NC Thread LIV: No name for this one

gs to rob, jon, and keith tonight…i have SO much to learn!

thanks for the tips, i just have to remember what they are and how/when to use them, no problem, right?

kittyciara, usually about 7.

random question to old school MK players. regarding the button layout on the new stick and the replacement panel from madcatz, why is it layed out like that? the button that goes with the thumb (low left button) used to be the “run” button in the arcade mk3, but from what i can tell mk9 doesn’t have a “run”, right? or did i miss something?

also, for the people that have played the demo, what layout are you using? not sure i like the standard. i used to like the layout with the low/high, but now it’s forward/back, i guess you could still make it work with the middle being block.

I’m with Jimmy. I’m just going to play the game for now.

If wanting to give a character a chance because of such a short amount of time is scrubby… that really seems a little backwards.

I remember when Brawl first came out, everyone was crying “BAN MARTH”. He seemed really good compared to everyone else, then suddenly everyone learned how to play the game and he was just ok. Marvel has always been a game with counter picking, hasn’t it? You have 3 slots on your team… find out who rapes phoenix and put them in if it’s really that much of an issue. Saying she negates zoning characters is like saying Dante and Dormammu negate zoning characters too. MOST of the characters in this game are versatile enough that they aren’t dictated to only one role.

Anyway, that’s my opinion.

“It just comes down to this: scrubs will always make excuses for sucking at games, and good players will find ways to optimize their practice time and level up more quickly. -Fubarduck”

someone should take up the challenge of proving how/why she’s banworthy. like what damdai did with akuma in HDR. the only stipulation that i would mention is that it shouldn’t be justin, because people won’t know if it’s just people losing to justin, or if it’s phoenix killing everyone.

well that’s going to be the case with any top player playing that character. The only way to really prove that is if some nobody who people can’t really notice as really good or players that aren’t thought of to be as good as top players beats top players continuously with Phoenix and everything they do to stop her fails. This is highly unlikely though…

I don’t think it’s necessary for one person to take up that mantle; there are legions of people already trying to get their DP thing going.

If it’s really that bad - it should be somewhat evident at EVO I would think.

I see what you did there.

BTW way too early to be talking ban. Any banlist should be decided after EVO, barring obvious freeze glitches like Zero’s.

HDR Akuma, SC4 Hilde each got more time then what Phoenix got, and Phoenix isn’t worse then those two.

Anybody interested in getting some games in Wednesday? Wouldn’t mind some practice before the Sweet 16 starts up Thursday night.

Edit: As for Tron’s assist I think I remember hearing something before where she’s not completely invincible, there’s just 2 spots where you can hit her, I think one of them was low and the other one might have been directly above her or behind her somewhere. Can’t remember for sure the exact spots I heard but that might explain why she’s not listed as an “invincible assist.”

And as for Pheonix/Dark Pheonix I’m not too worried about her yet. She definitely is a pain in the ass in the right hands but part of it is just playing your game against her IMO. The one thing that she has over just about any character I’ve seen in a game is that having her on a team dictates the way you play the match completely. I think its more of a matter of time of people playing against her enough to feel comfortable and confident against a pheonix team. To me its kinda like the first time people played against Spiral/Sent, Strider/Doom, MSP in MvC2. Its gonna wreck you for a while until you figure out a weakness or feel comfortable in executing a counter strategy against. To sum it up, I think its more a a general inexperience against the character thats the most daunting task right now.

Here’s my idea for handling Phoenix, off the top of my head

Kill off the other characters, then don’t kill Phoenix, if needbe, run like a chicken for 40-50 seconds like it’s SFIV. Use x-factor to bleed off another 10-20 ticks of the clock as necessary. What sort of damage can Phoenix do off a throw?

I don’t know if this is viable, and it’s really boring, but I think it would work. Has anyone tried this yet?

Sometimes the only way to win is not to play.

I’m not on some sort of crusade or some shit to get the bitch banned. I just think she takes away from the depth that this game could potentially have by making you snap her in, which is bad by itself. There’s a lot of good ways in theory to handle her, it’s just that those ways are pretty difficult to put into practice. When 1 of the few top players that does play her says something to the effect of “I want to play other characters because I feel like Phoenix is a crutch, which lets me win without playing well” (Clockwork, who said this after the tournament in which he eliminated Combofiend) it’s kind of alarming.

Yes, teleport characters give zoners a hard time, but this is the best teleport ever paired with a character that has tracking fireballs (and fast fucking normal fireballs), which causes free fucking mixups to anyone that isn’t in the air at the time. The issue is that we don’t have a really, really strong Phoenix player here yet, so nobody’s seen it in action which is why I’m playing her.

That has always bothered me. I’ve always felt that low stamina was a poor excuse for balancing a character.

I need a better Whoopi-Q avatar than Matt Frank.

Shoutouts to Shin Akuma.

Since people missed a large point of what I was trying to say earlier, I’ll explain; Phoenix giving zoners a hard time isn’t the problem at all; she’s gonna do that. My problem is that you can’t zone the rest of her team at all and hope to have a chance, because you can’t play a zoning style and simultaneously be in position to snap someone in. This forces you to either rush down with characters that aren’t meant to do it (vs. characters that do it much, much better), or drop the style entirely and play rushdown characters. She totally invalidates a style of play by being on the team.

Apparently Sent has 850k life now.

lol wut Brent?

Also Matt, what team doesn’t get any physical hits at all? If they are staying away from you in fear of getting snapped back, then you know… you’re shooting them and building meter and damage, while they are not. And who doesn’t get snap back opportunities? You play Deadpool / Storm / Sent… all 3 of them use their normals and lead into combos at some point in their standard gameplan.

No Brent is serious. There was a patch today to prepare for “Event Mode” on 3/25/11. That patch also seemed to lower Sentinel’s health to around 850-950k. Also, Spencer’s zip wire shit in that trag video (ABC Zip BC Zip BC Zip S) apparantly is gone as well. If you try to zip wire on the ground twice in a combo, the second one makes you airborne or something. The patch just happened apparantly this morning, I’m sure more shit will be found that was secretly changed.

If true, we’re back to 1997 Capcom balancing. Both because its over-reacting (minus 500k life on a bigman?!) and doesn’t touch the really dumb stuff (autoguard on launcher, double the XFC bonus the rest of the cast gets).

Damn, I was just messing with Spencer last night and found out what a beast he was. I wonder what got nerfed with Phoenix? Gotta get back and make sure my Zero is still in tact.

Also apparently X Factor got nerfed, I wonder how?

I agree… I just found this out my friend is saying 950k but nobody is exactly sure yet. I don’t really understand why capcom tends to touch the stuff that doesn’t really need to be changed, he could be a high health character no problem but that’s if they fix some of the stuff you mentioned.

He’s still going to be just as retarded, having less health isn’t gonna make him not kill you in one combo off a hyper armored move in X factor.

so i just want to hear peoples opinion on this…should x factor be in MVC3 at all? Im kinda split myself. One the one hand, LVL3 means one touch and you die, but without it you could get lamed out and chipped out all day.
