MvC3 Actual Balance/Potential Tiers Discussion

Wishlists of changes for some patch (that probably won’t happen) is kinda off-topic to the tier thread.

Any buff that Hsien-Ko might receive during gold armor would only be useful when she’s called as an assist. On point, the buff only lasts 5 seconds. As KJunk said though, wish lists are probably saved for another thread.

With that said, in the game’s current state, there exists an inarguable gulf of power between the best characters and the worst characters. There are 3 possible scenarios for how this plays out:

1: Capcom realizes the issue and makes significant buffs to the weaker members of the cast, bringing them up closer to their higher-tier counterparts.
2: Capcom realizes the issue and decides that it would take too much work to rebalance characters that need it, instead choosing to bring nerfs to the top tier characters that currently dominate the roster in an effort to somewhat even the playing field.
3: Capcom does nothing. Lower tier characters gradually get phased out as players refine the top tier characters more and more. MvC3 becomes MvC2, with only a slightly larger cast of characters that are used according to a player’s strategy. Fans of low tier characters utter silent prayers to the CapGods that Super MvC3 would improve their neglected favorites.

I’d much rather see the first option more than anything. We live in a world of connected gaming where patch updates are a reality. Balance should be something that is pursued and encouraged in the fighting scene, not feared and rebuked. Balance promotes variety, not the other way around.

I’d like Arthur to have 600k unarmored, 800k armored, and 1mil gold.

Iron Man’s health is fine. He has mobility and is versatile, so 950k health works well.

The thing is, though, that Wesker has too much mobility and options compared to other characters in his health bracket and even some below. At least Chris and Taskmaster are kinda slow, so the high health actually makes sense on them. I’d also consider bringing up Ryu and Captain America’s health to 1.1 mil because of their poor mobility and no-frills gameplay. I’d also probably bring Wolverine’s health down to something like 850k (like the way he is in practically every other VS game). Also, like everyone else has stated, Arthur needs a health buff. Somewhere around 900-950k would work (he’s small, like Joe, Zero, and Ammy, so 1 mil might be problematic).

Honestly, though, most characters are fine. It’s just that some characters seem to be a little underpowered, while others seem to have too much going for them.

One other thing, though: Doesn’t everyone find it interesting/strange that pretty much all of the best characters outside of a few surprise choices (She Hulk, Taskmaster) happen to be the “fanboy” characters? Like Dante/Zero/Wolverine/Wesker would be extremely common even if they were mediocre. Making them the best characters in the game just seems to amplify their presence even more and makes it seem like if Capcom had a tier list in mind before their game even came out.

Assuming this is with the exception of The Avengers?

I personally like a fighting game with a bit of variety on character potential.
And I dont look at it as a direct attempt to make one char better than another.
I think its just an attempt to make chars that play differentlly.
Some will be more capable of winning more than others.

But honestly its not just about the W’s its about fun right…
You might really enjoy HsienKo and have a blast playing as her all day, but you might when more with Wesk… its your choice

Pretty smart if this was intentional.

I almost gurantee that this game would be much less popular if Hsien Ko, Felicia, Ryu, and Modok were the best characters lol

*Surely *you jest!

They should not have been made “the best” at the expense of other characters.

I only have a few complaints about the balance

  • Wesker lower health by 200K

  • Phoenix… but I really don’t know how you would fix this character. Make DP a self activation level 5 hyper… If Phoenix dies and you haven’t activated tough luck. Would take away the whole stupid but effective strategy of running away for 40 seconds.

  • Sentinel 200K health buff. He is a big freaking clunky robot. It isn’t like he has anythign Godlike to open you up with.

  • Buff the bad characters. Don’t nerf the good ones, stuff should be cheap and abusable.

This game is like 90% “fanboy” characters so IDK how that’s an issue. The only character I didn’t know before Marvel was Taskmaster, Dormammu, and M.O.D.O.K.

Give someone a meter-stealing move. Instant Phoenix counter. Shuma Gorath would be the best candidate for this.

YES. The presence of an Omega Red-esque character would be an annoying hard counter for Phoenix.

It’d be a feat to put Dante in any proper fighting game and make him crap. Maybe in SF4 but that’s about it.

Let’s get the tier thread back on topic. Take the balance changes you want to see to the Balance thread here: http://forums.shoryuken.com/t/mvc3-balance-tweaks-take-2-x-factor-harder/126181unread

Any surprises from UFGT7 that changed people’s opinions?

If you have Wolverine within the top 5, you’re overrating him.

wesker losing 200k health is kinda ridiculous imo. i think 1 mill would do him just fine.

No Way. Wolverine is amazing… probably the best starting point. He makes you afraid to press the assist button.

PR Rog is still OCVing with Wolverine all the way into Top 8, I don’t know what you’re talking about.

Wesker is better than him on point imo.

Not at starting point. Wolverine + an assist is absolutely incredible. WIthout an assist, yea Wesker for sure. But considering most Wolvie players start with him he usually always has an assist.

Watching Frankie G brain fart and not cancel whiffed Plasma Beam into Photon Array to kill Wolvie gives me the impression that mistakes make Wolverine look better than he really is.
