Yep. I want a NES pad to play on my modded Xbox. I can find PS1 controllers much easier than I can Mad Catz Xbox, so I just a use a PS2 to Xbox adapter. Also helps with PC compatibility.
I made a Saturn - PS2 pad this morning with a PS1 DS. Here’s a photo log that I’m going to update the OP with. I’ll add some text whenever I have enough time. Total cost was about $30 for anyone who wants to make one. After tonight I’ll be gone until Wednesday so I may not be posting much until then if all.
Have you considered using 6 button Genesis pads? Granted they’re missing the shoulders, but 6 button purists might not mind that. They tend to be $8~ for a pair, not counting shipping.
^^The Saturn USB on PS3 doesn’t have a Home button, which is the equivalent of Guide on the Xbox I guess, but as long as you a have a PS3 controller, you can use the Home button on that. A bit of an inconvenience, but if Xbox could do the same, I don’t see why not use the cheaper Genesis pads. I wouldn’t mind for sure, as long as someone can confirm that the Xbox controller can still use Guide when not being the “main” controller.
i cannot wait to do this mod, as for the guide and back buttons, i just plan to add 2 sanwa 24mm buttons to the project box and wire them directly from the hacked 360 pad. dude thankyou sooo much for this tutorial. I cant wait to have a 360 saturn pad
i got a question. when u connect a xbox360 pad to the system do u have to press the guide buttons for it to activate?im talking bout the wired ones not the wireless
I haven’t played on a Genny pad in a long enough time to remember if they’re as solid as a Saturn pad. The PCB looks very similar. Where is the Mode button the diagram references? I may be able to use that for Guide.
Awesome, yeah that should be easily done. Let me know if you run into any questions when attempting this.
It will automatically assigned it as player 1. You don’t have to do anything special.
I have a ps2 saturn pad (snow white color) and a usb saturn pad, and I think the d pad on the ps2 version is better. I’m glad I bought them when play asia was selling them back in the day.
Honestly the best thing to do is to put the guide button on the project box. If a guide button is mapped to the saturn pad bumper and you hit it by mistake when button mashing during an online ranked match its over for you. LOL
i just ordered cables from mono price. I got 15 pin m/f. Im wondering if i can just wire up the male and female ends to the 2 pcbs. That way i only have to hack 1 saturn pad and just connect it to whatever project box i want, ex: 360 or psx project box. Ill post pics if i get it working
Yeah, that’s probably the best way of approaching this. I made mine so that the system cable is a couple of feet long and the project box sits next to the system. The db15 cable is 10ft so it runs to the couch. My only problem is that I’d then have to walk over to press the guide button (lazy). If you readjust your grip slightly then you shouldn’t nudge those buttons.
Could you please edit this post and remove the IMG tags? I’m running 1024x768 (lame, I know) and those big piccers break the page formatting for me on the OP.
Glad to see the feedback from you other guys. Give this a try and let me know if you have any other suggestions.
i just finished my 360 project box and hacked up Saturn pad. Kudos to you kyle. I routed the wires exactly as you demonstrated and the pad feels stock perfect. I’m overjoyed this worked out so well. thanks to both you and fallback for giving me such an awesome project :bgrin:
I also wanted to let you know that the 360 pcb i used is a retro arcade stick. They carry them @ EB for 9.99 I did a local search and found 2 in TN. The pcb is great I even wired all 8 buttons. All I needed was a 10k resistor on each of the trigger buttons. So my final ss/360 pad has every button except the guide (Which is the 24mm blue sanwa on the project box) and the back button that is pretty well useless anyway. Thanks again for this thread kyle… YOU ARE THE MAN
Badass, thanks so much for posting pictures. That’s slick how you mounted the headset jack. Few questions for things I want to do:
Did that project box come from Radio Shack? What’s the part number on the baggie? I have one of those PCBs sitting around unused.
Did you use a single M:F DB15 cable? I’d like to make my next batch like that (disconnectable) since I now have boxes for PS2 and 360.
This is slightly dumber. What did you use to drill the button hole? I don’t see a easy/cheesy way of doing this with the Dremel. I’ve tried this a couple of times and it didn’t come out cleanly.
good job. I’ve been meaning to make a tutorial on how to do this for 3 years now, never got around to it. here’s some advice from a guy who hacked a lot of this shit. not that you guys need it.
what you guys should also do is shove as many pcbs in there as possible. like the one above. there’s plenty of room for more. instead of wasting money on more boxes.
if you have a glue gun, you should put a little glue on the soldering point for a tighter hold and to hold the wires in place, but be careful though
too much glue and you won’t be able to close the controller.
when ripping out the chip on the board, be patient and get ALL the solder out, because if you’re not, then you will rip the copper point right off and you’ll have an even harder to time soldering the scratched off line. (this one’s from experience so heed my warning.)
fallbackz: NOOOO! you let the secret out! I was going make mass money from this! j/k. nice to see you put my knowledge to use. saw you had some nice wireless saturn 360s controller setup.
here’s something for thought: this has been on my mind for a long time, but never bother to try it, you guys should get a small button and see if you can PUT it on the controller and wire it to one of the extra wires (depending on which DB15 cable you get, some comes with 15 wires instead of 14). I actually have one of those button on the madcatz controller that I hacked. the button on the top of the joystick of the madcatz classic controller. the trigger. so someone do it if you’re looking for that extra button for sync or back/select.
mounting the mic port was a pain. I mounted the it with hot glue but i used too much and i clogged the far end of the port. i had to remove it from the structure with a hair dryer and scrape the glue from the inside of the port with a very small flat head screw driver.
as for the hole for the mic port, i used the green dremmel bit and just took things very slow and cautiously. after words i used sand paper to smooth things out and even the edges. I made the hole too large so if you notice there is some grey material on the mic port itself. That is common household weather stripping i put it in place to close the hole completely and keep dust out.
all and all i am very pleased with the end result. I cant wait to make a psx project box. i bought a second cord from mono price. I will just match up the colors on the female end of the db 15 cable.
kyle, thank you for you kind words and questions, it makes me feel important. and to all involved in figuring this out, shrimpnoodles kyle and fallback, thank you SOOOOOOOOOO much. I love SF4 with a saturn pad. I never thought it would be possible but its AWSOME:woot:
