MvCI Meta and Tier Discussion

What’s gonna be the scrub killer team?
I’m thinking gamora since her guns seem like something they can’t deal with

Hulk always defaults as scrub team and scrub killer team combined.

Scrubs will have no idea what to do against a good Dormammu. He floods the screen way too much and supposedly his dark holes build spells now.

Ghost Rider actually has movement and speed on his attacks now so he will get rage quit on a lot as well.

Hulk /cap

It’s cheating when you won’t let scrubs do exactly what they want

Sup ninjas. Don’t have a ps4 yet so I haven’t had a chance to play and I haven’t watched much in terms of game play. What I have noticed is Gamora seems like she has all the tools to be top tier from day 1 and stay that way. Dorm got better, Dante is… "Different " Iron man upgraded his armor and everyone else pretty much looks the same. What should I know about this game mechanicwise other than the stones, tag system and lack of x factor that I should peepers to adjust to?

Old Marvel 3 crew slowly coming back.

Ehh…what you’ll see in the first couple posts in the thread is most of what you need to know gameplay wise. I got a breakdown of some things and Olaf’s notes cover the rest. Anything else you would need to know will get discovered once the game launches and/or you get a PS4. Otherwise get ready for the next crack.

Some thoughts on character/stone combos that could be devastating:

  • Power: This seems like the perfect stone for Thor. The hitbox of Power Surge makes up for his slow normals defensively, he doesn’t use a wall bounce anyway, and he has a tridash + command grab to really exploit the shit out of the Power Storm. I forget if Ultron and Captain Marvel have true command throws or just hit grabs, but in the former case they would also be amazing with this stone. Jedah too, since he should have a command grab unless they heavily changed his move properties from VSav.
  • Time: A big factor in being able to abuse the Time Surge is whether or not your projectiles disappear if you get hit. Potentially being able to throw out a slower projectile, teleport, and apply pressure with a looming hitbox could be really strong if set up well. Part of the reason I want to play Arthur/Time is using his Ax toss this way, but other candidates include Spider Man (LP Web Ball) and Morrigan (Soul Fist).
  • Space: While command grab characters like Haggar have an obvious synergy with it, I think the tag system opens up some huge possibilities for this stone. Tag out during X’s double boomerang toss, and have the incoming character use the Space Surge to force them into the grinder. Doctor Strange sounds really cool on this stone because you can pull people into a stationary Eye of Aggomotto, and during the Space Storm you can set up all of your bullshit with him versus minimal disruptions.
  • Reality: The only thing scarier than giving projectiles to characters without them is giving them to characters who already have strong space control without any kind of lingering hitbox. Dormammu’s regular specials are all beam-type attacks that cover a specific area, and he generally needs 3 charges to get something that is hard to avoid. If he can have a Reality Surge out during his zoning, that’s yet another layer opponents have to claw their way through. And don’t get me started on the amount of space this fucker can control during a Reality Storm.
  • Mind: The Mind Surge is somewhat hard to optimize because it really isn’t a good move on its own merit, and any character who wants to use command grabs probably already has one. The best thing you can do is have some way to replicate Hidden Missiles in this game and grab people who are being conservative. Maybe Ultron (drones)/Rocket Raccoon (Groot)/Strange (triple daggers or the tracking eye)/Dormammu (spells) can do this? Strange and Dormammu seem like the best users of the Mind Storm out of the bunch, so they are solid picks on this stone.
  • Soul (how did I forget this?): The surge seems really general and hard to abuse because the life steal scales with damage scaling. As for the Soul Storm, managing two characters could be quite difficult unless you have a plan for what to do. Guys with long animations like Hulk or Thor could make it easier to control. Alternatively, if you want to go with theory god execution, doubling up on install supers from Strider/Zero/Gamora/Morrigan/Captain Marvel could be a legit strategy.

Captain Marvel has both. Ultron’s I believe is just a hit grab.

Ultron has a command grab super.

Interesting stuff. I have some theories too.

Optimal stone/character type combinations:

Power - Rushdown characters with strong engage tools and zoners with strong conversion tools

Time - Runaway/zoning characters with good projectile durability and powerhouse characters without mobility options

Space - Grapplers and mixup/teleport characters with high priority moves

Reality - Teleporters with high damage output and runaway characters with high mobility

Mind - Heavy setup-oriented characters and characters with quick hypers

Soul - Characters with big hitboxes and good defensive options

I can go into detail about each pairing with examples and explanations and such, but that’s a megapost I’m not ready to type out right now.

Dormammu in Reality Storm sounds like something F.Champ should be able to find a way to put so much shit on the screen that the frame rate starts slowing down. Can’t wait to see that in action.

I’m also not really sold on Mind surge, but if people are sleeping it has potential. Wondering if the air version of the surge will even get any use.

I also agree with power being good for zoners. Zoners will likely be able to set up stronger full screen fireball combos with the extra hit stun/stop. Then likely be more suffocating to deal with offensively or just tag into somebody like Spiderman or Captain Marvel and go HAM with pressure that they can’t push out.

There will be an interesting meta with the stones with who decides to use the power of the stones to fix the weaknesses of their characters. Then there’s also those that will use the stones to make the strengths of their character even stronger. Will be interesting to see what will be more important. Fixing weaknesses or making the strong parts of a character stronger.

And we will find a combination where a stone both covers a weakness and buffs a strength, in the same character as well.

And it’ll likely involve a character who’s name has 4 letters, but who you cannot divide by.

Ahh

Good news for us Hulk fans then.

How can you cover weaknesses if he has none?

I already know I’m going to supplement one of my team Bigs with the Soul Gem. That whip is a perfect projectile solution.

Haggar has 6 letters.

Something I just noticed today playing the demo, the game has a type of flying screen mechanic similar to MvC2. If you’re far back enough on one side of the screen and you KO the drone with a hard knockdown at the same time the next drone comes in, you will end up off screen and will dash in MvC2 style towards the next drone. However, during this forced dash you have full control so you have forced forward momentum but also control to do whatever you want. I doubt this will be practical in Vs mode, people might experience it in story mode, because it just seems a too uncommon situation to be in for it to be utilised effectively in competitive play.

Does it have the super jump and super restrictions of MvC2 flying screen? I remember only dhalsim could break it by himself
