
I feel the best tweak would have been to make it harder for him to hit you w/ the big damage he has.
I think what most people are missing about why it’ll be nearly impossible to play Sentinel competitively now is his health is extremely important to him. Like Matt said before he’s the easiest character to mix up, he’s not really fast even with his flight mode, and almost all his normals and or specials have lag after or slow start up. He’s just a wasted character in a line basically now. The most effective way I can legitimately see him being used is as the 2nd character for DHC purposes to kill off a character or 2 which there are plenty of more options in terms of better characters overall to use for that. The Lvl 3 XFC isn’t that great either since he’s still slow, doesn’t have a teleport that I know of, his hit box doesn’t shrink, and most importantly his health doesn’t magically repair itself to 1,300,000. So yea, he can still kill you if you run into his attacks but now nearly everyone can kill him from a simple mixup, a missed attack, unblockables(btw he’s the easiest one to do this on), or just about anything else.
Its just a terrible knee jerk reaction to a bunch of idiots complaining.
Lots of people just don’t buy that. The character is big, the character is slow, his moves are laggy, X factor doesn’t really help him. If he has so many problems, why are you playing him? I’d give these arguments a whole lot more thought if all the people saying he has so many issues weren’t Sent players themselves.
Reason being, it’s a whole lot easier to understand why someone would stress their characters weak points and downplay his strong points then it is to understand how a character who hasn’t had any of his moves changed is now shit tier because of a health nerf.
Prepatch Sent question: is the match over when you get hit with a 350k combo? If you’re playing Sent and someone hits you first do you just put down the stick?
What an interesting coincidence, that in my musings about Marvel 3 today, I was entertaining some team ideas that involved little to no Sentinel whatsoever. Stay psychic, me.
In other news, Lords of Shadow DLC content dropped today. GET.
Seemed like a lot of people took issue with the patch, but it’s hard to tell if it’s because of the principle of an arguably too-early patch or just salty Sent tears. Maybe some of both in a few cases.
Just a rough estimate off that one thread…*
60% - Don’t like the patch
20% - Don’t really care, don’t play him, maybe they went a lil’ overboard at 905k, don’t touch my Dorm
20% - Damn glad to see it! Maybe should have nerfed his damage, too
= virtually everyone has a wishlist of what/how things should have been patched
But back to the Sentinel thing. I see all this talk about Sentinel has this problem and that problem, so why touch him but NONE of the people saying it are pointing out the things that made him good to begin with that werent his health. I mean doesnt he STILL have one of highest possible damage outputs in the game? Does he still have hyper armor S and super armor B/cr.B? Does he still have amazing run away with his flight? Does he still have normals/supers that have hitboxes OFF his character and continue even when hit?
My point is that Sentinel can still dead you…just like before. And **while I agree **this “balance” patch wasnt needed and a bit of a knee jerk just like everyone says it is, theres not much we can do now other than just playing the game as we were before the patch.
Notice what I put in BOLD so therefore my post cant be chopped and screwed and turned into some remix of my original thought.
Some of the stuff in here is overreactions. Sent is unplayable even though he’s the exact same character as before! He has no merits at all except his health, now I might have to block instead of mashing 2B and 5S =(
I mean… really…
He still:
Has one of the best assists in the game.
Has the highest damage in the game bar none.
Has the easiest damage in the game bar none.
Has pretty damn safe super / hyper armor moves that lead to said damage.
Command command grab you into said damage.
Has awesome control over the air with his jumping attacks.
Has a full screen invincible super.
Has a relatively safe full screen projectile super he can combo off of.
Still has amazing DHC options.
He’s the exact. Same. Character. Watch match videos of Sent and note how many times he wins with more than 1/4 of his life left. I promise you it will be quite a few and hey, if that were post patch sentinel, they’d still have won. Imagine that!
Get off the god damn crutch and learn to play the game people.
That’s fine if it starts and ends there. I doubt this will be the case, though.
I think little-to-none of this is being done with the serious player in mind, anyway.
I think 1.1 mil would have been reasonable. Maybe a bit higher; no lower. You have one school of thought that says “no big deal, just means 1 less combo to kill” and another that says “now rendered unusable”. As with many things, the truth is probably somewhere in between. We shall see.
I should rephrase it then for you. My problem with this patch is that with Sentinel’s hit box is still large as hell which made him by default a pretty good match up for any pixie to jump on. It is just easier to get a hit on Sentinel period while his relatively slower attacks and lack of mobility make it harder for him to open up the faster characters or those with the ability to teleport around the screen. His high health along with his high damage helped him cancel out his defensive woes. I’m not saying that a health decrease isn’t a totally bad thing just not that big of a health decrease. It makes no sense to have the biggest character in the game taking more damage than Ryu, Morrigan, Shuma, MODOK, Taskmaster, Viewtiful Joe, etc… IMO if you are the biggest character in a fighting game you should by default be in the top 5 of stamina, thats been a golden rule of any competitive fighting game. Its simply ridiculous that they would decrease it by that much.
Yes, obviously they planned before the release of the game to fix bugs that weren’t discovered until after the release of the game.
As for Sentinel, it was obviously their plan to rape his health from the beginning, making it look for 5 weeks that he was going to be tops and then pull the rug out from all the Sent riders and swimming in the salty tears produced by it.
