Modding the Hori Fighting Stick 3

Ok, cause i know for sure the FS3 is CG. But i heard someone talking about cutting traces on the ex2, so im confused. Anyone know for sure on the ex2?
Thanks pensuke.

Ok peeps, so I’m getting a FS3 next week. I’ve been hearing that an out of the box FS3 isn’t really that good so not to be a noob but what’s a good site to learn more about modding and places online to shop for parts? I couldn’t tell you the difference between a PCB and a Restrictor Gate. lol

Im sorry, internet is being really gay and slow. Can some one direct me to the page that shows how to swap the shaft of the jlf with the hori shaft. Im trying to do a mod for a friend and dont have the proper tools at the moment.

Also, i have a question about the jlf installation. If i do it this way, would there be a problem with height or anything. Trim the outside of the jlf housing into a square, trim down the 4 mounting screw holes on the case until there level with the square shroud on the case. Then mount the jlf minus the gate with stock mounting screws. Drill 4 holes in gate big enough that the screw heads will fit through when the gate is installed.
Will i run into a problem.
thanks

AJtheMishima, here is the parts for JLF/Hori:

If you mount the JLF this way, you do not need to drill Restrictor Gate:
http://www.canonspike.com/Canon_Spike!/Joystick_Mods/Entries/2009/2/28_Hori_EX2_Sanwa_Upgrade.html
Also do not need to trim the four mounting screw holes.

I did the same way when installed JLF into Namco Stick.

Man I have been trying to mod a couple of these things for a buddy of mine at work and I must say they are a bitch to mod, especially coming from someone who just makes their own sticks from scratch…I got a whole EX stick put together and then came to find out the shaft was too long…ARG! :stuck_out_tongue:

AjtheMishima, yes what I did was used a dremel to cut the jlf housing into a square shape, I then took the screw holes (on the inside of the case) down to about half way. Now prepare the rest of your stick, top plate taken off (and buttons unmounted from the PCB) take a screwdriver and pop the end secure fastener off (its kinda like a C shape) on both the jlf and the hori joysticks. (They can be arkward) I then put the hori shaft into the jlf housing, added the jlf black bottom ring, either the jlf spring for a tighter feel or the hori for a looser feel, the hori actulator and finally the hori securing ring (Give it some force with a flathead screwdriver)

Then I positioned the new jlf housing over the screw holes cut down from earlier, put the microswitches on and used the original screws from the hori to mount the whole thing. I couldn’t clip the restricter gate on at this point. I noticed some small ‘tabs’ sticking out on the restricter gate, these were stopping it from clipping on, so I just dremelled them off and viola ! it fits, and it feels nice

wow you guys are awesome at modding your sticks…some great work here

now as far as the FS3 goes, i dont have a problem with the buttons or nething, but i want to just change the template (my friend is designing me a custom one with this layout)

do i just need to remove the regular sticker and apply the custom oine? or tak eout the entire plate or whatever its called to put it on?

thanks in advance

bump

If you are just putting on new sticker then ya you just take off the sticker and put in your new one , but if youre changing the button layout you need to change the plate.

I need some serious help here guys, my L2 button just stopped working yesterday! Here is the wierd thing, whatever function the L2 button is set to in button configuration, say throw or focus attack or what have you, it gets activated when I turn the turbo button on or off. There is no power going to my L2 buttons from the PCB, all other buttons have 3.28v going to them. Is my pcb the culprit or am i missing something here?

cool thanks for the response neemo

i wont be changing the stick layout, but im getting my friend to make a sweet custom dudley template

im picking up a TE so i just wanna mod this one slightly…but man the mods in here are awesome. id never trust myself to do those but id love to get a bubble top for the stick…

also as far as paint goes, what type of paint or whaetver works best for this sticks sides?

krylon fusion bonds to the plastic pretty well.

You can just peel off the existing sticker pretty easily. It is quite thick though, and you’ll want to remove the buttons first probably.

If you’re not actually changing the buttons, the new sticker is probably going to be difficult to apply, because the buttons are soldered directly to the PCB. You might have to cut your sticker holes large enough for the buttons to fit through while on

It took me two days, but I got the stick modded with the Seimitsu LS-33 joystick, LS - 56 spring, and Sanwa buttons (many thanks to Pensuke and others for pointers on how to pull this off).

Here’s my impressions:

  • Mounting it on the plastic seems fairly stable. I’ve been playing SF 4 for two days, and it feels like the plastic can take some decent abuse. Friend that helped me with drilling and soldering was impressed how sturdy the plastic felt.

  • I think it would have felt more comfortable with a longer shaft. I might just need a little time to adjust to the different feel. I seem to be having a harder time pulling off the charge ultras (mainly when I’m on the left side. no problems from the right) than I did on the hori, but like I said before I probably just need to get used to the different feel. I am able to pull off QCF moves more consistently than before.

  • I don’t get frustrated with the responsiveness of the buttons like I did before

Overall, it’s definitely a significant improvement over what was in there before. It’s too bad I still suck at Street Fighter IV.

Congrats dude. Whats the purpose of the LS-56 spring? Modding this stick got me excited about doing this kinda thing, too bad ordering parts from everywhere sucks right now haha.

To all the people who’ve been doing mods with new buttons/stick and have extra buttons lying around, I’m making starter sticks for a few new players around here, and I’m in need of any buttons and/or sticks. If anyone is willing to help a few stickless players in need simply by giving up any buttons they aren’t using (I’d assume with sanwa buttons hori buttons aren’t being used anymore, but I could be wrong).

Please contact me if you’re willing to part with some old parts. :wgrin:

Sorry for the potential noobish question, but my father and I are currently working on my stick and a concern has popped up.

We currently just have a JLF installed and wired into the FS3. All the wiring is exactly as it was with the stock Hori stick, and the 5 metal prongs (again, excuse my noobishness) are positioned top-right (just to give you an idea of how the stick is orientated).

Anyway, I plugged the stick in my Dad’s computer (running Windows Vista), and it’s only recognizing 3 diagonal directions.

My question is, does EVERYTHING have to be wired in order for the stick to work properly? No buttons are currently soldered in (waiting on some artwork to be finished in order to install those).

I will gladly explain my question further if it’s needed, just let me know what further details you need.

I had heard the joystick is a little loose so I ordered a ls-56 spring with my LS-33 so I could swap out the ls-33 spring to make it stiffer.

Akihabara shop posted a video of this mod on youtube:

Well I might be afraid that my PCB might be shorted out, just wondering if any of you guys who have taken out your pcb’s are willing to sell theirs? I might need it, will pay through paypal.

Fuck, I want one of those springs now but I don’t wanna wait like 3 weeks for one to show up.
