I think Magneto is the best measuring stick for what should be acceptably broken in this game. He isn’t ridiculous, but he is really solid in all areas while still being a killer. You also need decent execution with Magneto if you want to be really threatening.
Phoenix is still really stupid, but that’s only because X-factor level 3 is incredibly stupid. Without the ridiculousness of full blown X-factor she can still be managed, Wolverine with just XF1 on the other hand is just as destructive and he doesn’t have to save 5 bars beforehand.
Well at least Wolverine does a good job balancing Phoenix. LOL. Wolverine just has too much going for him. His normals have practically the best hit boxes in the game next to Zero but gets a bit more of a health threshold, his combos are impossible to drop and his combos turn into death touch with XF1 with enough time to kill off 2 people. His dive kick being able to cross up and ground bounce and getting easy full combos off left right berserker slash is perfect for snapping in and killing off Phoenix. He has the easiest access to most of the high level tools and mix up the game presents. There’s other characters that can do certain other scary things that he might not be able to but he has the best mix of everything needed to be scary. The fact that his hit boxes are so retarded on all of his normals and specials means he doesn’t have to block very often since his hit boxes basically block for him.
Cover him with an assist and you really have to screw up to get hit. Basically Zero without the work and faster. The absolute ease of use of the character + his tools makes him number 1. No other character is that easy to use and that powerful. Until they either make him harder to use or tone down some of his offense he’s just going to be a fool proof character that only loses if he runs into something random. The fact that Marn had trouble not getting hit by Noel’s Wolverine when Zero is a character I think should do pretty decent against him just goes to show that people are just not ready for the new death touch Wolverine. He’s basically scarier than Phoenix because at least Phoenix you can control her scariest form from entering the match. Wolverine is as scary as Phoenix as soon as the match starts.
I still think characters like Dante and Zero can possibly counter him but Wolverine is so good that even if he were to lose to them the game works where one hit can kill them off also. That’s why I’ve been saying for a while that the real problem is the teams that you put together and Wolverine + assist obviously will be running the game until Super MVC3. Wolverine/Assist/Phoenix is still the cheapest team in the game in my eyes.
the 50/50 left right seems to be ruling this game more than high low… i wonder if teleporters with a really quick fullscreen assist backing them would be able to accomplish the same thing? like dante or dorm with shuma assist? idk cause i dont have the DLC for shuma.
but if its working and is good, might as well see what other characters have a ghetto version.
Left/Right is always going to be king in this game, since chicken blocking can really take the sting out of the high/low mix-up. You look at the Top 5 characters in this game and they pretty much all have a great Left/Right game (Wolverine/Phoenix/Wesker/Dante).
Spider-man is definetely a sleeper that isn’t bottom tier, but neither is he going to be good enough to be appearing frequently in teams. The problem with him isn’t damage or that he can be zoned out easily (complete nonsense for anyone claiming that), it’s that like Super Skrull most of Spiderman’s moves have very poor recovery and in the end Spiderman is a high risk, medium reward character that’ll too easily punished.
^ Or even easier, blow up Akuma assist. Personally with Storm on my team I can kill Akuma / Sent assist on reaction with 2 bars if their point character is blocking. If their point character is blocking, the super damage goes unscaled throughout its duration + a 50% damage bonus. That means supers that are normally subject to heavy scaling like Storms super need to be looked into.
same with my ironman storm sent team. hidden missiles tron sent akuma all get blown up for free if point doesnt absorb damage. in fact, in those circumstances even thor gets melted for full hp if all 3 characters come out and the point blocks
but be careful with hailstorm it doesnt actually hit on first frame its just “active” on first frame… it takes the hail 1-3 frames to hit the ground or put a really low crouch blocking character in guardstun… calling out 3 characters against an active berserker slash can get all 3 characters blown up if timed late.
What the hell are you smoking? Magneto only seems acceptable because of Captain Retard Rage. He’s a walking option select and the execution requirements to play him are actually quite laughable.
Yeah Magneto’s fancy stuff requires execution but his basic H air dash forward loops are enough to blow people up. The fact that him moving towards you mixes you up is a big deal. If his hit boxes were a bit cheaper he would be up there with Wolvie but it’s only really his air H that has a strong hit box. His ground normals are rather unsafe outside of his short ranged c.L. L Disruptah spam is good but the projectile durability on it is terrible and loses to most aerial projectiles. His air projectile game is much more limited and less of a threat.
I agree with Wonderswan. He’s really good but his hit boxes just aren’t as cheap as Wolverines. Most characters can control his approach since it’s reliant on wave dashes which can be air thrown.
In this game the highest tiers are generally the characters with the best left right mix and the characters with the cheapest hit boxes. Characters like Dante, Zero, Wolverine are at the top because they can block with their face. Their hit boxes block and set up offense for them. In a game where you can die in one touch you wanna have characters where when you press on buttons people have to worry.
It’s the option selected tri-dash throw, high/low into death that makes him ridiculous. If you plink the air dash, you always get a throw attempt and, just like Wolvie, you’re almost better off being sloppy and unable to gauge spacing for shit because you’ll automatically do a high/low mixup by whiffing the j.L.
I don’t even think acceptable is the right word. I’m also pretty confident in saying that he [Magneto] has the best throw game in the game. That alone can shut down so many characters it’s not even funny.
This… times about 1000. Option select tri-dash/throw or get hit with akuma into full combo-DHC-kill-wash-rinse-repeat. Life with Magneto in general really
So at the highest level of play, MVC3 is quickly coming down to two teams archetypes…
Team 1:
Wolverine
Akuma/Sentinel
XXX
Team 2:
XXX
YYY
Phoenix
Mehhh… this is quite sad to see, as I was hoping for more diversity being viable in tourneys at this point in time. Sadly, it all came to this after 5 months of this game…and I doubt it will change from now on… Combofiend and a few other players being the exceptions…
LOL, everyone thought that the DLC glitch would be running the game, but at this point, it is a non-factor really compared to the BS that Wolverine and Phoenix brings…
Oh well, luckily we have SSF4 AE and MK9 to keep us busy while we wait for Super MVC3…
yea im really disapointed by this…in ssf4 at least we saw more variety in the game and it made things interesting…now its wolverine or phoenix; get used to it.
