It’s a good idea if you plan on finishing off the opponent, which you may be in a good position to do since combos ending in Tenraiha + Chireitou can end in upwards to 788k damage. You’re right on one point - Hsien-Ko does have an amazing corner pressure game. Between slow moving gong projectiles, Anki Ho item tosses, her :f::h: attack and jumping attacks, she can cover a limited space very well.
Yeah, I actually don’t use chireitou when I have them in the corner or sometimes I just don’t use it midscreen either just because sometimes it’s hard to get back the amazing positioning tenrai ha leaves you with so I just rimouken after my tenrai ha’s.
Nya, I did write a response then I realised there was an extra page I didn’t see, which pretty much covers what I said :3
Against certain characters pushing them away and harassing them with gongs, items and pokes isn’t a bad idea at times though :3
I’m tempted (lolmorrigan) to try this out. I’ve been thinking about putting Spence in a team as an anchor anyway, so I’m fine with this.
ok, i’ve been trying lei lei/random/morrigan
and I really like the concept of it however damage output is a huge issue
because with her you usually use meter for ender damage but now you’re using it for armor
so it’s like you touch them 5 times and they’re at half life burning a bunch of meter
or you’ve kept them blocking for a long time spent about 5 meters and have 20% damage output to show for it
I may have to start using exchange combos which is not appealing to me because if broken lei lei is on the sidelines
oh and morrigan I think does even worse damage than lei lei lol so two low damage chars with limited meter for enders third char should be a stud. Dorm has worked best for me also trying modok out
Well, that’s why it needs to be self-sustaining, or close. Hsien-ko’s normal ground throw leads to a full combo, and if you give her an OTG assist, so does her air throw. Anyway, I tried this strategy, and it actually works very well, but I put Dormammu on point and ran away while building meter with Morrigan assist before bringing Hsien-ko out. I’m not very good at the execution level required for this, but I think it’s actually a viable way to make Hsien-ko work.
You can superjump and follow them out of Chireitou, even landing a sj.H on the way down. Generally, you do this to kill your opponent, though.
This is why I think, ideally, your third character has an OTG assist for her, to make the damage worth it. Plus, Rimoukon will probably run out during your long combo at some point, giving you more time to call Morrigan, time when you don’t need the hyper up, and you can build meter while Rimoukon is off. Plus, if your OTG assist hits low, you now have a way to create unblockables with Hsien-ko’s pressure game, and it’s not at all unreasonable to think you can get them off.
So, ideally, I think something like Wesker/Hsien-ko/Morrigan is ideal. Just troll with Samurai Edge for a while with Wesker while calling Morrigan, and then get Hsien-ko in once you have a nice stock of meter to start her Rimoukon spam off with.
i’ve been using dorm believe it or not as my third for this team
I think the otg assist would be everything you say it is plus having extended combos would help meter gain
however the problem I have is like what Renegade was saying; she’s so easy to block that
once they realize that they shouldn’t push buttons and should just block(pushblock) and wait for an opening
which I think beats the strategy(unblockable setups aside) because then how do you armor back up if they block everything wesker’s assist can’t really cover you right?
with dorms dark hole(when rimoukon is running out), it actually doesn’t matter to me whether or not they block or get hit because during my block string I call dorm and the hole basically gives me the time I need to armor up and senpu bu in before they’re out of block stun and they can’t push me out because dorm hit first and if they push block me during the block string sometimes it’s still in dark hole range.
So… Now that we’re all back, anyone discover anything new over the downtime? And does anyone have videos of LL.ND’s matches from last WNF? Levelup hadn’t posted them yet last time I checked.
I’ve been playing this game a bit more recently (had gone back to SSF4) and am having reasonable success. My combos with Hsien Ko, while not spectacularly damaging, DHC well to Shuma’s Mystic Ray. I really do think they work well together. Mystic Ray assist helps swat some annoying flies as well.
yeah, I was just watching the vids earlier today I’ll try and find them again and post them in the vid thread
This was me, by the way folks.
Mystic Ray assist helps with teleporters, especially predictable Dantes. Which is good, because Ko has a hard time with teleporters.
And thank you iinara for posting the matches. I’ll watch them later when I have time; I’ve heard good things about them.
Did anyone catch LL.ND on WNF? I missed it, though I saw he got knocked out after a couple battles.
Also, threads are all screwed up for me. Posts are arranged like stairs descending to the right, and they get narrower and narrower until each line is only one letter long. Anyone else having this problem?
Not having that problem no. And I saw the LLND matches, they were pretty sweet.
Good to hear it. Are the matches up anywhere? I can’t find them on YT or justin.tv.
And it seems like the thread problem is specific to Safari, because it was all messed up on my iPhone (even freezes up when trying to load the second page of the team building thread) but it’s fine when I’m on Chrome. Huh.
The WNF matches were on level up’s page the other day. LLND was landing some sweet extended corner combos with Hsien Ko.
Once again, I missed WNF (it’s on so late for where I am, so I usually just watch the documented footage). I still can’t find any of LL.ND’s matches from last week, either. Any links, and did he do anything good this week as well?
So I’ve decided to re-think how else to make our lovable jiangshi last longer and having Trish on your team definitely helps in a multitude of ways. Haven’t bothered yet to see if Chireitou will activate the same DHC trick as other characters, but having Hopscotch is a major plus to the team. Low Voltage increases LeiLei’s field control presence and already controls characters who have poor mobility better than before. In the recent local ranbat, I got about 8th using the combination of Trish/LeiLei. If Trish is also starting off, at any point you manage to set out a Round Harvest guarantees you’ll be able to tag in for Rimoukon and get out before the hyper’s over. So setting up the fabled assist is pretty easier and practical in a fight.
Let’s say you’re trying to be gutsy and get the offense rolling like I do. Especially effective in a corner, using Anki Hou H in tandem with her low attacks creates a piss poor easy unblockable that the foe can’t really shake off if Round Harvest pins them down on the ground. A common set-up I like to do is after a Trish BnB, use Round Harvest and tag in Lei Lei. If I’m too far away, Senpu Bu lets me get closer and set up an Anki Hou at the very least. The closer your are, the easier it is to set up the unblockable trap. I was thinking of trying out Chris/LeiLei/Trish, but I find Wesker does the job just as well. My biggest gripe with the strategy is that this is very meter hungry and putting in Morrigan for meter build will only lower the team’s maximum damage output. No OTG support also hurts.
Any assist or move that gives her the time to inch forth and carries the battle near the corner seems to be the goal. The more I experiment with her, the more I feel I’m learning how to play Dhalshim or Vega… x3
Hmm… that unblockable stuff reminds me of Anki Hou mixups in VSav. Does it work with other characters as well, or even with just assists?
Well the key here is to pin the opponent down. Trish does it super easy, as does Ammy assist or even Dooms Hidden Missile (kinda iffy on this one, but workable.) What LLND showcased is that Lei Lei is very strong at controlling the pace of the match once you get an idea of what to do. She’s weak to a lot of the top used characters because of how fast they can cross the gap, but setting up enough traps and schenanigans allow our dead girl to do what she needs to do. Some smart things from LLND’s ReveaLAtions videos that more Lei-Lei players need to be doing:
- Get those combos down. She already does piss poor damage as a whole, but every little bit counts.
- If you’re by yourself, popping a Tenraiha + XFC gives you a moment to get in. The balls still are active until they poof or they get a hit in, so this might be a not bad Phoenix strat.
- Utilize Senpu Bu + lockdown assists to get in there. Plink Dashing also works in junction with a beam assist.
Now I see that I didn’t get too much into Hopscotch with Trish, but it’s basically the same thing as Chris’s Mine assist or a Dorm putting out a flame carpet. When you need a bit of space and wanna zone, this provides a wall that the foe has to get through. Especially useful against characters who don’t have great mobility or need to whiff a move in order to get in. Top tier Wolverine right now happens to be one of them and the mentality you have to keep is, “What do they have left if I do X to take away their X?”
Hopscotch stays out and if they do run into it, they’ll block it or take the hit. It’s not destroyable like Peekaboo and this gives Lei-Lei a few options. You could go for an air grab and maybe get some damage in depending on your team configuration. You also could back dash away and reset the situation or even initiate a dash of your own and cancel it at any point to whatever. All of this and more has to be done rather quickly, as Hopscotch doesn’t give THAT much hitstun. Personally, I favor Chris’s mine a bit more cause it does the same thing and OTG’s. Trish’s is better for controlling aerial foes a bit.
Going back to the Wolverine part, Hopscotch/Mine forces him to rethink how to get in so long as it’s out. Berserker Slash + Charge still is viable, but you can anticipate it and respace appropriately. I’ve greeted a few Logans with a standing H -> combo because of Lei-Lei’s impressive range. A combination of reading the Slash, then backdashing a bit and tossing out the standing H just so that the edge of the hitbox will connect. Dive Kicks still are a thing, but he has to angle it better and you can always greet that with either command normal or a gong. Gongs + command normals do wonders to keep out characters with poor approach options, like Chun-Li.
I plan to see what else can be done without delving too much into commonly used characters. Storm, like somebody said earlier, is a very strong partner to Lei-Lei because of DHC and Whirlwind’s pushback. Pushing towards the corner, where we can really start throwing in our control game.
