Modding a Mayflash stick (finished! 1/18/2009)

Very nice mR_CaESaR! Did you put together those adapters yourself? I need me some plexi and artwork too.

Nice mod mR_CaESaR! im doing right now mi own mayflash mod, is good to see that some of my ideas will work, because you made it exactly the same way i was planning to

yeah i did the adapters myself… used the guide that’s on this forum…

thanks… make sure you post pics

As much work as i put into this stick… i’m going to have to let it go… :frowning:

Jesus Christ that is a beastly mod.

Extremely nice work!

Found what I needed. Also you weren’t being rude at all, mR_CaESar. Great mod by the way.

I have a the 2009 revision mayflash pcb, and am in the process of putting in a sanwa stick. I’m planning on soldering leads directly to the Sanwa’s switches, like this:

Do I really have to cut the cut the traces if I go that route? It seems like the signal would go right through the switch and bypass the circuit board entirely.

No bypass since it maintain contact with circuit.
Still have to cut Traces.

God help me, I’m going to try and mod my Mayflash.

I have never modded anything before.

I am scared.

edit: also, can someone update the first post of this thread with links to various guides and helpful posts like the one quoted above, etc? You can understand people who are easily confused when it comes to stuff like this having a hard time waging through 400 posts.

mR_CaESaR, how did you mount that JLF? Did you use the stock mounting bracket and just place the JLF on top?

TS, just go slow and don’t be afraid to ask questions. The hardest part of the modding process is soldering and that isn’t very hard at all.

This is the guide I followed, TS: http://m.chupon.free.fr.

The only thing you should do differently is the artwork. Save it in Photoshop as a pdf at 10.24x7.9 inches and 600 dpi and have it printed at Kinkos, use a paper cutter and scissors for the edges, use a sharpie on the cuts, and get it lanilabeled. For the button holes lay the artwork on top of the Mayflash and cut from the top using an exacto knife. It’ll look pro.

It’s also worth it to cut the traces on the joystick if you have a newer pcb. I tried using the Mayflash switches instead like a few people did here, but on mine they gave the stick a really nasty deadzone that was trash for fighting games.

Like Freezer said the soldering is really the hardest part. Just make sure you have a desoldering braid and a really sharp tip on your soldering gun and you should be okay. Also, don’t be an idiot like me and try to get away with using 18 gauge wire or you’ll need to go and murder someone in the woods about halfway through the process :annoy:. 22 gauge is definitely the way to go.

pretty much like the guide posted mayflash mod guide and or this guide http://www.ozhadou.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3276

just be careful not to drill too much otherwise the screw will come out on the other side, it wont’ matter if you plan on chaning the artwork, you can always dremel it back (that’s what i did :D)

Yeah, I was actually fine with the Mayflash switches for a while until yesterday when I thought to myself: what’s the point? Unless I plan on buying my next JLF piece by piece separately on AkihabaraShop.jp without the micro switch PCB array, a new JLF is always going to have the micro switches included. So I went and got to work with a utility knife and a soldering iron.

Just finished the wiring of my Mayflash mod, so here it is:

Full sanwa mod, 8x OSBF-30, JLF stick with black shaft cover, plus full plexi cover.

As you can see, the button layout is made to play KOF without remapping any button.

I used the mayflash pcb because i want to play with it in my ps2 too, and i must say that works great

Nice!

The first of several noob questions: what’s the best place to buy buttons and a Sanwa?

you have a few options…

www.lizardlick.com
www.gamingnow.net
www.modchipman.com
www.akihabarashop.jp

that’s a nice and clean mod hunter! well done.

Arn’t the sticks common ground anymore?

Pretty sexy mod, liking the artwork.
Where’d you get the Plexi from?

Thanks man, i try to

Nope this one

Thanks buddy, and Yup, the artwork looks fine… because the original KOF XII poster is fo fucking great

Handcrafted, i made it

I’ve read whole topic and I gonna mod my Mayflash too, but first I would like to ask few questions because I’m confused with some things. I’m form Europe and I found two online arcade shops so far: starcab.net and arcadeshop.de. Anyone can tell me if there are any major differences between them?

I want to place my order asap, but I want to make sure I have everything for this:

1x JST type B connector - 5 contacts female
1x Sanwa Joystick JLF-TP
8x Sanwa OBSF-30 - Red

I will buy normal copper wires from local electric shop. Is this all I need from online shop?

Another question. What’s the difference between those two types of connections?

Another question: I’ve heard mention of different models of Mayflash PCBs? Is there a way to tell which I have, and if so what is the difference?
