MvC3: 2/3rds: The Morrigan Team Building Thread

So, im curious now. Could someone compare the shells of Morrigan / Doom VS Morrigan / Strider? Im really curious what the big differences are, and why someone would want to use Vajra with Morrigan, over Missles with Morrigan…without including a third character needing either missles or vajra.

Discuss?

Im pretty damn sure ive got my team narrowed down to 1 of 3.

Deadpool / Morrigan / Strider

Morrigan / Strider / Doom (only if I absolutely have no other choice that I like)

Spiderman / Morrigan / Strider

some variant of Vergil/Morrigan/Doom(or Strider). I don’t think the
conflicting meter usage would be an issue, as IMO Vergil using meter is
far more dangerous than Morrigan using meter. Spiral Swords and Devil
Trigger are amazing, and having basically a constant source of meter
with Vergil would be nightmarish. Doom or Strider both have a variety of
roles and purposes, and both benefit each character a lot.

Doom: HM extends both Vergil and Morrigan combos
HM has longer blockstun than Vajra
HM can stop combos (over a longer duration than other assists)
Morrigan can convert off of HM
Doom can kill w/o XF pretty consistantly
Can timer scam better, can chip better w/o XF
Strider: Vajra comes out quicker
If Vajra hits, Vergil can XF cancel High Rise for a kill, they might fall into SF flood
Vajra forces opponent back down on block (?)
Strider is much better with XF than Doom is, and still has good mixup/cross up setups w/o XF

I’m sure there’s more than just this lol, but it’s late, I can’t think
straight, I don’t play Vergil or Strider and so I kind of regret making a
dumb list. But I’ll leave it. Morrigan/Vergil/Doom might be better
simply because XF2 Vergil with like 1-2 meter is insane.

As for playing Morrigan/Strider/Doom, Morrigan/Doom/Strider would be a much much much better order. As for narrowing down your team, why narrow down when you can play all of them? Lots of the best players have multiple teams (Yipes, JWong, FChamp), and that’s because (asides from talent) they know that certain teams deal with different match ups better. That’s why I’m personally learning Magneto/Morrigan/Doom to compliment my Morrigan/Doom/Ammy, and I’ll most likely learn Vergil and Dante once I’m done with Magneto.

Lol I meant narrow it down in terms of my Morrigan team (which I want to be my main team). My secondary team is zero / hawkeye / strider

Vajra comes with a good anchor and allows certain characters to fit better onto a morrigan team. Strider pretty much has to be last on this shell, and you’ll probably want morrigan first. Notable middle characters for this shell are: doom, dante, wesker, vergil. Vajra is a physical hit so it gets in the way of people attempting projectile counters that would work against missles and soul fist. Vajra is a little less well rounded than missles in terms of matchups. Morrigan+strider loses to opponents with vajra and skrull which arent as big of a problem with missles.

Morrigan+Doom is the best morrigan shell/duo. The team structure is more open ended. Your third character can be your anchor of choice, a point character that is good at building meter and only needs missles, or a character that has good DHC synergy with morrigan. The most notable choices are vergil, magneto, strider, and akuma. This shell is more open to uncommon character choices though. For example Arthur anchor works with this shell.

If you want to use neither of those shells, there are 1-2 choices. The first is just run her anchor. Just realize she isn’t that good as an anchor. It’s really a gamble on matchups since she beats characters like wesker solo, but loses terribly to most teleport characters, especcially vergil. Teams are a bit limited too since your middle character basically has to work without a beam, projectile or lockdown assist to help in the neutral. It could work with dorm, trish, or vergil, and probably a few others but I haven’t ran her as anchor in a while.

The last option, which I’m not even sure how good it really is anymore is JJJ’s team. It’s morrigan/storm/felicia or more importantly morrigan with a low assist. The idea is to cover your approach with a fireball and approach with a low assist and j.S at the same time causing an unblockable. JJJ was really the only one who has had any success with this though.
Don’t forget about Alioune’s team - mags/morri/phoenix
Played Magneto/Morrigan/Doom all weekend and today, it’s a really solid team. Unfortunately, the reason I picked it up was that I was hoping I would do better against point Vergil teams, and it apparently does not work that way. Asides from that, Morrigan with Disruptor is pretty good, and Magneto corner carrying on every combo meant that I could TAC into her infinite. Managed to get at least 3 reps every time over the weekend, today I wasn’t playing very well and got like 1 lol. Think I’m gunna go ahead and start trying Vergil/Morrigan/Doom.
Okay, so I’m pretty well versed at Taskmaster/X/Doom and Taskmaster/X/Akuma. So I’ve been trying to “cheapify” my team and make it better, so how does Morrigan work as a second slot with Task/Morrigan/Doom? Or Morrigan/Task/Doom, is that what you guys think is the better order? I really love Task point but that’s with Akuma assist because shielf skills + tatsu at start of the round is obnoxiously good. Obviously the Morridoom shell is pretty oppressive, and Taskmaster with missiles is pretty good lockdown/zoning and good for creating fuzzy guard stuff. Morrigan to build meter with her assist would be nice too (though I’m not sure, do any of her assists benefit Task more for extending for sharp sting pickups that would balance out the meter assist anyways?)

Anybody play this team that’s familiar with the ins and outs of how Morrigan can be benefited by Taskmaster (like any interesting assist properties that she can use with any type of Task arrows), or any tricky setups of DHC setups from Task to Morrigan?

I’d like to try her, though my execution isn’t THAT crispy. My Task is pretty solid and my Doom is fine, so I assume I could get by for a little while even if my soul fist patterns aren’t quite solid. I just wanna know some basics (even the right order of soul fist directions to throw with the fly patterns and calling the assist for instance).

I like both orders, I think what order you would run it in would be dependent on your confidence on each one as a point character, like if you like Morrigan on point against Magneto more than Task or something. If you were to run Task first, you would have access to Morrigan’s Shadowblade assist (potential combo extender, invincible CC) or Dark Harmonizer (lots of meter), a battery to build meter for Morrigan/take out a chunk of the other team to make chipping easier for her, and her corner TAC infinite. If you run Morrigan first you get the Horizontal Arrows so her rushdown is a lot better, and you get a powerful DHC.

As for basics, fly/unfly is super important. It’s the basis of everything you do with this character pretty much. The basic pattern is Soul Fist L xx fly xx Soul Fist H xx unfly. If you decide to stick with her for long enough, you’ll begin to notice that eventually you’re not doing any pattern and you’re instead adjusting to where your opponent is, but jumpin’ around and dashing while trying to maintain consistency can be hard if you’re just starting out. Good luck!
Anyone know a magneto combo to morrigan dhc that does a mil?

Asked this in magneto section but got no answer

From my experience, Magneto’s combo damage seems to cap inside the 700K range, which DHCing into Finishing Shower should only get you to around 800-900K. Since Magneto can combo to the corner with any combo, you might as well TAC and go for the infinite. Each rep of the infinite does around 55K-60K, so if you do a full magneto combo before you TAC (which I assume is around 500-550K) you could land 10+ reps to kill a one mil. health character. I learned the infinite about 4-5 days ago, and so far I’ve managed I’ve only managed to kill a full health Dormammu once with the TAC infinite after a combo with Magneto. Usually I’ve chipped the opponent for some health so I never have to go through so many reps. I think since you have a lot of experience with Morrigan you should learn the TAC infinite.

Does anyone have extensive experience with Morrigan +Jam Session? Due to the way I play, and the growing ineffectiveness of missiles on skilled players, I am teetering on the edge of picking up Dante. I’m a little apprehensive because I’m not very comfortable playing Dante lol.
How do these teams sound?

Morrigan/Dormammu/Doom
Morrigan/Magneto/Doom
Morrigan/Doom/Phoenix
Morrigan/Doom/Akuma

Is there any good tech or tricks or good tod combos with any of them? I was going with Vergil for the pushback and tod dhc’s but Ive since decided to use him in a different team(and I dont want to be running him on several teams) so Im trying to find a suitable replacement, namely someone who can offer a good neutral assist to help Morrigan control space and do her thing but also help her put in the hurt when catching the opponent in a combo
Good - This team is a little closer to two strong shells than a team. None of these characters can wavedash so you may have trouble getting away from rushdown to setup but once you do it’s very strong. Morrigan and Dorm share some bad matchups though.
Good - Magneto really makes the morrigan/doom team well rounded. If you’re having trouble getting away with morrigan, you can start magneto instead. Once you have some space you can shockwave to AV and you’re set. Mag/doom by itself is still very strong as well.
Bad - Morrigan/Doom needs meter too badly to work well with phoenix.
Good - This team is most centered on supporting morrigan. I believe this is the team chris g has won the most majors with so it’s obviously pretty strong.

Hidden missles are your good neutral assist that help morrigan control space and extend combos. TOD combos with morrigan are either DHC to vergil or TAC to an infinite or long tac.

As far as random tech goes, you can use magneto’s hypergrav assist to combo off of soul drain like so:
j.S,s.L,M,f.M(call magneto), qcf S, dp L, qcb S, j.H, qcf H, qcb S, jump forward MMH, qcf H, qcb S, Air Dash Down, j.H, qcf M, qcb S, s.S (call missles assist), j.H, dp M, qcb S, j.S, qcf S, qcb S, j.H, dp H, missle shower

Some solid other choices for this shell:
Vergil is obviously very strong on this as he is anywhere
Strider anchor of course
Ammy because of doom/ammy.
Taskmaster works pretty well with missles, and his projectile assist is ok for morrigan and good for doom.

Theory choices:
Arthur is a character I’ve been trying on this lately and it seems to work. A lot of people burn their xfactor to kill morrigan or doom so they won’t have it to prevent arthur’s chip.
Felicia anchor if you want to try the JJJ style but with missles. I haven’t seen anyone try this but it seems like it would work.
Strange could work. He works pretty well with doom, and the bolts are a very useful assist for zoning or rushdown.
Dante. Jam session is pretty useful for morrigan but it in a different way than missles so it’s nice to have both.
Trish. She uses meter assist and missles very well.
Yeah, you’re completely right about Phoenix, honestly don’t even know what made me think that would work. -_-;
I’m mostly leaning towards Dormammu, but yeah, while both Morrigan and Dormy work well with Doom I’m not sure about how much synergy they have together, mostly planning to go with liberation, uncharged it can be a quick ghetto gtfo assist and charged it can supplement her zoning, and stalking flare into AV can make for a safe dhc to pin them down for chip, but Im concerned about matchups and damage output, not really know enough about Dormy to know if he has any dbc combos into that can guarantee the kill
Trish sounds like a pretty interesting option that I hadnt considered too though, RH into AV can provide a similar safe dhc for Morrigan and lock them down for chip, and I know she loves missiles, not sure how much she gets out of DH or any of Morrigan’s other assists and vice versa though, that and the times Ive tried to use her Ive always had the hardest time, her combos just feel… weird. Plus not sure about damage output either.
In all honesty Akuma and Magneto might be better options altogether, but I’d like to see if Trish or Dormy can work before resorting to them.
I dont think morrigan/doom/phoenix is a bad team.

Morrigan has combos that build a bar and then steal another half bar with a soul drain or two. Throw in a couple soul drains in the neutral game and learn how to rushdown with her and you’ll get 5 bars relatively easy. Morrigan doesnt need astral as long as you rushdown. You could also probably do some stalling tactics with Doom+call harmonizer in some situations/matchups.

The team will have bad matchups and isnt as good as mag/doom/phoenix but its still good.

Pretty much optimised morridoom teams are Magneto/Morrigan/Doom, Morrigan/Vergil/Doom and Zero, Morrigan, Doom. 4th team goes to Morrigan/Doom/Strider.
Well it may just be me, but I don’t see Morrigan working properly while being conservative with meter, specially running her on point since you wouldn’t get to gain extra meter from her assist, and if you run her second you give up having an assist to help her neutral game/space control. I suppose if someone was really dead set on running them together it might work, but personally I don’t feel it’s a good team, not for me at least.
I considered Zero/Morrigan/Doom, but I dont like Zero without Jam and don’t like Morrigan without HM, and I was going with the ChrisG but I wanted to try Vergil on a different team and don’t feel like running him on every single team, good as he may be, which is why Im looking for a replacement now. Which from my original list only leaves Mags/Morrigan/Doom for optimized teams I suppose, as I’m not really big on Strider either.
I’d much prefer Dormammu, Trish or even Akuma over Mags though, arguably even Vergil in case no one else could fill his role(damage output+good neutral assist) of course that would mean needing to find someone esle for my Nova team so I’d prefer to avoid it its at all possible to do without gimping my Morrigan team.
AV zoning is harder to deal with than rushdown morrigan with no AV or zoning without AV. Phoenix forces morrigan+doom to play a less effective style than what they are capable of. It restricts the shell instead of giving it new options in exchange for a busted anchor. If you want a stupid anchor, you can pick strider or vergil and still be able to spend meter and get useful assists. I guess it’s not the worst team ever, but there are way better choices for a morrigan+doom team.
What do you guys think of Morrigan/Strange/Ammy?
Sounds like a really good rushdown centric team. Bolts covers for a long enough time for Morrigan to come in, and a lot of people instinctively crouch under bolts, giving you a free overhead hit. Cold Star gives you meter drain combos and some nice lockdown for chip and whatnot, but if you don’t like the Cold Star combos you could always have Strange on Eye of Agamotto and do those ones.
Brilliant! Seems like a pretty strong team.

I’ve seen the Soul Drain loops with EoA, but not with Cold Star.
Would you mind directing me to any videos of it being done?

Unfortunately I am the only Morrigan/Doom/Ammy in existence, and I have no recording equipment. But the notations are:

With Ammy and Doom (midscreen and corner): s.LM c.H [f.H and Cold

Missiles s.S j.MHS (missiles hit) Soul Drain

Just omit the Hidden Missiles part. The combo won’t work on very large characters though, like Sentinel. There are more Soul Drain combos and setups in the Soul Drain thread:)
