Modding the Hori Fighting Stick 3

same i have the stick gutted and I have the stick and the buttons free, but I need a dremel for the PSX digital pad. bummer.

you gotta sand the black frame too? i thought you only sand the plate… o.O im a little confused…

Zweihnder - any Sanwa or Seimitsu button will fit if its 30mm, if you get a 25, its gonna fall right through… to get your 30mm to fit rigt…you gotta scrape the little tabs off on both the plate and button…

Thank you, but I’m only interested in swapping out the stick, not the buttons. Would a Sanwa JLW stick fit?

oh…the stick… you know what…i got a JLW stick and i cudnt do anything about it… it will fit…but when u finish everything…the bottom plate wont screw back on because the rod of the stick will surpass the botton, which unables you to screw back the bottom plate, so im guessing any stick you buy will also give you the same result

i just kept the default stick (which works great anyhow) and soldered the wires onto the pcb…

^Did you do this before installing it?

I’ve been trying to figure something out regarding changing the buttons. I switched out the original buttons and replaced them with Sanwas and i want to put QD’s on. However, I was wondering where the PCB would sit if i use QD’s instead of soldering the buttons right onto the board? Originally the buttons were soldered onto the board so the board didn’t move around. Now if I were to put in QD’s instead, wouldn’t the board kinda just hang around or maybe even touch the bottom of the case?

Hot glue or tape the PCB down somewhere on the case.

haha i fukin ziptied my pcb from the hacked controller, it doesnt require any work really…

Will Seimitsu LS-32 sticks really not fit inside this stick? I’d rather go with a Seimitsu over a Sanwa…

Can someone please tell me the size of the small Turbo/Home/etc buttons at the top of the stick? Mine hasn’t arrived yet. I’m ripping out the original PCB, so I was hoping I could replace them with 18,20, or 24 mm Sanwa buttons. I could make the holes a bit bigger to fit the buttons, I assume…

They are 12mm.
I measured just for you:lovin:

You’re awesome, NotANoob! Thanks.

lol… and you wanted to fit 18, 24, etc in there? those are so small… but im sure you can drill an extra hole to fit on the sides…

Yup, I hadn’t received the stick yet so I had no way of knowing… Those 12mm buttons seem to be the same size as the Start button on a DC Agetec stick.

Here’s the pinout from the smaller PCB behind those buttons, if anybody is interested:

1 Ground
2 LED
3 Turbo button

8 Home Button
7 Turbo Switch (down)
6 Turbo Switch (Middle)
5 L3
4 R3
3 Select
2 Start
1 Ground

So if you’re putting the Fighting Stick 3 PCB inside another stick housing, you can just cut the wires and toss the small PCB.

EDIT: Here’s a diagram of the PCB:

Where can I have one of these printed out but with adhesive?
Any ideas?

And damn. I can’t believe I had not seen this thread. My local Gamestop has a new one of these sticks for $19.99. Going to make this baby my “Orange Box” (shamelessly taken from Valve)

Curious as to why people say FS3 > HRAP 3?

Quick question though, how is the weight on this thing? Looks rather small and light.

To contribute, and help the thread out, I found this amazing walkthrough, albeit using the Wii version, still, pretty much the same.

Well, I totally destroyed my last Hori stick because of a crappy soldering iron.

I bought a new one today and it was a complete success!

My other stick had an authentic Sanwa in it and I decided to keep this one modified with just a Sanwa Gate, Shaft Cover, Skirt and Bat Top. Side by side I could not feel the difference. Not worth the trouble IMO.

Now if I could get a Seimitsu LS5601 in there THEN I’d consider it but as of now this stick is cherry!

Good work, Jumpsuit! Yes, it is a lot of trouble to modify Hori sticks IMO…

Thanks!

OMG, I just had a priceless moment.

As soon as I finished testing my stick out, I swapped out the tops and called my buddy up to come and test it out. He is an absolute Sanwa stick WHORE! He won’t touch any game stick unless it’s Sanwa…anyway I called him up and asked him if he would come give this stick a test drive. I told him it was ALL sanwa(stick included)

He said “Man, this is good! See? You can tell this is a fresh sanwa stick because it’s a little stiffer but once you break it in it should be perfect! I told you sanwa has the best equipment for stick moding!”

After about 20 mins I couldn’t hold back any longer and I told him that he’s playing on a stock cheap stick and the only thing Sanwa about it were the buttons, gate and stick dress up touches. He gave me this look like I had betrayed him or some shit! LOL!

He made me open it up and prove it to him. He still had the nerve to say that Sanwas are better LOL

Placebo effect FTW!

Ok, just an update.

I got one of those mod curiosity bugs the other day and I decided to take the plunge and add a real Sanwa JLF stick to this stick and here is my opinion on it.

  1. Way too much damn trouble to install because each switch has it’s own ground. No common grounds at all.

  2. The hacking. My gawd. You gotta grind the shit out of the joystick end down to a nub, and then grind down the metal base plate.

  3. The wiring. Yes, having a harness that unplugs from the JLF is nice n all but when you have to solder each damn ground to the JLF circuit board it sorta defeats the purpose.

So what did I actually end up with? A stick that felt slightly softer in tension and a bit taller in height. This may make a world of difference to some people but for all that work I’d have to say I expected a bit more and overall it was NOT worth it. I was better off keeping just the Sanwa gate and stick dress up the way it was. It’s alot of work just so you can say “I got all sanwa…the real deal” in my stick.

I’ll come back and edit this post with pics soon.
