Modding the Hori Fighting Stick 3

Hi Twinniss, here are a few more pics:

Here you can see where i placed the 4 stacks of washers.

Here are the washers. I covered them in electrical tape in case they become loose and short something out. The screws i used for the cover are on the left. They are the same screws that held the original hori stick in place.

Here is a side view of the clearing i got once the cover is on. I kinda went a little overboard and got too much clearing but i plan to shorten it when i have time. I covered that open area with electrical tape

Hope this helps.

I freakin love this stick now.

I tried to use the original PCB with my FS3, but screwed it up and took off several of the copper rings. So, thinking I needed a new PCB, I ordered a Cthulhu board, but then saw posts about scraping the traces and soldering there. I tried this, but don’t get a signal. Can someone post a pic of the scraped off traces and solder so I know I’m doing this right?

Also, I would like to keep the Start/Select button part of the PCB with the Cthulhu. Does that work with it?

EDIT: Actually I just saw a pic with the Cthulhu and the Start/Select PCB… in this thread no less. Hopefully I’ll be able to figure out how to connect the two.

why are you trying to use the big fs3 pcb with the cthulhu board? You just need the chulhu since its already for ps3

thats what i did with my PS1 controller PCB…its easy.

here’s a video on how to do that even.

its around the 4:20 mark.

Yeah, I probably should have worded that better. What I meant was that I don’t want to wait a month plus for the Cthulhu to arrive, so if I can use the fs3 pcb now, then I will, and use the Cthulu board for another stick. But in the event that I can’t use the fs3 pcb at all (at least the button half), then I wanted to know if the Cthulu board could be used in conjunction with the top half of the fs3 pcb, since I figure it’s an easy solution for the row of buttons with Start, Select, etc.

In order to use the fs3 board as it is now, it seems that I would have to scrape off the green material on the traces and solder there, however, I’m not getting a good result from it, so I wanted to see if anyone had a pic or something to further illustrate what I should be doing.

Also, a new question: Has anyone here used a conducting pen? Would that be a good way to replace the soldering rings for the buttons?

Ok. I thought I would try this out and mod my fight stick. At the moment, I only wanted to change the buttons and I was successful in getting them in, but I failed at the wiring. How exactly are you supposed to wire the new buttons?

Wire a common ground wire to one side of all the buttons and attach it at one ground point on the PCB. then individually wire a signal to the other side of the buttons.

Does it matter which button prong the ground is on? I can’t get any of my buttons to work…

does anyone have a diagram for the hori ex2 mini pcbs on the top and bottom?

Hey, first time poster/stick-er/modder here, and I have to say, this thread helped me out a lot! I appreciate the templates and tips on how to print the art and such (I ended up lami-labeling at Kinkos). Anyway, I plan on ordering some buttons later, and I was wondering, what button colors would go well with this?

Does not matter which prong on Button is Ground or Signal.

No the buttons are simple switches so as long as there’s ground to one side or the other you should be fine.

In al honesty, I can’t think of a good button scheme except all white buttons, unless they have orange buttons that I don’t know about. Maybe some clear buttons, with the artwork inside of them?

A question for anyone who’s modded this with Semitsu buttons. The Sanwa buttons have 4 tiny bits of plastic that you have to grind off for them to fit inside the holes. Do the Semitsu buttons have anything similar that you need to grind down to make them fit?

i believe so If I remember correctly. You could also use Seimitsu screw in buttons though. It’ll be a little tight but you can fit them without grinding the plastic under the top panel. You just have to put them in in the right order.

Thanks man.

ive got an emtpy EX2 case that i plan on putting a JLF and seimitsu buttons in… the buttons are not an issue, just a bit of grinding… but as far as the JLF is concerend… how high does it stick out? the last thing i want is a shaft that is towering over everything. i think i saw a mod where someone just used the hori shaft… how viable is this?

thanks for anyones info.

Hey guys, I recently just bought some parts to mod into my Wii Fighting Stick and I just needed a bit of clarification in terms of mounting the gate for the JLF.

I’ve seen a few pics in the thread and a couple of guides but some mention having to drill holes on the gate and some don’t seem to have to at all. I just needed clarification on when you have to and when you don’t.

People are drilling into the Restrictor Gate because they use on stock Hori Joystick.

If you use Sanwa Restrictor Gate on Sanwa JLF, then no need to drill.
Because the Sanwa GT-8F and GT-Y made for Sanwa JLF, so why would need to drill?
It just clips on.

On the Hori Joystick, there is nothing for the Sanwa Restrictor Gate to secure to.
So drilling is required.
