kof games take a lot more skill then most fighting games, noobs have a hard learning large combos, very fast rush down game, trying to learn fast grapplers, you also play as 3 different characters which also can be difficult.
VF4 Evo hands down.
After that:
ST
Marvel
GG
Kof 98
Kof 2k2
I think this thread would have better results if the OP defined what he considers skill. Knowledge of a game? Execution? What?
ok, in no order in particular
vf, gg, jojo, darkstalkers3, mvc2, hnk specially if you main jagi, sf2
i would take as skill the mix of execution, matchup knowledege, mindgames and general strategies in the game
3S, Garou, and KOF 98 & 2K2.
Arcana Heart
I learned how to play VF, GGAC and the rest of the fighters easily, but Arcana Heart is still the most difficult fighter to master, especially on how hard it is to time a foward air dash during a combo, GG and HnK makes it so easy, but AH you gotta find a proper method.
VF4/Evo/5 is so heavily skill based, that it needs a full blown training mode to help people out with how to play it. Not like that’s a bad thing, mind you.
You sound like someone who has never taken it serious. Obviously, your opinion is invalid because of that. That game has one of the deepest meta games there is, there’s no need to be a smug douche. Hmm, neg repped for stating an opinion, interesting how that works.
The day VF4 Evo console dropped is the day the standard for fighting game training modes was set.
That game taught you EVERYTHING you needed to know about the game from the easy to highest level techniques and walked you through them in multiple scenarios. That combined with the game’s actually good AI made you at least a mid-level player from playing just the cpu. Also the packed in replay of high level players doing exhibition matches was a freat idea. That was the best console release of any fighting game imo.
I suppose make your own interpretation of what I meant by skill. It’s really up to you.
Execution wise…
MVC2
GGAC
VF
SOME Arcana stuff, like Time Loops in AH1.
lol. smash.
1)VF4:evo
2)Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure
3)GG:AC
VF.
Guilty Gear is second IMO.
Okay. OP I’m gonna break it down like this. Technical then Mindgames then Fundamentals. From there I will list the 5 games I believe for a “FACT” have the most skill involved not to lose because I’m tired of stating opinions. 10 for each up until the last list which will be top 5.
Technical Skill: Marvel is “The” most technical fighter to me. At this present time.
1-Marvel :High level players will straight out beat noobs. No if ands or buts.
Just to do well even with top tier teams takes an insane amounts of practice of resets, infinites, setups, unflys, and hell even cheesing opponents takes practice. Mags alone can wipe someone out if the player is tech savvy enough.
2-CvS2: Don’t need to explain on the cool : ). Shit is hardcore at high levels. RC’in, Links, heavy knowledge of the combos, using a groove to it’s full potential whether it be C, A, or K, and knowledge of a character in and out.
3-Guilty Gear: FRC, and among other things just add more depth to the frantic pressure based style of it. Definitely a technical mans game.
4-Virtua Fighter: Been explanined the whole entire thread. Extremely technical.
5-Super Turbo: It takes a very long time just getting decent at the game. One mistake on your part is gg.
6-3rd Strike
7-Garou
8-Samurai Showdown
9-SF4: Some of the Viper combos as well as one frame links from other characters I’ve seen are 0.0. So yeah SF4 is somewhat tech. Don’t necessarily need it but still some muscle memory required I guess.
10-KOF
Mindgames: Vampire wins this easy.
1-Vampire Savior: This game is too damn quick, and relentless for you to rest your hands even for a second. Offensive oriented to the max keeps you on your toes. You can lose a match in this game faster than you can in Super Turbo. IAD overheads, pursuits, and tech chasing.
Reason why below because I’m sure there is a match faster than this:

2-Virtua Fighter
3-Super Turbo
4-KOF: I’ve seen how China, Mexico, and Korea plays KOF it ain’t a joke at their level of play. Ultimo mindgames 24/7. Every character can be godly if given the incentive even with it’s humongous roster.
5-Hokuto No Ken-Instant Kill system is a mindscrew. Once you see you have no stars you get nervous, and the meaning don’t get hit becomes main priority.
6-MvC2
7-Melty Blood
8-3S
9-CvS2
10-Alpha 2/3
Good Fundamentals: SFII namely ST is the the great grandpa of fundamentals.
1-Super Turbo: Took the basics of the fighting genre and amplified it to what you see today.
2-Virtua Fighter: It is the 3d fighter that pushed Tekken and other 3d fighters into the limelight.
3-KOF
4-Samurai Showdown
5-Vampire
6-Tekken
7-Marvel
8-CvS2
9-Rival Schools/Proj. Justice-Actually good game for people who are not even that good at fighters. Very simple, and easy to pick up.
10-Soul Calibur-Also another good game for noobies at fighters.
Mind you I kinda just mashed some games due to lazinness -_- in some of those off the top of the dome but it’s close to how I feel about it. In a nutshell:
#1-Super Turbo: I like HF better myself but ST is where all of those things above counts. You need to be technical, play smart/on point with everythng you do, and have to go beyond basics.
#2-Virtua Fighter: This game to me is even with ST in balancing the essentials. ST however beats it when comes to the fundamentals.
#3-Marvel: A few games beat it in the last two categories. But when it comes to being a dexterity fiend, and sitting down to actually learn the game. Marvel is king hands down.
#4-KOF: KOF has everything it needs to be a tournament worthy fighter. If one thing is good about it that it does better than the other 5 in this list is staying true to the roots with every installment.
#5-Vampire: CvS2 made it to every category but Vampire was still #1 when it came to the top of the metagame. It is the most entertaining fighter to watch to me of all the fighters I’ve ever played. There is nothing like two good ass players really showing off what the game is capable of at tourney level.
^^^Wow, great list, thanks for compiling all that. Interesting read.
Major Props G.O.T. Good analysis
Amen, I agree.
VF no doubt. if SFIIITS didnt have chun id say that as a close second. having a character that easy at the top just sucks. even a sucky chun can fuck up some of the best goukis out there. its juts not fair.
Um, with my biased opinion I’d say…
Marvel
Third strike
Guilty Gear
ST
No real order, though.
