MvC3 Tournament and Stream commentary thread

If you look inside the MvC3 official guide you’ll see a lot of bad combos that aren’t worth using as a bread and butter ABC or otherwise. A lot of them use unnecessary moves that do nothing but scale damage and leave out the big damage moves that those characters commonly use in their combos. It’s a great guide, but the combos are not worth using in competitive play for the most part.

You sound pretty butthurt, probably because you got suckered into buying a guide for a game that’s constantly evolving.

Why would they do 3 month old combos when there’s more efficient ones out?

The combos in the guide were meant as a baseline, or a way of demonstrating what is possible more than anything else. Learning them as go to combos for competition is silly. For competition you want to optimize between meter gain, damage, and reliability, so the simplest combo that puts you in a favorable position, and is meter positive or neutral is generally what you want to aim for.

You’re absolutely right. The most popular characters in the game have really easy combos–and those chars are some of the best. This is nothing new. Sent players figured this out on Day 1. I think it’s a scary decision on the designer’s part, because everyone gets a chance to blow it up. I also like it because it lets people spend more time on the strategy component of the game.

Of course, some players pick Wolverine and ignore strategy and execution. zing

Tatsu, why you so gdlk?

when i got on the stream and heard niggas using based and swag i thought everyone of my friends had gotten into fighting games. it was a glorious moment…for 5 seconds

YEEEAAAAAHHH!!! combofriend!

combofiend is a KILLER. that’s funny viscant wasn’t able to put away combofiend with a wesker, phoenix/DP, and tron assist.

Sentinel’s easy combos lose him meter, that is not good. That’s why you see all of the good Sentinels doing Fly, Unfly, Rocket Punch, Double Jump combos. Not really because they do more damage but because they build more meter. The only times I’ve seen someone do S super jump M-H-S with Sentinel on a stream in a long time is if they’re either a bad Sentinel just using the drones assist or if that is all they will need for the kill so don’t want to risk dropping anything else.

I’m going to a tourney today. BBL to tell my story about my lv 3 x factor wesker loss.

Swag. I swear that girl’s commentary was more insightful than hearing swag over and over again. Swag. My mind is full of swag.

Go to justin.tv/armshouse and check out Aarons Dormammu every week.Best Dormammu i’ve seen yet in my opinion.

Phoenix is such a gimmick. She’s scary until she runs into somebody that isn’t afraid of her throwing fire on the screen and makes sure her life is in danger anytime she is on the screen. Snap her in with a strong assist mix up and kill her early or if DP comes out get to the corner and do the chicken stuff. If they tone XF down she’s in trouble. She’ll still be among the best but by far the most risky which will inevitably see less tourney play of her. When someone else other than Combofiend goes to the corner against D.P…good luck getting anything other than lucky throws or some chip while you gotta worry about dying to guard cancels, random supers and ABCS. No corner teleport mix up = go back to Dante and Wesker who can.

The highest level Phoenix will ever get is someone who takes the risk and burns meter to kill people off early and then uses the power of regular Phoenix (or maybe get lucky and still get D.P.) to finish shit off. The holding on to 5 bars and XF3 shit is on its way out. That shit isn’t beating people who think unless you get a ridiculous life lead first. Viscant needs to stop using c.H in Wesker bnbs also. s.H doesn’t whiff and lose you matches.

If anything people need to be more afraid of Wolverine than Phoenix. Wolverine always has XF on and doesn’t have to worry about 5 meter shit hold onto XF shit. Round 1 fight he’s Phoenix with claws and his own mini XF. Viscant’s Phoenix is successful mostly because he thinks outside of the “hold on 5 bars plus XF3” concept but she has to rely on the out of box stuff to stay in against people who think. Which you can do and be successful with anybody. If a Phoenix team gets a big health lead on you that is a problem but there’s definitely possible to stop a team that’s afraid to burn meter to keep from getting a big life lead.

Respect to America and Karate Man.

Damn, Phoenix for D tier I guess.

Lol @ the guy complaining about non strategy guide combos.

News flash genius, when someone has 30-40% life left why the hell would you be going for more complex stuff when ABC will work for the kill? I would rather win not using a single combo than lose and land a couple Godlike combos.

Get your head off combos son, more to a fighting game than that.

Yeah i was facepalming when viscant could have used a meter to finish one of combofiends characters but had to save it for phoenix.

This is Marvel 3 right? WTF is snapback? That is so Dreamcast era.

WNF 4.4 Viscant vs Combofiend grand finals was amazing, like 25 minutes of great MVC3. I’m pumped, and I like Viscants switch to Tron over Iron-Man.

Now he just needs to learn combos with her, haha. She can use Phoenix’s assist to extend her strings as well.

Also congrats to Renegade for running Wesker/Tron/Phoenix before a big name player picked it up.

WNF wasn’t archived yet, huh?
