NOTE: The original title of this thread was “Mortal Kombat Armageddon will suck… hard…” I have since changed my mind, but that tidbit will help you understand the first 4 or 5 pages.
…but I wonder if it will suck the hardest?
For those of you unaware, Mortal Kombat: Armageddon is the newest MK game and the last one on the current gen systems. This is important.
If, for some reason, you don’t want to research the info yourself at MKO and Trmk.org, then believe that what I am about to tell you is true. You will then share my thoughts.
Armageddon is supposed to be the final Mortal Kombat… on the PS2 and XBox. The slate will be “wiped clean” in this game for future games on the PS3 and such. This game will have:
-An “improved” air combo system (I’m thinking something like MVC2 from the scan photos).
-A Konquest Mode similar to Mortal Kombat Shaolin Monks (that’s actually a plus)
-A “reinvented” fatality system. I’m assuming there’s a “create a fatality” option.
-Create-A-Character mode
-An all new Krypt
That info is lukewarm news by itself, but this is the nut-kicker here:
-Every single character who was playable in MK history will be in Armageddon.
Allegedly, all the old stages in MK history will return as well. I heard this and saw the Subway.
If my “this will suck hard” view hasn’t caught you yet, let me break it down:
MKD sucked gameplay wise when there were thirty characters. Now there’s around 60. They aren’t even changing the graphic style they’ve had as of late.
There is no doubt in my mind now that Mortal Kombat Armageddon will suck gameplay-wise.
The question is: will it suck the hardest of any of the Mortal Kombat games after the 3D transition, or will it be mildly sucky?
The developers need to realize that you don’t need dozens of characters to make an attractive fighting game. The most influential fighting game (SF2) only had 8 characters and was able to attract both casual and hardcore gamers, something that most other fighters fail to accomplish. The “dream match” games are usually fun and have the ability to rekindle interest in an otherwise dead franchise, but the balance always suffers in the process.
Oh well, this might be a fun weekend rental just for screwing around with the new combo system, but it’s almost certain to fail as a competitive (or even just competent) fighting game. Hopefully they’ll take some of the player advice on their forum and do some serious tweaking to the engine and give the game a little more depth.
The sad shit is that as a fan, I thought MK had some potential to be good if they would just get better gameplay and tweak the story.
Now with this “One MK a year” thing they have going, they might never get that ball rolling.
They’re WAY in over their heads with this one.
Yeah, they don’t seem to understand that having a bunch of bonus features and other useless shit doesn’t hide the fact that the actual game engine is lackluster at best.
You have to admit though, the Puzzle Kombat minigame was awesome, especially online. It wasn’t an exact replica of Puzzle fighter (gems/bombs don’t do damage, no diamond flip), but it was about as good as it gets next to playing the real thing. If they’re smart, they’ll include it in this version so that the game will be worth buying when it’s a Greatest Hits title
No, I’m concerned on a whole different level. I’m thinking massive glitches and stuff.
It’s like the number of characters they have is inversely proportional to the quality of the gameplay with these 3D installments. I would take MKD over MKDA anyday, but the system was a bit worse. MKD had more characters than MKDA.
Armageddon will have more stages and characters than MKDA and MKD combined. I’m expecting infinites galore and characters with the same moves. My only hope is that they at least drop that “Three styles” thing. We don’t need a move being recycled even more times than it was in MKD.
Umm I don’t think you guys realise what angle the developers are going for, the casual gaming fan, the one that wants the bonus features, the unlockables, the custom fatalities, the characters from all the old MK games.
That’s where the sales come from, and though they try and make the fighting system a bit more varied, its mostly a fun game that is designed so people can buy the game, get fairly good, do some sick looking combos and then do fatalities against their friends in between other games while they have their friends around, its not rocket science here.
That’s been pretty obvious ever since the first MK game. However, MKDA and MKD seemed to be trying to cater to the hardcore gamer, at least partially. I don’t think any of us are expecting another 3rd Strike from this game, but axeman’s concern about the glitches and clone characters is a good point, since even the most casual gamer can realize that there are half a dozen “ninja” characters that share almost identical gameplay between each other.
Yeah. Muskau, I still get some enjoyment from the MK games, but they’re unplayable compared to Tekken and the like. Somehow, though, MK has the best recognition besides Street Fighter.
Once I got keen on fighting games, I held out a hope that MK would get better with it’s gameplay, because with it’s recognition and atmosphere, it could be great while setting a bar. Something tells me that the casual audience would buy MK even if the gameplay was harder and stuff, because of the fatalities and gore.
The problem is that the fatalities, gore, and extras are all MK has going for it really, and it’ll never be good in terms of “just that damn good.” It will forever be sucky while riding the coat tails of being the first game with blood and gore.
Shaolin Monks versus mode owns MKD. If the game plays like Shaolin Monks vs mode with sixty characters than it may be worth picking up. If not, and if it keeps trying to compete with Soul Calibur and DOA then screw it.
Mortal Kombat has always really been about the content, and not the fighting/competition aspect. It can “compete” with Soul Calibur and Dead or Alive no problem though, it sells a helluva lot more copies than those two games.
I always thought MK was a fun game, but I never really saw it on a competition level, but I have seen some players out there that do play MK games at that level, and when I see them playing, I can hardly believe it’s a Mortal Kombat game anymore.
as an old school fan of mk2, this 3d stuff has bothered me. i would love to see a return to 2d - not for competitive reason, just for nostalgia. their 3d engine sucks ass tho. i could barely play mkd, so i would love to see a return to simplicity, or even a deeper 2d engine. i doubt they have the abilities to make a game that would truly appeal to the competitive gamer at this point, so why not appease the old school fans? with graphic technology these days, it would be interesting to see what they could do with the old school ‘real life’ characters…
Straight up truth. They aren’t worried about making a fantastic fighting game that can be played very competitively. Instead, they’re concerned with making something that casual gamers can mash around on and look at the blood spurting from everywhere. Then they put in all of the extras so that when the casual gamers get tired of the regular fighting game without even realizing just how shitty the engine is, they can still play the game.
I personally think that Armageddon will be more or the same, except now they’re trying to expand and attract gamers who were into Mortal Kombat previously by bringing the entire cast in.
This is horrible fucking news.
They just do not get it… they just don’t get it… im so disappointed in them right now its not even funny. I guess my friend was right
"They wont listen to gamers who look at playing the game at a pro level, they’ll look through you to the screaming kiddies wanting more blood, fatalities, and more skin in there fighting games."
jesus… this is straight up retarded. I hope they at least change the engine and possible make it play “semi” decent.
Pretty much MK hit it’s top level with MK2 and then lost it. MK2 was a great fighting game. One of the top 10 for sure. However the 3D ones have not been all that great.
It seamed like they were onto a good idea with the style branch combos with MK:DA and they said it would be improved in MK:D and while it was slightly better they still made specials all but useless. You couldn’t really link specials into a style branch very well at all and specials did not do so good as a stand alone attacks. (if you don’t count Bo Rai Cho’s Puke infinite)
I will not be holding my breath for any changes or anything spectacular in MK:A but it might be fun to fuck around with for a while.
