Music Producers Thread v 3.0

I’m sure this has been asked, but is there any good cheap/freeware program that will let you make some trance stuff? I’m talking good string sounds and whatnot. I have an old dx7ii for a midi controller.

good string sounds can be found via any number of free VSTs and/or sample sets. for a free pattern based sequencer, try LMMS.

Okay, one last time. Laptop or PC?

I was gonna go with PC cuz it’s cheaper and I can build my own, but laptops are portable.

Any suggestions?

I don’t understand the question. You obviously know the factors, since you just named them…how are we supposed to decide which you want?

That depends on what kinda studio you want
if you gonna have a project studio at home and bring in your friends, its better to have a pc thats just for that
backup is a huge deal on recording

Now, a portable studio with a laptop is nice, but I would only recommend that if you’re onto live sound recording which by the way needs a whole different software.

Now, if you wanna have a portable studio to get all your stuff to your friend’s house and record them etc etc
dont do that

Remember this is not the 70s no more, this time around us producers make the artists, they dont make us, so make them lazy ass muthafuckas show to your place, that way you can set up the acoustics of your own place to make a better recording.
It took me some time, but I was able to put a bass trap on my room

oh yeah and I just came in here to show off Im playing with this baby everyday :lovin:

I’m having problems with my tracks, when I DJ, and I turn up the pitch on one of my productions, it seems to stutter or crunch up a bit, anyone know why?

what is your setup??

wsup… i make beats with fl8 usually… im learning reason 4 a lil more too… i want to learn protools next tho

i guess id be the minority in here cause im female.

Build a real small PC…like a shuttle…and your set. If you want to do it real big, add an LCD with protective cover - integrated into the case.

Whaddup fam.

I’ve lurked SRK for a while now, but just started posting recently.

Anyway, I have a plethora of beats at soundclick.com/illestrate.

I’ll be checking music from other people on this site in the meanwhile!

man do i miss magesy.com they used to have the sickest vsts and plugins on there
are there any other sites out there like that? i havent come across any since

Hey man, when to your site and hear ya beats. Sound good homie…What part of Raleigh are you in?

Thanks for checkin’ out the music.

I’m in the southwestern part of Raleigh around little towns like Apex, Cary, Fuquay-Varina etc.

Oh snap, didn’t know there was a thread dedicated to this on here.

ROLL CALL!

What gear/software are you guys on? Just curious what folks are working with:

@home -

Audio Interface - E-MU 1820m
MIDI Controller - Piece of shit… grr, really need a new one… thinking of an MPK49. Currently have a FATAR SL-990 but it lacks a lot of MIDI functionality I’d like. No sliders, knobs… hell my version doesn’t even have a pitch or mod wheel. Pretty ghetto…
Mic - AT 2020
Etc - Guitar = Epiphone Les Paul Classic
Software - Sonar 7 and Reason 4

@ work I also have access to some more gear, including a , a nice mic, and assorted other goodies.

Things I need:

Monitors for my house - any suggestions? I mostly make hip-hop, and I don’t want to drop more than $1k (Canadian :P) for the pair.
A synth? I’m thinking of getting one, either a rack mount/module or with keyboard, don’t really care. Anybody here have one they’ve worked with and loved?

I think I posted pictures of my setup a while back, but not in this thread:

Running FL 9 Fruity Editon (so I’m forced to use the pattern play list style)
Torq LE which came with X-Session Pro
My computer 1.73Ghz-Processor 1.GB-Ram Windows Vista 32-bit.

I’m gonna post pictures of my set up, now which is totally a not as good as it was when I was living in a house

LOL before I saw the optimus or the dual screens…I saw the two Dreamcast LOL…

My setup is in seperate pieces due to some other business Iv’e been working on sitting in my keyboard controlelr area, not worth a pick, but I’m rocking dual 22"s, B1 Condensor mic ->personus bluetube -> Tascam-410 or whatever -> Sonar 9 + reason 4.0 with radium 61 + an old keyboard I dont’ really use heh. I’ve got a generic yamaha acoustic and a bunch of records…but no record player still. I foudn one on friday and decided to not get it, changed my mind, came back money and it was gone

And for the record, ya’ll dude got cake, I couldn’t evne afford all those guitars & a Roland drumset. I almost bought one once, still get tempted too, but nah…just too much money. Specialy the one I want (I forge the model number, but it has outputs for each pad that I can feed into my computer for adjustments on a pad basis.

I use FL Studio 8 and Reason 3.0. I mostly use Reason for its synths and ease of use with my Korg Kontrol 49 midi controller which I love to death, FL Studio for everything else. And I’ve got an Mbox 2 Mini and ST55 mic for when I feel up to recording vocals.

Oh yeah, with regards to software, my DAWs of choice are Reaper 3, FL Studio 9, and EnergyXT 2.5.

lol not to seem like a dick Unreally, but how do you have Sonar 9 when it isn’t out yet? You mean 8.5?

lol…

I think I might go pick up that MPK today, come to think of it. I can’t stand this monster I’ve got right now. It’d be great if I was trying to be a piano player, since it’s a full 88 keys with fully weighted action, but the lack of extra features is… bleh.
