Looking forward to the progress on this. My brother in law has like 10 Saturn Pads all over the house and he’s planning on messing with this. He’s an avid Sega fan and is pissed the USB version works on PS3 but not 360 (Fucking M$).
He saw some way to do it with a kind of breadboard but it looks really annoying. So if you ever get it to work Kyle a tutorial would rule. He’s got the wired Xbox 360 pad and a bunch of Saturn ones.
The hardest part of this mod is soldering to those SUPER TINY points. Everything else was easy for me. This thread is pretty much a tutorial at this point.
Yep, that’s the only thing that has me nervous about any of this. I understand technically how it’s all going down. I’m just nervous that I’ll bridge those little points. My favorite soldering for n00bs tutorial says to tin the points but I’m scared to even do that. I think I’ll just try tinning the wire and see if that’s good enough.
What I mean by tutorial is, well, I have no idea what you guys are wiring this to. He’s planning on wiring it to a Guitar Hero controller PCB since they are so small apparently.
Where are those cables going to? Directly to another controller? What’s in the project box, etc. Basically you guys get it, but alot of what you’re saying is already understood by the two of you. All I see is a diagram, PCB and ??? = profit.
No rush though, he seems to have a plan already on where he’s going with it. Though I wonder just how that is going to work out with a Guitar Hero controller. The wiring on that thing is crazy, even IF the card is so small.
I think he’s trying to completely bypass the whole having to use a project box thing, but is that even possible?
I spent four hours poking around at this tonight. :wasted: The end result is fantastic and the soldering will be very easy thanks to a little cheating method I figured out (no IC legs for me thank you). :woot:
I feel simultaneously accomplished and zombified. These should be pretty easy to churn out for the people wanting one.
I played some HD Remix this morning and it was smooth as butter. God I love that dpad. :lovin: A couple of things:
The cable I used only had 9 pins so I couldn’t wire everything up. I nuked a couple of buttons sorting out how to easily solder them. I have another pad that I’ll do 100% once I do some more testing on my semi-butchered pad.
I couldn’t get the IC legs soldered so I checked out the Slagcoin diagram. The solder would adhere if I scraped the little nubs he has labeled. To make it even easier I scraped a box around each of the nubs. The solder would then take really easily. Once I did this I routed each of the wires where it wasn’t directly touching the contacts. At long as they’re routed around the contacts then you can’t feel it at all when it’s assembled. Obligatory crappy illustration:
I ordered 3 Saturn pads this morning off eBay for $11.50 shipped each. I don’t know if that’s a good price but it was the best I could find them for. I definitely can’t pick these up locally. Anyone know where I can source them cheaper than that?
There were also some sexy clear ones but the shipping sucked on them. Once everything gets in I’m going to make a 360 and PS2 version with a PS1 DS. There’s also a real PS2 Saturn pad up for grabs on eBay but I suspect that it’s going to sell for retarded expensive. The only one listed on the completed auctions sold for $250 used. Good grief.
I got in my DB15 cables late yesterday and stayed up all night playing with this. :wasted:
I’m happy to say that it’s working perfectly. It’s kinda sad, but my Saturn pad execution is about twice is good as what it is on my Happ stick.
The only downer is that I have to study the next few days for a Microsoft certification for work and then I’ll be out of town after that. So it’s probably going to be a week before I can put together a full fledged tutorial. It should be easy enough for someone with moderate soldering skills (still didn’t use the tiny IC points).
My three eBay Saturn pads also came in and they’re all in good shape. Once I have some time I’ll try and make those for you guys. I also want to try making one for PS2 (should be the same steps).
HEH HEH! That’s MY controller I sold back to emerchant for $190 and now it looks like he’s got it for 279.99:wow: shit should have hung on to it a little longer. This reminds me when I had a sealed copy of dracula x and sapphire for the pc engine and sold them for 300 then some dude flipped them for 750 the next day.:shake: and someone actually bought them. I gets first dibs on Kyle’s goodies when mass production begins. Have you considered a price for your hardwork as I feel it shouldn’t go unrewarded. Do you need an xbox 360 controller and sat controller to make it work. Don’t bother with schematics as lot’s of us are way to lazy to solder and perfer your quick fix. All in all whatever you decide thanks for taking the time and effort for putting this together as I know the MANY peeps I asked to create this puppy all gave me false hope and the “I’m just too busy syndrome”.:lame:
ok guys if u make this work i will no doubt buy that converter from u. bc right now i only play ss pad in all my fightin games. but only have a converter for ps3. and i really need one for 360 since sometimes tourny r holding it on that system. theres a tourny this saturday but it looks like i cant join since i have no converter or money lol. looks like ima have to sell my stick for me to get that converter. if u guys r interested check the trade forum later. jesus christ i need a converter so bad
Just FYI blaze this isn’t a converter. It’s a butchered Saturn and 360 pad soldered up together. It won’t be that cheap either unfortunately.
I’m trying to sort out what I can sell these for without putting the hurt on. Hopefully once I get the tutorial done some other people will make them as well. Right now I’m looking at:
$25 360 Mad Catz pad
$15 Saturn pad (eBay)
$4 DB15 cable (10ft)
$4 Radio Shack project box
At $50 cost, I can see why Fallback was selling them for $80. Seems pretty reasonable since it’s a couple of hours labor (for now). I would imagine there’s even more demand now that the Fight Pads are flaky on diagonals.
Serrano - I usually just do wired pads because you’d have to open the box to swap out or charge the batteries. I’ll see if I can pick some of these up locally. Like I said, it’s probably going to be another week before I can touch this again unless plans change at work.
That’s fine make it one hundred+shipping to Canada and put me first on the list. PM me your paypal id whenever you are ready and I’ll take care of you in a flash.
The X button had to be moved to the alternate solder point otherwise it felt mushy (hadn’t really noticed). Fortunately there’s a big fat point for it so I can still avoid the IC legs. Now everything including the dpad feels awesome.
For testing, I fully wired up a pad with the IC legs. It was a huge test of my patience and solder-fu so I’m going to stick to soldering the points on the board (like shown above) instead.
Pictures aren’t very exciting unless you’re a solder monkey. I’ll put up a Youtube video when I have a chance.
idk what ur talking bc idk shit bout soldering or anything lol./ but let me get this straight. ur using a saturn pad but the cable will be usb for the 360 correct?
alright gotacha. so its when everythign is done it ill officially be a 360 pad.just in a ss pad way. well when ur done put me on top of ur list bc i will be buyin one
