As SaiST and Alpha mentioned earlier, Nagato can do all that soul pulling, psychic stuff on his own. So he’d just pull an Shang Tsung on anyone stupid enough to attack him if not for Plot no Jutsu, Pain bodies or not.
That’s not to say that Itachi wasn’t broken considering he was one of the strongest shinobi introduced, and this was with a terminal illness. But Pain shouldn’t have lost to anyone with his abilities. The dude can literally bring people back to life. That’s completely BS.
To be fair, he wasn’t exactly 100% when Naruto showed up, he just got through invading Konoha and destroying it, pretty sure that took a decent amount out of it.

and i’m not complaining, but the fact remains he needed a giant machine to get at naruto and most likely jiraiya too since his real body is never seen in that battle. every battle he fought he had buffs whereas everytime we see itachi he’s handicapped in some way, whether due to his clone only using 30% of his chakra, him having SARS or him just not really being interested in getting into a big fight yet he wins every time. i mean at this point i forget, but didn’t he pretty much beat sasuke and then decide “eh, i’mma die now”?
He used the machine of his own free will. By having six different bodies working in unison that can be revived you make yourself damn near unstoppable. And if anyone does manage to finish the bodies off he can simply replace them with new ones.
He fought smart and not hard, and made himself nearly invincible in the process. And Nagato can use all those abilities without the machine or the bodies, so had he chose to be a one man wrecking machine, he could have been. He was simply more interested in keeping his “God” persona.

From what I understand, the reason behind the machine is to send the transmissions to the chakra rods and control the bodies. He still can do that stuff on his own (see his flashback arc), but he uses the bodies instead. He wouldn’t have needed the machine to soul yank Naruto or Jiraiya, he just wouldn’t have had the assists (other than Konan).

Yeah Itachi pretty much jockslapped Sauce. The reason he went all out and used all his energy is because he wanted Sasuke to “defeat” him. Fact is, Sasuke at that time had pretty much zero chance of actually killing him but he needed him to. Thus giving him Mangekyou and allowing him to kill Madara (of course we know that didn’t work out as planned, silly Sauce).
That’s exactly it, and it’s almost embarrassing to know that so many people thought Madara was calling Konan “Nagato”. There were like three threads about this at NF.
again, i’m not saying pein isn’t smart/resourceful/whatever but he’s the quintessential squishy wizard which is why he needed his machine to keep him miles away from the actual battle. when people broke through itachi’s genjutsus he still could fuck them up with some melee attacks.
remember the jyuubi? a rinnegan with sharingan marks on each of the circles. i imagine madara wants something along those lines and even surpass rikudou sage and the jyuubi.
and besides madara, itachi was pretty much the only one that actually stood a chance at beating pain. in the end it comes down to both their strongest moves, chibaku tensei and susanoo.
also on the gai note, he def aint on par with kisame. looking at how deadbeat gai was after that move, he could probably go all 8 gates and do 1 more move and probably die himself and take kisame with him. if hes lucky enough. this kisame he beat was, hurt, weakened, didnt have much charkra left and couldnt replenish it before the battle (he tried it with tiger, failed), and add the fact that the sword can obsorb energy without him doing any jutsus and heal kisame at the same time. not to mention fuse with kisame. gai would have been fucked 1 vs 1 both full powered.
kisame had no sword, way less chakra (he was even skinny before he took some of bees), he was hurt, couldnt heal himself anymore without the sword. and he still went out like a g.
and again, itachi is still the shit even after his death. most interresting pair ever in aka. especially itachi, dude was straight pimp. beating people without even trying.
again i think you guys missing the point with kisame vs gai. It’s not about whose stronger, or shika would always have lost every battle he has ever been in. It simply comes down to gai using a jutsu that kisame completely misread. Full powered kisame would have fallen to that move just as much as w/e you wanna say kisame was at that time. Has nothing to do with his strength.
and i can’t believe you guys are trying to say Itachi could > pein. That’s so absurd. I don’t think Itachi could get past Deidara personally. Unless Itachi has kuchiyose

If Kisame was at full strength + sword, he could do that giant water sphere that sucks chakra. GG to Gai, IMO.
Didn’t Itachi defeat Deidara when they first met (I think Deidara immediately lost because of Itachi’s Sharingan)? Deidara later developed a counter-measure against the Sharingan, but he still lost to Sasuke.
Kisame tried to focus absorb Gai’s ultra, 'nuff said.
Itachi could most certainly whoop Deidara. I mean, he did it once (as per the flashback during the Sasuke-Deidara fight), so he could do it again. And even if Deidara has his anti-Sharingan techs, Amaterasu and Susanoo still trump whatever he had. Itachi vs. Pein…I dunno. Amaterasu is made pointless since the bodies created by the Six Paths of Pein don’t feel pain. Susanoo is good and all, but it’s still a 1v6 situation, in which all six are controlled by a remote source. Pein would win it easy.

not a question about them being better. Just some folks counter other folks. and honestly that would have to come down to whoever wrote that battle. Cuz i’ve seen sand stop ama, not sure if dei’s clay could do the same. If it could then yea. If not, then ama would definitly be the difference maker.

how is itachi vs. deidara even a question when deidara’s first meeting with akatsuki was itachi owning his ass for free?
if naruto could defeat the 6 paths of pain, odds are itachi could do it too considering he’s smarter, stronger and has a higher knowledge of jutsus. shit, the main reason jiraiya took the L was bcuz he didn’t know what he was up against and advantage that pain wouldn’t have. now remove his giant chakra channeling machine, what’s the max distance nagato can even control his people puppets? a couple of hundred or so yards?
it’s too bad neji didn’t get a crack at pain, he prob could’ve spottted him off in the distance…not that he’d be able to do anything about it, but he’d have given us a distance estimate on that shit.
