NBC Shakeup -- Jay Leno Comes Out on Top

I wonder how many people actually watch the show. I’ve liked Conan for a long time, but nestling into my couch at 1135 every weeknight to watch network TV is something I rarely do, and I suspect its the same situation for many people my age, which happens to be an age group Conan appeals to. For all the people joining facebook groups, posting on forums, and every other empty gesture on the internet, how many people are actually tuning in? Maybe people should blame themselves for not keeping him on the air instead of NBC, Leno, or some other ghost.

Watching him on Hulu.:shake:

Since it’s the younger generation, expect a bunch of people to download the show or Hulu(is it there? it doesn’t work for us outsiders) it to watch whenever.
I also think Conan is 100 times more popular than Leno outside of America, a lot of support may come from there.
If there was some sort of international channel, hypothetically, I think Conan would slay Leno. I have no facts to back this up though of course.

We used to have Conan on here in Sweden with about a week of lagging behind US airings(for subbing and stuff), but since he switched to Tonight Show I don’t think any network has picked it up (one channel though is airing the trainwreck that is Lenos new show), so I have to make do with other methods to see Conan myself these days. :shake:

Oh I’m well aware lots of people probably just download the show. I don’t know how Hulu factors into Conans ratings or general worth at NBC (maybe its simply discounted?), but if you are downloading it, then calling for the blood of NBC execs, you’re just as stupid as the people not watching it. Its like going to a 7-11 and asking them to keep stocking porno magazines so you could come in, look at them, but not buy them.

unless you are a nielsen viewer, it is irrelevant whether or not you watch the show on TV…

and that’d be silly if they ignored hulu views, i hope they’re not

I think Hulu is partially owned by NBC, so I imagine its views are counted. If that’s the case, things look even bleaker, since you can’t even make the argument that Hulu viewers are being discounted.

And aren’t the Nielsen boxes distributed randomly? It’s still telling if a sizable portion of the random participants aren’t watching.

we get Letterman every weeknight (it’s like a day or so behind), and only get conan and leno on pay channels

Yeah good point

yes, it is telling, but i was more responding to your point that all these conan fans were not watching. technically, only the conan fans who got the boxes who didn’t watch should be blamed.

i too havent watch late night in a while, but i’ve got to say, i have started watching now that they’re axing him, and conan is just tearing shit up. it would be funny if this entire thing was just one huge publicity stunt to spark ratings lol.

I’m under the impression that Nielsen viewers don’t know who they are, so if they don’t watch, they don’t even know if they’re affecting ratings. This is the only way I can imagine of accurately tracking normal viewing habits.

You will definitely know if you are a Nielsen viewer, since they actually send you a device so they can track what your watching. I think it’s called a Nielsen box or something. My cousin used to have one.

Nope.

show last night with QT was really funny. Too much Bettany though, not enough QT

another criticism of nielsen ratings is that they do an even worse job at estimating the numbers of late teens to mid/late twenties viewers because they put their machines in households and not college dorm rooms. they have taken measures to improve that over the past few years but it still is their weakest area.

“Late Shift 2: The Rolling Thunder of Revenge” needs to happen.

Online views may have some merit, but in general they aren’t counted as heavily as the Nielson ratings to the advertisers since they’re mainly interested in the live viewing when people are watching the commercials. DVR views are treated the same way because advertisers know that people will just fast-forward through those.

Interesting way to spin things. I think the truth lies somewhere in the middle.

the return of the masturbating bear!

That masturbating bear was always creepy to me.

I like how he just walked out like that. Was funny.
