Music Producers Thread v 3.0

Got my new mixer (Numark DXM06) and a laptop stand for my coffin. Mixer feels right at home with me, even though I went to GC earlier in the day and was messing with the Rane mixer…only if I had 2 G’s

anybody has the native instruments expensions of the net?

Can anyone explain the difference between a keyboard and a MIDI controller, they look so similar. Do MIDI controllers have no stock sounds or something?

most keyboards double as midi controllers.

they control midi notes. midi is basically a unsiversal “language” that records time, velocity, note length etc.

whatever your host program is applies whatever sound you have assigned to that midi pattern.

and no, most “midi controllers” do not come with stock sounds, they are simply a controller (like a video game controller) to control whatever sounds you use in your host.

The post above mine explains it pretty well, but simply put no, MIDI controllers do not contain stock sounds. Most likely you’re using it to play the soft-synths or VSTs you have in your computer, but you can connect the MIDI controller to a sound module or any other keyboard for the most part and play sounds from that.

Anyways, had no idea about this thread until now. Didn’t know SRK was so into beats.
I’ve worked in the Hip-Hop/R&B/Pop genre for a little while now, feel free to add my myspace page at: www.myspace.com/luckyboybeats

exactly. that’s why it’s a controller keyboard. It controls some other midi device, as opposed to having its own sounds.

we should have beat battles

You guys are on point. But there’s another, completely different common misconception I want to clear up cause It’s bound to come up sooner or later:

MIDI is not sound. It doesn’t produce sound in any way. It is just data that tells a computer where and when to put the notes (sounds) that a synthesizer produces. Using MIDI, you can use the exact same song file to produce an infinite variety of re-mixes by simply substituting different processors for the MIDI input. For example, you can stream your MIDI through a synthesized electric guitar and if you don’t like it, you can delete the guitar and drop a saxophone onto the MIDI channel and voila! It sounds like a saxophone. Or, you can put some sort of neat effects plugin on that channel and let it create weird effects according to the MIDI data that is coming in. It’s a really flexible data source, MIDI. And you’d be surprised how many people don’t really understand it. Seriously, how many times have you heard someone say “Man, MIDI sounds like Nintendo music!” Little do they know, their favorite hot 100 track probably started off as a MIDI file.

Harmony-central has a really good guide which is the same one that I used to learn MIDI.

I’m going to try to post up the stuff I had problems learning when I started producing because it took me months to learn the basics like MIDI (I had an idea what it was, but nothing beyond the real basics.), what an audio interface is, what a MIDI controller was, VSTs and plugin-ins in general, sequencers, samplers, etc. It’s all very confusing at first, so if any of you have any question ask away and I’ll do my best to help.

I’mma need help on all of that, but I’ll try to read that guide first.

finally added some shyt:

Love Locked down stems I hope this isn’t a repost

I started randomly messing around Mon night, put up the track before heading to work.

check my page, i’m a producer that’s about to drop an album. mid 90s sounding boom bap hip hop tracks. word.

I like that The Fish track.

I’ve been thinking about doing some early 90s Tribe/The Ummah like beats for a while, but I don’t think I can get that warm sound without some hardware.

Is there anyone that doesn’t do the mean bop and hand conductor thing when making a beat?

Myspace is acting up for some reason, uploaded to imeem

just gotta give a shout out to the mda vst collection. free and quality, it’s been sitting in sequencer for some time and i just popped it out to experiment and wow, too good.

^ Thanks for the head up on that. I love some free plug-ins.

Check out http://www.tweakbench.com They have some good plug-ins that I’ve used, although someone’s probably linked that before in this thread.

Is anyone into chiptunes? I’ve downloaded a few programs and there’s nothing “noob friendly” showing how to actually use them. I got sound out of skale, but it was midi.
My goal is to make a 8-bit track with a modern drumline instead of sampling and chopping game music (which is still fun).

I’m digging that. I’d like to do some of that myself.

Need help making a finacial move.

I’ve finally succumbed to pressure and wil lstart digging thru the crates, even if I recreate the loops its a goldmine of ideas. I’ve found TONS AND TONS of vinyl at great prices (25 cents each 0_o) but I don’t have a record player. Craig’s List has been a complete wash on them.

So I’m figuring I’m going to just buy one straight up. Iv’e done well with my money so in a couple weeks I’ll be able to throw whatever I want at one, but I don’t want to be stupid about it. So there are three types of record players I’m looking at and frnakly can’t figure out which way to invest…keep in mind, I’m a complete n00b with vinyl.

Option 1 - One of the cheapest but reliable units I can scoop from Guitar Center, something in the 70-100 buck range. Won’t have much in the way of option, but wil lreliably get the job done. Cheapest Option

Option 2 - USB record player. Similar to the above, but IU can ‘easily’ record all my vinyl to MP3 and sort thru them, listening to samples at work. This will give me the most time to multi task, allowing me to even listen to shit while driving and pick out samples I hear, however, I doubt I’ll much in the way of pitch/speed control, and I frankly don’t know how good they are. As well I won’t be able to do any scratching which eludes me to 3

Option 3 - spend 2-300 bux and get a really solid record player that will allow me to scratch to my hearts content as well as give me uber flexibility for playing the samples.

I’ve been marinating on all three options for over a month and a half now with no resolution, so I’m comiung here humbly looking for some ideas on it or at least arrows to help me decide.
