I’m not having these terrible problems some of you seem to be describing. Having trouble getting into matches, but my actual matches aren[t too bad really.
So much easier to make than 2d games. Especially smooth looking frames. I doubt anyone at Capcom is even versed really a 2d animator at this point in time. Or if they are they work on Megaman and there are like 2 guys…
That and it’s flashy.
Rollback is hilarious. I play on 0 frames input delay and if I play against someone above like 50-60 ping I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had to finish out the round with a giant KO on my screen.
I don’t have problems joining games if I turn on fight request in arcade or training. I set it to any, English, any, and I get one crazy fast.
I’ve noticed that playing on Danger Room helps get rid of lag sometimes.
Going back to SSBM rules, Final Destination only!
Rollback netcode is very difficult to do in 3D games with complex animation systems; such as a fighting game. There’s a hell of a lot more processing overhead, and rollback can cause more than just a bit of skipping - bizarre errors in collision detection and animation.
Nobody’s saying it’s impossible, but it also isn’t a matter of Capcom “lbeing too stoopid to push the GGPO button.”
As for “why don’t they just make all their games 2D!” - this is a merry go round that never seems to end. HD 2D = enourmous time and complexity to create at Capcom standards of animation. Guilty Gear-ish animation is very limited, and KoF12/13 isn’t even HD, and also uses rotoscopped sprites drawn over 3D models (LOL!) to save time.
i think it’s a side effect of the popularity of online play. i think as time passes you’ll have more and more people who can’t recognize input delay due to a lack of experience. is it any wonder many claim SF4/SSF4 online is great. ironically, such claims actually hurts their chances for FG companies to make an effort to improve the netcode. so, unless capcom makes online improvement a major priority from day one. i wouldn’t expect much from SFxT either.
I find the netcode to be about equal to SSF4 for me. I have really good connection with people who live near me. I’ve had my fair share of games with stupid input lag though.
People advocating for rollback netcode also know it’s not trivial. The issue is that they should plan for this from the start. Code the game so that it’s optimized to redraw a scene based on network state information as efficiently as possible. Every online multiplayer game is designed for this from the get-go, because they know that the online is the most important experience for most multiplayer games now. But every Japanese-made FG still seems to be made like it’s gonna be sitting in an arcade in 1996, then they slap their input-lag-based netcode on it because it’s “good enough.”
But you don’t even have to look at the netcode to see Japanese online efforts are half-assed. Just look at matchmaking. There are few if any other big-time games where you can look at their matchmaking/lobby system and say “this is really bad.” Conversely, there are few if any big-time Japanese FGs where you can look at their matchmaking/lobby system and say “this is good.”
Online is the standard now. They still aren’t following it.
seriously. marvel 2 had rollback lag which i prefer. I would rather have the game freeze for a second or slow down but have my combos come out rather than it running smoothly but taking a split second more to register my move.
Of course the game is not freezing or slowing down on me, but thats not what lag is. Its my input delay and I consider that lag.
I cant find a match and when I do its laggy as hellllllll. whine whine whine. please patch this (i dont know shit but theres gotta be something they can do so i can find matches without going into arcade and turning fight request on, right? RIGHT?! Man I hope so)
I haven’t even been able to get on a Ranked Match all morning… I’ve only got to play around 10 matches so far since I picked up the game (midnight release) and it seems like I’ll go 15 minutes with “Lost connection to host” or “Can’t connect to host”… I opened up all my ports and my internets pretty damn fast so I know that it’s not on my side…
Also about half the matches I’ve played I didn’t notice any lag except 2-3 where it was really noticable…
If the lag is really that bad then maybe the best way to deal with it is to not rely on the in-game matchmaking and instead focus on building a friends list with people who you have good connections with. The Xbox Live / PSN forums don?t seem like they?re being extensively used though? maybe we should get a matchmaking forum specifically for MVC3?
Edit: I guess the Marvel vs Capcom matchmaking forum sort of serves this purpose, but its kind of a ghost town.
Maybe it should be linked as a subforum as part of the MVC3 forums so more people use it?
That and the fact that games with input delay based netcode still plays well in Japan and bordering Asian countries only further ensure that we won’t see any improvements to the netcode from Capcom Japan. As of now it’s too easy for the company to ignore the issue and convince themselves that nothing’s wrong. After all if none of the people in their own country is complaining then what’s the problem? Couple this with the fact that, as you mention, the majority (i.e. the newer players) can’t even notice that they’re lagging only makes it more difficult that we’ll see any improvements to the netcode. (It won’t come from Capcom Japan that’s for sure.)

Custom match works for me
Is the netcode bad?
Alot of people say thay the netcode is awful.
i know this doesn’t have to do w/netcode … but how the hell did they not include a spectator mode for lobby mode? what the hell is up with that crap? instead we get to watch 2 licenses just bounce around with the words fight.
net code sucks. i barely get into any games. and when i do they lag. no problems with super or black ops
I have had maybe 3 laggy games out of my 170 played games.

Custom match
Played a couple matches online. A few were laggy and made me lose, the rest was ok.
Capcom just needs to get ArcSys online team in on MvC3 because BlazBlue has the best netcode for an FG ever outside of GGPO.
I think Capcom has made themselves pretty clear. People still aren’t getting it, though. Rollback netcode in a FG would require them to scale back the graphics/amount of stuff on the screen. Anyone who denies that is deluding themselves. Capcom isn’t willing to do that, when casual players put so much stock in how a game looks. Let’s face it, we here at SRK are the minority when it comes to buying their games. So, we’ll get shitty netcode on their full production games, and rollback netcode on their rereleases like HDR, MvC2, and 3s Online.
