Footage of the last grand finals I was in. Nothing new to learn from from these matches really, apart from the fact that I use alot of ‘raw flight’ fireball patterns.
By raw flight I mean I do a fireball on the ground, flight cancel then fly manually diagonally upward and do a H fireball to predict an opponents superjump after they pushblock the first ground fireball. Manually flying diagonally up is actually pretty fast. I think more morrigans should start using more manual flight in general instead of air dashing as it makes her less predictable. Its slow yes, but you the paths you can go arent as set in stone as plink dash stuff.
I’m not really looking for new things to learn like tech, just new ways to play and expand my abilities. I feel stuck in my habits, and I absolutely hate it. I know I should be trying to punish Strider calls, but I instinctively block. I know I can’t backdash away from Strider, but sometimes I naturally try. I’m always getting grabbed since my prior training partners weren’t very good and didn’t grab much. I’ve gotten so used to just Soul Fisting my way to victory that I do SF xx fly SF xx unfly in very bad situations (Zero/Vergil is clearly under me/the Soul Fist are clearly going in a direction that won’t help me control space etc. and I’ll still do it). I need to stop rushing down with only overheads, I need to whiff j. S to go right into a low so I’m not so easy to pushblock. Basically, I want to improve my offense and become unpredictable. I still believe that I’m good with Morrigan, it’s just the skills that improve over greater amounts of time are the ones I need now, and now that I have less time to play b/c of school I get frustrated:P
I liked how you used j.M a lot, although I normally use j.H and wasn’t very interested in using j.M I like how the range of it can at least make the opponent block. You have a lot of patience too, although I feel that may have caused you to lose the MODOK matchup (I used to use the pattern of Soul Fist ADU Soul Fist, but didn’t really like how I fell down so precariously. Maybe more Soul Drain/Soul Fist xx ADDF plinks?). Something I really like about manual flight that you reminded me of is that it increases your dash speed by a lot. I’m wondering in it’s applications in setting up self crossups at lower heights, like if at the peak of a normal jump you Soul Fist L xx fly move forward ADDF crossup normal of choice. Good for punishes and getaways too, today I managed to punish a buster my friend called to punish a bad Hidden Missiles after I moved forward and then ADDF j.S. Kind of an extreme example since I had already intended on rushing down, but the fact that I was able to even do that was pretty cool. As always I like watching Morrigan’s other than ChrisG play:)
I use manual flight sometimes. With arthur last, I’ll use it just to get above jump height so he’s not visible and then call his assist for an ambiguous cross up. Aside from that I really only use it in matchups against teleporters like vergil or dante so I’m not setting myself up to get my inputs crossed up all the time.
Anyways, Oerba, I’d go a little easy on the whiffed j.S to low approach. You have to be very careful who you use it on and when because when I attempt this, usually people are mashing buttons and hit me. Your opponent should either be pinned by an assist or known to be very patient to attempt for you to that approach.
If you want something to work on, look into negating pushblock. Morrigan can negate pushblock by attacking during an assist that is being blocked, using fly, unfly, or shadow blade at the time of pushblock, or air dashing at the time of pushblock. s.H heavy cannot be pushblocked until the last hit that connects(meaning if you cancel early on the second hit you’ll be pushed after the second hit). So you can use this to cover assist startup and it is also cancelable into a low (cr.H) or a high (fly S). Of course there’s the classic ADD j.H, fly, j.S, but there is a lot of potential with fireball, fly, and then air dash down at the time of pushblock and then unfly or use a normal. If you throw in an assist like rapid slash, or dark hole, you can get close enough for a real high/low while they’re still blocking an assist. It can be very useful for setups. Right now one of my corner incoming setups is, jump and throw a M fireball that should hit meaty while calling rapid slash, then air dash down and unfly. If it hits, go for a jump loop, If it’s blocked then go for a high/low.
Oh and if you haven’t mastered plink dashing yet, do that.
Yeah thats pretty much what I do. Manual flight is so good when you have a beam assist because her approaches get ridiculously safe and also hard to see.
Thanks Pat, you saying all that stuff out reminded me that I already do all of that (except flying/unflying to negate pushblock) except that I do it without really being aware of all of it. I gotta pay more attention so that I can actually do a setup rather than just applying pressure with no threat. My plinking is actually pretty good, I do tend to mess it up after around 4-5 plinks though. Tys once again guys:)
Somebody in the tier/theory thread linked a TOD combo with Morrigan/Doom/Ammy a few months back. (soul drain loops into a level 3) I wanted to study it to see what criteria her teams need to enable that kind of thing.
Ah. Well if you can’t find the video here’s a little something to get you started. Post of mine from 8 months ago:
With Ammy and Doom (midscreen and corner:D): s.:l:c.:h:f.:h: and Cold Star Soul Fist:h: xx AV Soul Drain xx Fly Soul Fist:l: xx Unfly Soul Drain xx Fly move forward (if you’re midscreen) j.:s: and Hidden Missiles s.:s:j.:h::s: Soul Drain
5-6 Soul Drains! Does around 485-500K I believe. Some things I’ve noticed:
-Works best the closer you are to the opponent when midscreen
-Works with starters like j.:s:, j.:l: but is tougher since it pushes them farther away when midscreen. Couldn’t really get it to work with j.:h:
-Doesn’t work with taller/bigger characters (Sentinel, Dr. Strange)
-In the corner, you gotta have Morrigan’s and her clones Soul Drain hit to make it work
I’m having difficulty finding out the timing so that the clones Soul Fist:l: will hit consistently, which is holding me back from considering this combo a viable one for matches. I had moderate success very, very slightly delaying the Soul Fist :l: or Soul Drain, but it could be with where the opponent is in the Cold Star beam but it’s hard to control where the opponent is in the beam.
I bet at the end you could fit j.H Shadowblade M xx Fly j.S instead of j.MHS, and get another Soul Drain at the end as well.
I just want to point out something. I know this combo looks super flashy and hype. But even though it builds 3 bars, it’s still meter negative by one whole bar and only barely kills nova. It’s probably still worth learning if you’re picking up morrigan/doom/ammy though.
On the flip side, it is +2 without using the level 3 and there was 50% of AV left before the level 3. Definitely worth learning IMO just without the level 3.
Ive started doing podcast discussion on the cast of UMvC3. Instead of just tiering them ive gone for a somewhat scoring system. Theres 10 attributes and each one is scored out of 10. I think this way makes for a more interesting talk and eliminates comparing characters to other, execution, etc which i feel isnt a good way to determine if a character is good or not. ill leave the Morrigan one i did with darchon25 in this post. everyones feedback is welcome, good and bad so i can make future ones better. if you could please leave youtube comments saying what you thought of it. structured well, points brought up and even if you would like to be on a future one. if you cant be asked a like or dislike is cool too. at the moment i have done about 6 with some knowledgeable and notable guests on some of them. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wONvAC9afDo
I played a guy in a first to 15 set for 200 bucks.
its starts around 44 min in. but i run my B-team for the first 8 games. after that theres a lot of Morrigan goodness in there.
Unfortunately theres also a lot of sloppiness and dropped combos. but I think youll enjoy it regardless
The way I play her is pretty odd, and I get scooped much more than I would prefer. But give me any immediate thoughts.
Why don’t you use the c.rH, stinger, teleport M, HSH, release round trip, sword loops with vergil after you otg them into skrull assist? Or even off the level 4? Why don’t you ever use swords, even with 4-5 bars? Were you just messing around in a $200 MM? lol
I found it hard to enjoy, but that’s only because I had to skip through to the points where you play Morrigan because you had her anchor lol. Anyway, definitely need to tighten up on your execution, you had lots of unfly/fly errors and random hits. Also gotta learn some XF3 combos, in fact her combos don’t really change much in XF you just have to do everything faster. You’re getting grabbed a lot because you’re not covering your approach very well, you need to shoot more soul fists when you’re trying to rushdown (I like using SJ Soul Fist L/M ADDF Soul Fist L/M when I’m at a distance where Soul Fist xx ADF j.S is meaningless) and shoot less when they’re so close (Like when Skrull was directly beneath you and you did Soul Fist xx Fly Soul Fist at SJ height, should’ve just Soul Fist and tridashed/plinked your way to safety). That’s all I got. V. Joe looks like your best character though, he looked annoying to fight against and I mean that in the best way possible lol.
