MvC3: Final Justice! The Captain America Thread

I have noticed cap have issues with zoning. But honestly with a couple of well timed cartwheels and a few neutral jumps he can get in eventually. I have a buddy who plays a keep away team and i practice against to see what are caps viable get in moves. Trish doesn’t give me to much issues I figure she can only stay up there so long and when she hit the ground i got some cartwheel mix-ups for her to block. Honestly I struggled with the cap In MvC3. I didnt really play marvel as serious as i am now but I’ve noticed hes rough to play then. Seems like In MvC3 I had to build around him to make him work and i dont like doing that much. I like to Make my team work well with each other (or How they work together for my play style) and not having to change my team to characters im not particularly interested in because they have a good assist. the team im running currently is Nems Cap nova. PPL say my order is bad and blah blah blah… But it works for me and it compliments my play style. BUT BUUUT the issue i am having and its starting to bug me a bit is normally when Cap is in there with nova and nems still being alive its still kinda hard to cover myself from some distances and i’m starting to see the value of a good beam assist. also If someone can paint me a picture on what frames cap is invincible on the cartwheel. I have an idea but i’m not 100%. I Catch myself doing some cart wheel mix ups on there INC char and catch myself getting Whipped across the face when they come in attacking… Thanks again

Well, the thing is it’s kind of easy to see coming, and she can unfly/block.

More importantly however, the trap she lays on the ground activates the moment I appear above her and hits me before I make contact (In the best of cases it trades, which is a favorable trade for Skrull.). I used to be able to AD and block the trap, then Down-Forward H to either grab her or start a combo.

The problem is that now, the ONLY option I seem have is meteor smash and that she has ways to deal with it. I mean, against bad ones I can wait for the dive kick, run behind it and beat it with St. H, but yeah…

Trish is pretty much the only zoning character that gives me consistent trouble (With Zero as an honorary mention) because of the unique zoning style they have. Conventional zoners get hurt pretty bad by Chris’ machine gun coupled with CS. Even CS>HCS is good if you have good reactions.

My way to deal with trish is 1 word. . . . .GIMLET!

Lol on another note! I placed first in a ps3 Ultimate tourny. And second in the xbox version! :smiley: Cap is really doing me wonders. . . . . now all I have to do is get on a spooky stream and show the world!

Who’s on your team then if you have to much trouble.

I haven’t had much time to play umvc3 so far, but when I do I’m planning on running Cap, Frank West, and Ammy. I was wondering what people thought about this team comp. Cold star and shopping cart just seem great for Cap but might be too similar. Cold star is great for Frank since he can roll too. My main concern is if I’ll be able to deal with fliers with this team. I played Wolverine, Ryu, Sentinel in vanilla, so I don’t have much experience with these characters yet

Soooooo. . . . .I was in the lab today working on a lot of theory stuff that was going on in my head. And I must say. . . . .Cap is probably one of the best tournament viable characters out there lol. And the only reason nobody knows it is because I haven’t shown it to everybody yet lol. I have a lot of technology that I haven’t really talked about yet with Cap and with hawkeye. . . . . .but in due time my friends lol in due time. Lol Cap renders characters like dr. strange and hawkeye useless, I made a 700k + combo with hawkeye that has easy execution lol. I just need this saturday to come so I can go to my big tournament and really do well. Its time to level up guys. . . .I mean SERIOUSLY level up lol. East coast major’s here I come. :smiley:

yeah he is amazing. TOD’s all over the place, and just so many tools.

any of you guys can give me tips on HOW to practice air grabbing people? i play sets with this guy who can just air grab me like crazy no other. this is the part of my game that I see that i could improve on.
anyone know of the science of air grabbing?

Well before december 19th when the patch comes out. . . . just mash forward or backward H. . . lol literally. The throw glitch allows you to tech at anytime and pretty much throw at anytime so yea. … . mash lol

i know the thing is he is air grabbing whiffed air normals(like d.h or trish dive kick) so i never see it coming. I don’t quite know how to practice this because it seems like something that you do on the fly

so most spencers I play constantly approach with j.horizontal zipline. They just dont stop until they get an accidental crossup into ToD. The matchup is killing me.

jumping horizontal shield doesnt have enough priority to beat the zipline.

hyper stars and stripes is unreliable because after the zipline he ha an ambiguous crossup, so its hard to input a super.

cant reliably throw him because there is usually a beam assist or drones in the way.

advice?

yes. the zipline once it hits the wall has no hitbox, so you can air grab that. also know that horizontal zipline will always bring him to the corner so block accordingly(i try and not corner myself so much against spence). this is similar to x-23 horizontal kick to dive kick that always puts her to the corner.
going for the throw when he’s backed up with assists is definitely doable, but sometimes it’s easier to block.
if he’s not backed by assist you can front dash under the zipline and punish him as spencer does his air normal(usually by standing LMH).

You’re looking at the problem all wrong. The problem is you’re still there when he’s calling sentinel, and you’re not doing anything about sentinel either. If he’s mashing on this approach that goes way over your head, Charging Star to hit sentinel through the drones, problem solved. If you really want to light up sentinel, if you have the right safeness in your DHC’s, you can use HCS, potentially pick up Spencer too and either get a ton of damage on sentinel safely or kill two characters.

You can also in general safely tag sentinel to remove the drones with jL shield slash or jM shield slash

this. when an ooponent’s point character leaves the ground, he generally cannot defend his assist. u should always be ready to punish this. vice versa, its a bad habit to call an assist when you can’t readily defend them or if its unsafe to call

Sooooo very true, I use Charging Star every chance I get as a punish. It has the side benefit of making people afraid to call assists or in general do a lot of other things. Of course don’t get star struck, and just throw it out any time you feel like it…death is pretty lame.

sentinel is easy to handle vs people who just call him out as a go to for every “i’m more than half screen away” situation, you’re shields should put a stop to it whether through l shield slash in the air or h charging star or whatever - you can even just superjump then double jump out of there… the trouble comes with people who actually know how to play the game. LOL

as with most UMvC problems.

The strategy I mentioned is effective against Filipino Champ, GCYoshi and Rowtron, to name a few

of course, done in moderation it’ll work very well

anything that can be read (especially a move like charging star with a lot of endlag even if you cancel into one of your hypers (unless you dhc to safety) is very punishable

but yeah that’s kinda what cap does! h charging star is suuuuuper fast and awesome, then you can cancel into hss and dhc and keep it rolling and from 3/4 screen off an incredibly fast hit they are dead hahaha

Maybe it’s just a mental block or something, but I can’t seem to do much against her unless the Trish player sucks.

IDK about THE best, but yeah, he’s definitely good and underrated still.
