So the meta is obviously setplay, but what are the best teams for endless setplay/lock down/oki? Space stone seems like an obvious contender as well as characters like Dante or Jedah, but I wanted to see what everyone else thinks
Itās not Ultron/Dante Dante/Dorm levels of set play, but he has some solid post mix ups after his combos. Triple piercing tag is really cheap as he can do that in a lot of places in neutral and then Dante has a free projectile lockdown that comes from the air and keeps the opponent from jumping. He also uses it in the corner after crazy dance and has setups where Dante pretty much gets a free high/low after.
Being able to use Hawkeyeās entire moves list to assist another character (especially one like Dante) is really cheap. If Hawkeye lands a gimlet, Dante is going to find a way to combo off of it no matter what.
Yeah we were always the theory forum here trying to let people know that Zero and Viper were high tier characters and that Wesker was washed up and not the Alpha and Omega like the internet made you believe. I remember having a conversation with a guy on SRK in the Vergil forum who was convinced Vergil went through all kinds of struggle and just wasnāt one of the better characters. Shit was fun.
Space is better than all of the other stones pretty free so they are kinda right in that really every stone is ass compared to space, but mind is definitely slept on with the right teams. Messing around with my Mind Nova/Gamora I love that once Nova gets his first storm activated and gets those 3/4 bars, people start to clam up. Canāt do reality spam cuz javelins blow that up free and cause a hard knockdown that you can level 3 off of from full screen. Say reality one more time, just once more I dare you. Plus gravimetic blaster beam super reaction punishes. Powered up grav pulses also eat the surge and wall bound the opponent for combos.
With Gamora she gets really oppressive when she has shadow super ready. The amount of space you cover with shadow super arc shots is stupid as hell and once I get my conversions down Iām sure if any of it touches you get a combo. Plus itās free lockdown that they canāt pushblock out for Nova if heās still alive. I notice even Dante players calm down once I get shadow super as all of the stuff they usually throw and spam can get clipped and thatās all it takes to get put in a combo. Canāt do random million dollars gun super because guns will just tear through it and put you in combo.
Mind stone doesnāt give people easy options in neutral and the rest is the most character dependent stuff there is. Until people start seeing something oppressive like Morrigan bullet hell nobody will want a stone just for that meter.
Also, the big issue is whatās the gameplan until you have your storm? Gotta have something as a stop gap until you get meter or storm. Still too early to really see what the dominant stones are, plus weāll likely get some changes in a patch that switch things up for stone choice.
The biggest thing holding Mind back is the lack of truly oppressive hypers outside of the stuff you quickly build back. For example, Morrigan doesnāt need Mind that badly because she builds a shit ton of meter and her install lasts for ages. Similar issue goes for Zero and Dante. The characters that actually need that meter, like Arthur and Hawkeye, are kind of ass in general. Then you have dudes like Strange/Strider/Dormammu/Gamora that can do work with that meter, but unless youāre playing them together it isnāt worth it to force Mind onto another character.
Iām already convinced Space is far and away the best stone in the game. The only one that comes close is soul but Space is better than Soul still. Without any patches thereās really no reason to use any stone other than space as far as trying to win a tournament is concerned. Even in the local house of chaos weekly shit you can already see that most players are running to space now. It has the most powerful activation and limits the opponent the most of all of the stones.
The other stones have potential to move up as more tech gets discovered, but you can always still use your tag and counter switch options vs the other stones so they are inherently weaker due to that. Like even if you gathered a bunch of meters from your mind storm activation, once you get locked in the space box you canāt super tag to make supers safe or counter switch out if they hit you. Sets up your free level 3 the easiest of all of the stones.
With mind you donāt really need much of a gameplan. People get antsy as soon as you get near them especially once youāve landed your first mind surge grab. Gets people to chicken block a lot which opens them up faster. Just have to play high tier characters that can cover neutral well without a surge. Granted the storm is a bit tougher to build than other storms because you canāt really safely spam the surge, but once you get it itās mostly worth it with the right characters.
Itās funny how it it seems like noone seems to know how to approach with MH still. They just jump around with an easily uninterruptible slow j.H.
Weāve still got a while to really figure out this game boys. Certain characters will rule for a minute, but itās still what 3 months? Maybe with a patch
around the corner? Not regretting my purchase at all so far.
Iāve been running mind stone with Firebrand/Arthur and thatās been working out for me. I definitely think Chaos Tide can be really oppressive, and Iām fairly confident there are some filthy setups(Hopefully we get more FB players). Arthur is pretty good mind stone on itās own, but I think if you have 2 members of your team with install supers, mind becomes pretty nuts. Also Arthur has options to activate mind storm mid combo so he can end with a free level 3 into install. He can also tag FB mid combo after activating storm, which gives you even more options. I really want to try and find more ways to use the Mind Surge though. So far, the only use for it Iāve found is Arthur Spam them into a corner, and then throw some torches to force them to keep blocking, tag and mind surge.
Sidenote: I find it weird that I see so many people consider both characters top 10, but not many people play them. Is it because the top 5 are just that much better, or is it a comfort/familiarity thing?
People gravitate to the most intuitive and easiest to play. I wouldnāt call Arthur or Firebrand either.
Chaos tide is kind of like having your own reality storm thatās easier to combo after. I like it myself.
After using more tornadoes and Chaos Tide Iāve been giving people fits.
Is it me, or does Mind stone not give meter as fast as I thought it did.
Firebrand I guess thereās potential for top 10. Not sure why anyone would put Arthur in top 10 other than possibly for the utility of his level 3 which is pretty much a free THC during a storm. Looks like thereās enough gaps in it where you could pair him with Dormammu or someone that can port quickly and open someone up. Other than that heās just a decent character to me.
If youāre talking about the storm it doesnāt build the meter super fast on its own. Takes about 3 seconds to build one bar. They did that on purpose because itās not a static build. When you hit your opponent it stacks the meter build from you hitting the opponent with the passive meter build. So basically you might as well go HAM and look for the hit once you activate so you can get your 4 bars long before you can just waiting for it.
Only caveat to that is like every storm, your storm meter drains faster when you land hits, but the goal is to get the 4 bars as quick as you can any ways.
Makes sense, more reason for me to stick with Space/Reality. I find those stones the most intuitive, although Soul is probably stone #2 as far as overall utility. People are starting to really get creative with it. Teleport characters make the duo control a pain in the ass as it automatically sandwiches you. Now hereās a question since maybe I was just upbacking or not blocking properly.
In soul, if they switch which character they are controlling do you need to block in that characters direction or still the usual point? Iām sure itās the usual point, I just had a WTF moment during a raccoon sandwich.
Itās only the point character during the soul storm. Least thatās what Iāve heard.
I think if they both have you locked down the assist character canāt open you up. Like if youāre in block stun. If the assist character solo attacks you with a high or low I think that can open you up though.
They can switch which character they are controlling by holding the assist button, but that doesnāt change the direction you face then. Iām sure highs vs lows is still a mixup just not left vs right.
