Mortal Kombat Armageddon... will suck... hard

I haven’t been able to get into any of the Mortal Kombat games since Mortal Kombat:3.

EWAS, shit I remember you man. You were underalanis right? Holla at me on AIM whenever yo: VersatileRTC. I remember when was a kid you used to be raping everybody in the UMK3. You still got the flava?

Give MKA a chance man. It wont be like 2D MK but the shit will be fun. Some of yall take these fighting game mechanics too serious. A game can be glitch and broken as fuck and still a blast.

Evilmuffinman, I hear you on that shit. MKA is gonna have 63 characters, so perhaps it would be best if there was a very small concentration of low tiers(5-10) and a massive amount of top tiers along with mids who can hold their own. As long as Sub-Zero can compete I’ll find a way to win with the others if they are incapable. People said Sub was worthless in MKD till I started playing.

shinakumax, what do you want to know about exactly?

Tiers

Tiers? Pretty much all the boss characters >>> everyone else.

Despite what my friends say, I’m not getting Armageddon. At one time, I did like
MK (back when it originally came out), but as the years went by, I got more
dissatisfied with it.

-It’s too slow (IMO) as opposed to other fighters. They seem more stiff and
restricted.

-For a 3D fighter, they sure do have very little movesets. Compared to Soul
Caliber, Tekken, DoA, and Virtua Fighter, which have long ones. Although I figure
this is done to appeal to the casual gamer, who doesn’t have to practice and
memorize the majority of the list to get good.

-The other martial-art styles are shit. They look and play horribly. Weapon styles
play horribly too. Please stop trying to be Soul Caliber Midway. Please stop.

-Hara-Kiri’s were a good idea gone wrong. Some were good, the majority sucked.
Especially when more than 3 characters had the same good damn one, I’m glad
they’re getting rid of it.

-A lot of the designs are garbage. Same with the character models (don’t get me
started on how some of the female characters look).

-Some of the worst special moves ever.

-I love the fact that practically everyone has the same voice whenever they do
a move, get hit, etc. Way to be lazy Midway.

mid tier

everyone else

The thing with playing MKD competetively is that you can’t really make rules. We have no real tournaments(where we travel for money and shit), so it’s not uncommon for one to pick Kira and have to fight some lamer who uses Bo or Dairou. So basically among the “high level” community there is a non-discussed code of honor that must be followed for the game to even be playable. Thankfully most people aren’t gay about it and won’t play Bo/Dai unless it’s in a tourney or a mutal understanding before hand.

Anyway, though the game is pretty shallow, it’s not like you can pick up the game and own anyone who has a clue how to play. We have our own terminology and a pretty decent selection of quality players. Hopefully some of the SRK community will play and help us expand.

How is using the top characters considered lame? The hell, man?

I love your “high level community code of honor” thing. What could be better than making up arbitrary non-existant rules for the nadir of 3D fighting games?

You don’t quite understand. It’s not lame using top tiers. That’s fine, but normally the char is picked first(and not as a counter) or left highlighted for a while to indicate to the opponent that they will be picked. They are so broken that if that is not that way the match is near unwinnable.

I have no problem fighting a top tier character. You can’t be considered the best in any fighting game if you fear the best characters. That’s called being a scrub.

I agree, but you have to consider things like glitches and infinites when you take MKD into consideration. I don’t know in depth about them, but there is reason to be a little pissed when someone picks Dairou, Shujinko, or any annoying character. The tiers are cut like diamonds in MKD.

I hope the faster gameplay and air combos in MKA help to fix that. It can’t be done in one game, but it seems like the team is starting on the right track.

I’ve been hearing that everyone except for a few secret characters (like the boss, Blaze) is unlocked from the beginning. “Hearing” at this point means a moderator on the Midway Boards allegedly said it, and the Xbox article allegedly said it. What’s the verdict on that?

It would’ve been fine for me to go through Konquest for characters this time around. It looks fun, as opposed to MKD.

Axeman is right. In games like 3S and MVC2 infinites are allowed in serious play because they’re somewhat difficult to do and require some sort of skill. In MKD it’s a different case. Even the hardest infinite can be taught to a person with minimal fighting game ability at best.

Somebody picking Dairou or Bo Rai Cho without a mutual understanding before hand is like going to the arcade and having some asshole pick Akuma in SSF2T to ruin your win streak. They may not be as broken as Akuma was, but they’re leaps and bounds above all the other characters. For example, Liu Kang is a solid character(upper mid), but he stands absolutely no chance against a top level Bo or Dai.

As for unlocking characters in MKA,I believe Ed Boon realized that it would be stupid to have to unlock characters that you know will already be in the game. I already know Jax is going to be in it. Why do I have to play through some mode to use him?

The 4 characters that are locked from the beginning are…

SPOILERS

  1. Meat
  2. Blaze
  3. Taven(guy you play as in Konquest mode)
  4. Daegon(brother of the guy you play as in Konquest mode.

Also, in case you guys don’t know, MK will come in two versions: the standard one and a premium edition.

The premium edition is 10 extra dollars, but worth it for hardcore MK fans such as myself. I assume none of those types exists on Shoryuken, but I guess it’s worth mentioning anyway. These premium editions will come in 4 flavors(all metallic and pretty looking)…

  1. A close up picture of half of Johnny Cage’s face on the right of the box, and in the background is Goro standing in a pose.

  2. A close up picture of half of Kano’s face on the right of the box, and in the background is Sonya standing in a pose.

  3. A close up picture of half of Shao Kahn’s face on the right of the box, and in the background is Sindel standing in a pose.

  4. The regular MK Armageddon box art, but metallic.

In these premium packs will be a 60 minutes of footage including “The History of Fatalities”, 50+ character bios, an art cell including every character in the history of MK in a group picture and an arcade perfect version of Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3.

The reason why MKD cannot be taken seriously is because of how broken it is. It’s so incomplete and untested gameplay wise that there’s absolutely no way for it to gain tournament status. I don’t know how MKA is going to make things better since it’s adding more stuff. If they fixed everything that was wrong in MKD, there is still the new gameplay elements to worry about. This air combo system has me baffled because it already looks ridiculous.

Versatile, yup that’s me. I’m still messing people up in UMK3. We’re having a database problem right now at umk but when it’s back up, join the board.

… This thread’s still alive.

Ewas, UMK3 was a fairly poor tested game itself, but it’s just that everyone had such broken shit that it made it balanced. I’m not trying to compare to two games, but you must realize that most of UMK3’s brilliance was unintentional. The perfect mistake I suppose.

MKD without otgs, free throws and universal tracking would be a pretty decent game, actually.

I can just hope that it feels looser.

I guess I can kinda see where you are coming from. MKD had this weird, stiff feel to it. It didn’t feel fluid at all. I guess it’s because of the weird looking animations.

I actually preferred MKDA to MKD.

Pretty much every new character introduced in MKD sucked from pretty much every angle. Mostly, design wise - Dairou/Darrius/Kira/Hotaru…

Gameplay wise will it suck? yeah, but one thing is that the MK games are always fun. I for one will be buying this as i’ve bought every other mk game before. You just can’t go in expecting a lot from midway, just have fun with it

I really only play MK for the nostalgia and kind of mindless fun it can offer. As a fighter it is pretty much garbage though. I only play alone or with casual non fighting game fan friends.

so what your fuckin tellin me is that Mortal Kombat isn’t a bad fighting game. My bad I don’t know anyone who plays the wack ass game therefore I figured that no one was buying it!

No, man. I’m pretty sure Xero Kaiser meant that the game is selling well. And we all know that good sales don’t necessarily represent a good product.
