When Johnny Carson left the Tonight Show, he did not name a successor. Toward the end of his run, he would take several days/weeks/months off, and his guest host was Jay Leno. Letterman would follow at 12:35 on Late Night. Anyway, I guess Letterman expected to host Tonight after Carson ended his run, but when Carson left, NBC gave the show to Leno, who was basically hosting the show already. Afterward, Letterman left NBC.
Uh, Sep. Letterman was knocking on Carson Daly in that clip. Not Johnny Carson.
Oh. I don’t know because I don’t watch Letterman. 
Damn it would be great if late night TV was always as watchable as all the clips on that page… but it ain’t.
And he’s backstabbed twice in his late night career. What self-respecting person in showbiz without NBC up their ass would have anything good to say about Jay?

Carson expected Letterman to get the Tonight Show as well. He promised it to him. Johnny was ultimately the one who told Letterman to leave NBC and not to remain on the Late Show by following Leno.
I doubt Conan would go back to writing for the Simpsons. That’d be a huge step back for his career.
Ugh - personally I never liked Leno’s stuff. I was glad to see him give up the ship.
Letterman was a little better and the Leno folks jumped ship to watch him.
Conan’s always been hilarious and the Chuck Norris lever was AWESOME.
Fallon needs to find something else to do and give the Roots his show.
This situation is pissing me off; it’s NBC bending over backwards for Leno. He had his time, no more shows for him on NBC pls. His 10pm show failed, get the lineup back to normal and leave Conan be.
Well, he’s always said he wouldn’t mind since it’s one of his favourite gigs in his career, that and he’s great friends with all the writing staff and production team.
So I’m hearing that the Jay Leno Show’s ratings are pretty consistent with that of Leno’s Tonight Show (5-5.5 million) and that Conan’s Tonight Show ratings are about consist with that of Conan’s Late Night (2-2.5 million). This is probably why NBC is so much more enamored with Leno than it is with Conan.

Anyway, the latest rumor is that Leno is looking to leave NBC, too, since he’s unhappy with the screwjob they’re giving Conan.

They just need to give Conan the entire late night slot and let him have complete creative control.
hooorrrible. but id love to see the roots get paid. haha jimmy fallon is running out of guests…the other night it was llike boston celeb night. they got lenny(comedian) and big papi.
I think if Conan does decide to walk that one of their last episodes just needs to be one big Conando episode.
Because lets face it, Conando has been his best gimmick since the Walker Texas Ranger Lever.
