Mission mode of Guilty Gear XX Reload: Midnight Carnival, the challenges forced you to do some outrageous shit for new storylines and some artwork to die for but unless you were some kind of professional player or new how to perfectly exploit the cpu 9 times out of 10 you were never going to see it.
Haha, so true.
FF6: both the rats in the opera house and the mine cart part are hellish in a low level game. i actually quit when i got to the mine carts…
Are you thinking of something from an Alfheim Challenge, or our friends Grace & Glory, and Gracious/Glorious? G&G can be hit anytime you want…except with the bullets; I’ve noticed they seem to block that. I’ve always fought them with Shuraba(heh, that’s my main Weapon of Choice anyway), and that will hit them without Witch Time being necessary. I’ve also found that blocking with the Moon accessory is absolutely The Shit when it comes to dealing with those guys. Slash, slash, slash get ready to block…there’s the hit! BLOCKED slash, slash slash, etc. heh, fighting them is such fun to me. Even though I’ve gained the upperhand lately since I can consistently block the hits, it’s still a thrilling battle each time.
Speaking of particular enemies though…this reminds me:
-The Pouilly Slime from Phantasy Star Online. <–Garbage. This is one of the most annoying regular enemies I’ve ever dealt with in a game. For those that are unfamiliar, here’s the rundown: They show up as a puddle of slime. They cannot hurt you while in this form, but you also can’t hurt them. They eventually morph up into an oddly shaped creature that tries to hit you one time, either with a slash or a spit-projectile. They will only do this one time, then they fall back into puddle form. If you didn’t attack…woops, now you have to wait as it slides around the floor for awhile, completely invincible to everything…you have to wait for it to morph and attack again. If you do attack, it’s the same deal; Pouilly becomes a puddle again, so you STILL have to wait for awhile before you can hit the damn thing a second time.
Oho but that’s not all. See, that would only be mildly annoying, imo. The projectile or whatever weird little non-melee attack they do…it can spawn another Pouilly Slime! So, 1 Pouilly can spawn a room full of them…which will obviously take a long as time to kill because of how the combat scenario involving them plays out. But wait, there’s more! Certain attacks can also split the Pouilly into extra Slimes…so this is yet another way it can multiply. I think heavy sword attacks were one factor, and magic can split the slimes as well. Fortunately, I think there’s a random aspect of how/why that happens…so it’s not going on all the time.
My solution: Cheap shit. I remember the days of hacked “1304” MAGs that were way more powerful than what the game normally allows. Yeah, I had a few of those…usually, I’d pull out the hacked mag or some godlike weapon to make sure the thing is killed in 1 hit. Cheapness saves the day. Man, to think there were actually people who purposely split the Pouillys in hopes of finding the rare Red Slime to get whatever rare item/weapon it occasionally drops…crazy. I don’t see how even the hardcore PSO fans put up with that.
Haha, you should see the rants i made about majora’s mask in the “currently playing” thread…It’s a couple of pages back, and it goes on for a few posts. I will defend that game to the grave.
Pandora’s Temple in God of War. There has never been a more long, drawn out, and outright frustrating ‘level’ than that.
I can’t believe how many people here actually liked Nero from DMC:4, I thought he sucked as a character and I would hate to play a game where it was just him. But I guess I’m in a serious minority here…
Got damnit!!! I DID NOT think of that shit at all. I don’t know why I didn’t think of that. Probably because the shit just pissed me off so bad I stopped trying.
BTW, and I don’t even know if this counts but…if anyone here has actually tried to play Madden’s franchise mode with the salary cap on, it’s fucking impossible. The game doesn’t calculate the salary cap correctly, i.e., you ALWAYS incur a cap penalty for trying to trade players irrespective of whether there should actually be a penalty, and the game does not allow you to renegotiate contracts correctly. I spent years 4-6 of my franchise with 400,000.00 of salary cap room. I just quit. Madden really needs to fix that shit.
I second this. That was a terrible experience. Not only was the part bad, but the camera just went haywire as well for some reason.
Dude. DUDE. I’m doing that shit right now and its taking FOREVER. Ok, really its just a couple hours, but goddamn I bought this game for the epic combo of Final Fantasy and Disney, not doing painfully easy duels where you grab the most balls and run around looking for wack ass rumors. FUCK. Worst opening chapter of a very good video game EVER.
Oh…and Ikaruga = HARDEST GAME EVER!!! I have never passed level 2. I’m dead serious. The game is fucking impossible. Awesome game though.

Man co-sign on the awesomeness that is Majora’s Mask and the bullshit that is the Roxas portion of KHII.
chapter 4 on hard is fucking dumb
isn’t ikaruga all memorization or is all the bullets randomized?
It’s memorization everything fires at the same time and plac every time you play. The only thngs that change are where suicide bullets fly cause that depends on where you kill the enemy. Ikaruga’s a puzzle game at heart.
^ o ok so would that make dodonpachi the hardest shoot em up to date?
Oh I dunno I guess it depends on what your trying to do. Just beating Ikargua is kind of easy (for the genre respectivly) but netting 30 million points (The real aim of the game) is incredibly hard and takes a lot of dedication to the game.
If you mean just flat out beating the game I still think Radiant Silvergun is my hardest. Game’s an hour long and around 85% of the game is boss fights.
People as a whole though I believe think Mushihime Futari is the hardest to beat. That games bullet cutrains are incredibly dense. I don’t really like the game myself but I don’t really like Manic shmups in general.
On top of that it depends on which type of bullet hell games gives you trouble, some games focus on Pattens (Touhou for example), some games need better reaction (Raiden).
Talk about shoot em up, what was the one Capcom made called that your have a shield that can reflect bullets? The games was ok until the later stage on harder difficulties, once you get there it is just shield-bomb-shield-bomb-dodge dodge dead.
Mushihime Futari is very hard but the pattens are dodge able, the Capcom one though…wtf was that lol.
I don’t know if this is hated, but Challenge of the Gods in God of War is fucking stupid, too. Those missions are designed to be annoying and bullshit, and you can’t save to come back to it later, so you have to do the whole thing in one sitting.
EDIT: Regarding the above post, it feels to me like giving the player a shield or energy in a bullet hell shooter is a cop out on the designers’ part. In every situation in games where you don’t get a shield, it is escapable. But give the player a shield, and suddenly the onus to make it possible to always dodge is no longer there, and you can design bullshit where the player is expected to take a few hits in order to get through it. And if his energy is kind of low? Well, he’s fucked, and no amount of skill will help him. I feel like Soldner-X employs this kind of stupid design choice.
o man i know what your talking about, its on that damn ulitivision(not sure the name but sounds similar to it) arcade where you play hella classics
and im pretty sure the game your talking about is on there along with snow bros and such
now i think about it, is the game your thinking of sector z?
Giga Wing (not bad), or Mars Matrix (fuckin’ hard imo)?
yeah, i was really into kh1 and got all of the weapons and beat sephiroth and grinded to 100 and all of that stuff, so i decided to try kh2 in the summertime. started it and only played it that one day because i was seriously so bored of it.
Mars Matrix is cool but yeah it’s really fucking hard.
