I’m super excited for this game, but it really doesn’t feel like a marvel game to me. It lacks assists which is the first thing that comes to my mind when I think of a Marvel game. But I’d like to hear what you guys think about what makes this game still feel like a Marvel game besides its title. What game mechanics define a Marvel game to you?
Just finished Breath of Fire, now I’ll play Breath of Fire 2, so I can be satisfied by any BOF rep they decide to add.
Some characters might play differently just because of lack of assists. But they are getting new moves, like IM’s repulsor blade, and that shield parry Cap did.
The rest of your post I agree with, but this is wrong. The details matter a lot, and are also a big part of the marketing strategy you speak of. How different would things would be if we never saw any tags or dhcs in any of the trailers? Then think of how things would be if there was a full stage demo…Capcom needs to manage public opinion with a reveal as it’s effectively the first impression people will have of the game. How complete and informed that impression is will play a big part in how people will maintain interest throughout development. Even keeping in mind that things often change from the original reveal, seeing where the developer’s heads are at during that initial reveal period will determine how much confidence the public will have in the success of the project. Though it may seem that we will complain about too little info no matter what, there is a reasonable amount developers can give at reveal to set minds at ease. Capcom just annouced their game too early, so they knew they didn’t have enough to accomplish this.
This still doesn’t address why it needs to have the same amount of info as so-and-so game. You seem to be assuming that every single game needs the exact same amount of information released at a set point in time. This isn’t the case, as it changes on a case to case, game to game basis. Just the fact that a new Marvel vs. Capcom game is being made is a pretty powerful announcement in itself and will suffice for most average gamers (and that’s on top of all the other bits of info we got). The announcement of a second Injustice game on the other hand doesn’t have the same impact.
While that is true, Injustice sold a shit ton because of casual players. I think Marvel wants some of those sales. If they have a good amount of content besides the core gameplay, I’d say it has a chance. They already have a campaign, they just need arcade & maybe one or two other modes.
I think Heroes vs Heralds should comeback in some form (probably with a new name). That game mode had a ton of potential, but I never really played it since there was no lobbies to play with friends. That seems like the type of mode you want to fuck around with friends in.
They could even go full “modern gaming way to keep you hooked” & have loot boxes with skins, alt colors & cards in them.
I love single player content, and for me they just need to put arcade mode, trials, that cinetatic story they said, and some good tutorials. I’m all in for a HvH mode and drops and stuff.
They could even do a “Marvel Pro Tour” option, where they would put results, upcoming events and maybe some matches. Imagine a casual watching it by curiosity, and getting interested, now knowing what he should be learning. If he just goes “fuck that shit” he would still have a game filled with single player content to play.
