Here’s a lame showing it working.
Do you have any diagrams or FAQs to help us soldering/modding noobs?
Yeah, sorry to hype this up and drag it out. I’ll put up a full tutorial later next week or weekend. I’m out of town until next Wednesday for work.
Awesome work Kyle. Count me in for 2 bro. But I’m not gonna pay more than $60 US for each. Also would be nice if you could put the Saturn D Pad but use the Madcatz buttons, as the top 3 Saturn buttons are smaller and makes it harder to pull out stuff like Lariats and whatnot. Whereas the Madcatz buttons are all equal size. Thanks again for your hard work.
blitzfu, in my opinion, you’re asking a lot more than you’ve got right to ask. Considering Kyle’s doing this as a huge favor to the pad warriors in this fighting game community, a mere $10 for labor is very low. Consider that he has to pad-hack not one, but TWO controllers, the harder of the two being the Saturn pad since he also has to fit in a new cable, make a project box for the Xbox 360 pad, and then he has to also worry about packing these things so that they can ship out safely without anything breaking before it gets to the customer. And on top of that you’re asking him to buy a Mad Catz FightPad which has the only purpose of providing 6 buttons, expanding the top row of Saturn pad holes which takes quite a bit of effort to do properly since those buttons leave VERY little room for screw ups, only to leave Kyle with a non-functioning FightPad? If you want the Saturn pad feel for your Xbox 360 so much, you’d be better off just buying yourself two FightPads. You can save yourself a good $40.00 that way and that way, you can assign the shoulder buttons for PPP and KKK instead of trying to press 3 face buttons for Lariats or TAPs.
How the hell do you think he’s going to swap out Mad Catz buttons on a Saturn Pad? You freakin’ loco in the head man? And 10 bucks for labor? I’ve tipped busers more than that. Damn, seriously.
Heh, at least you understood what he was asking for. I didn’t follow. I don’t have the confidence to dremel those holes for new buttons. I’d probably end up killing the casing in the process. The buttons also need to align with the contact pad beneath it so I’m not sure it would work anyhow.
But yeah, basically $10 isn’t enough incentive to hack two pads. I’d think you’re better off doing the dpad fix on the Mad Catz pad that someone listed in another thread. I can definitely lower prices if people ship me the controllers to mod.
Next week I’m going to try and ship one out to serrano pepper for testing. If he likes it then I’ll do some more. My original intentions were to figure this out myself and then put up a solid tutorial for others to follow. Work has me out of town for the next few days so unfortunately it will have to wait.
I don’t have a great source for either the Saturn or the 360 pads. I’m in a small town that doesn’t really have access to flea markets, etc. We have a few pawn shops that I hit up when I can. No one sells Saturn pads here so they have to come from eBay. The 360 pads can be bought retail at GameStop for $25 which isn’t that bad but it isn’t cheap either. They’re low on stock so I may have to start getting these online as well.
Sorry for the rant. Most everything I’ve done and learned from SRK have been things I never imagined I’d be able to do. That’s why I’d be happy to make a few of these for the community as a thank you. I’ve got a full time job and a pregnant girl at home who needs as much love as I can give. If I was single in college I’d crank these out all day long just for kicks.
Yeah Kyle, you summed up the little nitpicky details I WANTED to express in a somewhat reasonable way…in a reasonable way.
I’ll say it’s awesome that you’re giving back to the community and more than I could ever possibly do. But I’m starting to empathize with Toodles here. It crushes my heart to see such a large number of projected Saturn pads losing their ties to their mother console (i.e. their Saturn cords). :shake:
I’m personally waiting until Toodles is able to draw up the schematics and possibly churn out a few Saturn to 360 adapter PCBs like he once mentioned so I won’t have to go your demonic route (I kid, I kid ) and preserve the integrity of my precious Saturn controllers (not that I have a Saturn anyway….
Also, there’s a Mad Catz FightPad D-pad mod? How is it that I’ve missed this?
EDIT:
Kyle, don’t mean to semi-hijack your thread, but in case anybody’s curious, the aforementioned D-pad mod for the FightPad can be found here I believe.
Already done. Got the pcbs in my hand. Just haven’t had time to write any code for it or type it up in a post.
Wow man, that came out of literally nowhere! I can’t wait to see your thread about it, Toodles! I’ll forewarn you that I’ll be asking a lot of questions though.
Cheers man, and thanks for giving the fighting game community yet another PCB option for their weapon of choice!
Oh, I completely agree. Sonic the Hedgehog probably sheds a tear when I snip the Saturn cord.
It’s been many years since I’ve played on an actual Saturn console. I have extremely fond memories of playing X-Men VS SF on it with the extra memory cart. That was the last era of consoles when I was ‘really’ into gaming. Now that all of the Capcom CPS2 titles I played on the Saturn are well emulated and I wouldn’t have much use for it (blasphemy). I guess that’s about the only counterpoint I can give. People would probably have more use for a PS2 or 360 pad that could also be used on the PC then they would a real Saturn pad. The PC JoyBox that allows you to use Saturn pads on the PC is discontinued along with the Xbox Magic Box that took me a few years to get my hands on.
Next up on my list is a NES to PS2 project box. I couldn’t even find a NES controller in town to hack. I would have thought I could have paid a dollar or two for those.
Damn, everybody got all judgmental. I was just making a suggestion and bargaining, not trying to dictate what Kyle should or not charge. I appreciate his hard work, and I wish I could be able to give back to the community even half as much as Kyle has.
But unfortunately I’m not very technical, and sticks cost an arm and a leg. So a Saturn pad is the best option for me on PS3. But I want to get an Xbox and the Madcatz pads are mostly defective, so a Saturn mod would be perfect for me.
As for fitting it with Madcatz buttons, again, that was just a suggestion, not an order. If it can’t be done, then fine.
Again, I was just trying to bargain, not say what the price should be. The only thing mentioned was $70, but I was trying to see if I could bring it down. Whatever the price ends up being, it’ll definitely be a steal. Thanks again Kyle, and I hope ppl don’t misjudge what I’ve said.
^ Don’t even worry about it. The reason I didn’t get all huffy is because I’m a cheap bastard myself.
Like I said, if people supply the controllers I can do these for cheaper. My biggest problem is that I have to order most of this online and can’t pick it up at the flea market. I’m going to do a PS2 controller when I have a chance (along with a tutorial). The dual shock controllers I need for that are about $10 versus $25 for 360 controllers so the cost of those would be lower.
My other concern is just finding the time. I know it looks like I troll a ton on these boards. That’s because it’s what I normally do with my downtime at work. Unfortunately surfing the internet time is not the same as at home soldering time.
Cool, thanks for the response. One question for ya:
Isn’t it possible to take the Saturn’s PCB (or whatever you call the inside of a pad) and use the Madcatz shell to cover it? After you’ve modded the Saturn to work on Xbox that is? And then just replace the Madcatz D pad with the Saturn D pad? Wouldn’t it be easier that way?
If you ever do get around to making that tutorial, and if it’s simple enough, I might just mod it myself. Thanks again.
I never really liked the saturn pad, now hacking a snes pad would kick ass!!:lovin:
It’s all cool blitzfu. I may have been a little haughty and definitely judgemental myself. It’s just that I’ve been hearing a ton of stories from a few sellers on the Trade Outlet having to deal with members trying to undermine their prices by ridiculous margins. I was a bit worried that something similar might happen here to Kyle since he’s already made mention that he’s considering selling these things out in the open and obviously, is going to be subject to either unreasonable bargaining or a huge volume of orders. Your reasoning, now that you’ve explained, made me understand the rationale behind your bargaining and I do realize now that it had no ill intentions behind it.
So, sorry about that. And yeah, Mad Catz buttons would still be hard to do on the Saturn pad. I think that you wouldn’t even be able to fit them in the bottom row, let alone the top. They’re pretty big. Anyways, welcome to the pad warrior brotherhood.
Well, I’ll say that the Saturn pad’s PCB definitely fits, but the issue comes when trying to get the rubber contacts to line up with the actual plastic buttons. Since the FightPad wasn’t tailor made to fit a Sega Saturn PCB, some of the rubber contacts won’t be pressed down by the buttons or the D-pad, meaning that you’d need to do some heavier modifications to get that working than to simply solder up some things. So, it’s doable, but a lot more of a hassle.
Cool, no worries.
So it’s actually more of a hassle. Ah ok. Damn, why couldn’t Madcatz be a competent manufacturer? And why couldn’t Capcom have given the licence to somebody competent like Logitech?
Ah well, I anxiously await the tutorial. Till then, more ST Remix on PS3 for me. :woot:
In all honesty, if you’re not planning on getting anything but fighters on the Xbox 360, I wouldn’t waste your time with selling your PS3. Every major fighter coming out will be on both consoles, and since most tourneys are now using PS3s as the standard console, you might as well keep your PS3. In that case, if you really want the Saturn pad feel for your PS3, then go check out eBay for those USB Saturn pads. They’re the second most epic thing Sega has ever made, next to the PS2 Saturn pads.
agree with this guy right here. i dont even have a 360.i just want this hacked pad bc some tournys here in ny r using 360 and all i use is a ss pad for all my fighters
Wait a sec. NES to PS2? I didn’t know people actually wanted to use those old 2-button pads outside of nostalgic value. The Dual Shock 2 is a great pad, anyway.
How about finding a way to fit the guts of a PS2 inside an old NES shell? That’d be a fucking amazing console to keep around.
