Modding a Mayflash stick (finished! 1/18/2009)

Hey guys. Hopefully this question hasn’t been asked, or maybe its just too obvious a question to ask. I’ll ask it anyway cos I need the help.

Just took everything that needs taken apart - apart. Now, need to buy the parts, extra wires, souldering, and to make sure I don’t f’ this up.

Right, for my first question that will be asked, amongst many many more future questions that i’ll post.

I’ll be buying from the UK based online store Gremlins Solution, which was a suggested link in the sticky in the tech talk forum, but before I place an order, are these buttons okay to use:

Sanwa Pushbuttons OBSF-30 Snap In

and I’m having a bit of trouble choosing a stick because there are a couple of different models, Sanwa branded ones, and I’m wondering if there’s any difference as to placement of screws, size of the base, etc. It seems from doing research Sanwa JLF are recommended to JLW so I’ll be getting JLF. Basically here they are my options:

Sanwa Ball Top Joystick JLF-TP-8YT

Sanwa Joystick JLF-TP-8Y-SK

Sanwa Joystick JLF-TP-8Y

Sanwa Joystick JLF-TP-8S

Which one should I get?

Thank you TS, and to the informative posters, look forward to you guys reply, so I can place my order.

Thank you

Any JLF but the ones with the S mounting plate would do…

thanks for the reply

I’m not sure what a S mounting plate is but since since any JLF is cool, then I’ll go with the cheapest one kehe, I’ll go for the Sanwa Joystick JLF-TP-8Y + Sanwa Pushbuttons OBSF-30 Snap In, which comes up to 17.70 + 3.50. Which isn’t too bad, gna order it tomorrow after I come home from gay ass work. Hold on changed my mind, gona get the Sanwa Ball Top Joystick JLF-TP-8YT which is 2 more than the one I was gona get, this one seems to be popular and couple days ago, out of stock, so I’m guessing this is the one to get, plus the picture of the other stick looked funky, so I’ll go with this one.

Another question, do you think I should buy a LF-H 5-Pin Cable with the stick:

It’s just that the Mayflash has those red & black wires that use to attach to the old stick, so I guess I don’t need that LF-H 5-pin cable, right?

ooh, and for the buttons, I’m having a bit of a head scratcher about attaching them to that green board (called the pcb, i think). It seems that people solder some wires to the board, and then solder to the buttons, but I think the original thread poster used electric tape, and some peoples pictures have this thing on the end of the buttons, i think there called .110 female connect something or other. there like these rubber things that poke out from the bottom of the buttons, what do these do? are they easier than soldering?

apologise for the long post, but you can imagine from the questions, where i’m at with these.

Uhhmm… for the joystick… You could get a JLF with a flat mounting plate if you want… And youre supposed to buy that 5 pin connector because you cant really wire the old wires to the stick itself…Try reading brokenhalo’s guide

For the buttons, You have to solder either way because you need to solder it to the pcb… The female quick disconnects are easier to un plug because it just slides in and out… If this is your first time modding this stick…Its hard work and expect to do something wrong…so befroe you mod it prepare for it

By the way, what’s the best PS1/2 >to> PS3 Converter out there?

What did you use to put that artwork??

I think best one is inPin??or Pelican??

ya i will like to know too.

honestly, i would say scrap the artwork if you are going to do an ls-32. the shaft on the ls-32 is pretty short to begin with, so if you add a sheet of plexi for art you’ll just be left with a nub. here’s an ls-32 i did to give you a visual. it’s since been sold.

edit: or you could use lamilabel like peterislazy did. that looks good!

are those the female connects at the bottom of those buttons, how do those work? do I still need to solder to the bottom of the buttons with those?

You crimp the wire to the female connects and you plug em in

I got parts in, and I’ve started the mod, most of which was figuring out how to mount the stick without putting visible screws in the top of the case. Crown 203C buttons install with no issues. I’ve worked out how to install a Myoungshin Fanta stick without altering the top panel, which was important for the project. I’ll put up some pics later.

Hmm…Korean parts lover lol

Uh…was there any point to this post?

How are Korean sticks…Cant wait to see the pics Warpticon…

Korean sticks are interesting. I’ll go over them in detail once I get home, I think.

Okay, I’ve skimmed through this thread and everything and tried to read as much as I could. So if I ask something that’s all ready been answered, you have my apologies.

I just ordered one of these for $45 with shipping (not bad considering) and this is my first joystick ever. I’ve read that it’s a decent little stick for the casuals. Which I consider myself to be (I play on 2DF maybe 2 hours a day, almost every day). I’m all ready a little worried about the durability of the stick so I ask these questions:

I know nothing about Soldering, but I could pick it up pretty quickly if I needed. Plus my Father knows all about this shit, so it wouldn’t be a big deal. I want to keep the Stock PCB, but how hard would it be to Solder this thing? I’ve looked at the site on the very first post about modding, and it seems pretty straight forward; remove old wires, solder new wires, use a Dremel to widen it a bit. Done.

What are the essential items that I need? Other than the stick and buttons of course. I all ready have the Soldering and Dremel tools.

On a scale of 1-10, how hard would this be for a newb to accomplish?

Also… any sites other then Lizardlick selling parts?

Biggest question: Why are Sanwa parts so highly regarded?

Gamingnow.net is open for order…I think…

Well you need
-arcade parts
-dremel
-wires
-soldering stuff
-nuts and bolts

Its pretty much basic modding but you just have to make sure which one is which.

Thanks for the link. Okay, I know I need the Arcade parts so that includes the actual stick and buttons, do I need a gate too? I would guess the Mayflash all ready has one. Should I use Insulated 22-26 AWG wires? What kind of wires would I need specifically?

Thanks.

my:)

If you don’t plan on dual-modding (adding a 360 PCB) like I did…then the hardest part is going to be soldering to the small connection pad for the buttons. Only thing hard about it is the small space. On a scale of 1 to impossible, I’d say this is probably a 3. A little more work than other base platforms might be, but not that difficult really.

Read the FAQs, please. I imagine the parts-distributor question has been addressed there a couple of times, and I know that there’s tons of information on why Sanwa is so highly esteemed… as well as the pros and cons of Sanwa in contrast to Seimitsu and Happ parts.

FAQs are your friends.

Edit: Dang. kowal. You don’t play around.
