Modding a Mayflash stick (finished! 1/18/2009)

The fact that the new mayflash PCBs are not common ground make the stick a lot less attractive. Those were very useful for dual-modding, it’s sad it’s not the case anymore…

Exactly this. Although, I’m a bit skeptical about the whole non-common ground. The Mayflash PCB is essentially a PS2 PCB and USB PCB printed on one board, which is it why it’s FORBIDDENED to connect both the PS2 and USB in at the same time.

I have a problem (and please bear with me I’m new at this). I have found several great guides on how to mod the mayflash stick and decided to go for it. I ordered it off of amazon and plugged it in just to mess around with, and the joystick seems to register as the left analog stick on my ps2 and ps3 instead of the d-pad. (I tried it with God of War Ps2 and Armored Core Ps3)

This is a big problem for me cause i can't seem to find any info reguarding this. I want to play Tekken 5 on ps2 and (eventually) Tekken 6 on ps3, however, Tekken 5 for ps2 does't have analog stick control at all. (mabey 6 will but I doubt it).

Is this an issue with how the PCB is "programmed"? or mabey the stock hori stick it comes with? If I mod it with a sanwa will it fix it? Please Help! I don't want to have wasted $40!

I need my ps2 to "think" that "up" on the joystick is "up" on the D-pad NOT "up" on the analog!

I know i could just throw the pcb away and re-wire it to a old ps1 or ps2 pcb, but the way the mayflash pcb uses both the usb and ps2 plug in on one cord seems convinient. I don't want to destroy a controller and buy some usb adapter.

I really plan on only playing tekken 6 with this but it's not out yet so I have only Tekken 5 to test it on. Sorry for any redundancy.

Edit: I have the “newer” mayflash where the buttons are the same for Ps2 and ps3. (I understand there are two different models)

I don’t think the Mayflash comes stock with a Hori Joystick.

well sorry for that, I don’t know what kind it is but I still need help with my problem. Thank you

Goto control panel
Game Controllers
select mayflash arcade stick
properties
REMAP
and change the directions to POV
this will force the joystick to register on ONLY the D-pad.
THe default autosetting makes it so it works BOTH d-pad and left joystick att he same time, a requirement for PC, but this remap will allow you to play. well, thats for PC anyways.

PS2 is kind of stupid but see if you can remap the buttons.

Thanks for the help but I tried that and it did not work. Did you mean that the POV option only works while plugged into my computer? or that it saves the “POV setting” of the mayflash so that it would work for ps2 also? cause I can mess with mapping buttons all day for my pc but if those won’t carry over when I plug it into console than its really of no use to me. Thanks again.

Also what would happen if i used the ps2 plug and usb plug at the same time? I almost wan’t to see what it does.

You will fry the PCB and it will not work anymore. The PS2 and USB plugs are pretty much a dual PCB setup on one board. I’ve already mentioned this in a previous post.

The Mayflash PCB should input both dpad and left analog when using the joystick. I haven’t done extensive tests but this doesn’t really present a problem. Something might be damaged on your PCB if you’re only getting analog inputs.

i hated modding this stick.

Has anyone who has modded this for 360 had any success adding a headphone port? If so, where did you place it and how did you go about doing the wiring for it, or if its the port directly on the controller, how did you mount it?

Thanks FreezerB, maby I did get a faulty one. I’ll try to return it then.

Here’s my finished dual-pcb Mayflash.

Sanwa JLW w/ OSBF-30 and OSBN-24 buttons, Madcatz 360 controller, stock mayflash pcb, DB-25 switch. The JLW is mounted 1/4" below the top with a wooden spacer, all held in through two screws countersunk below the dust washer. I’ll get internal pics posted tomorrow most likely… it’s messy though since the 360 PCB was not common ground, required alot of extra wiring.

The switch on the front switches between the Madcatz PCB and the PS2/PS3 Mayflash PCB. I’m trying to come up with some custom art for it, but I’m at a loss for now.

Sorry for the crappy image quality (cell phone).

Many thanks for FreezerB for his painstaking soldering!

Hey guys, I’m planning on building a whole Sanwa dual mod (PS3/360) setup with the Mayflash as my base. I’ve read just about every thread here on SRK, and I don’t understand what the term “common ground” means in terms of the PCB.

I’ve noticed that people tend to use either Madcatz or even the Retro stick’s PCB to attach to the stick for the 360 functionality. I have a regular (1st party) 360 controller PCB attached to my current stick.

So my issues are: is my PCB “common ground”? What reprocussions are there for it not being common ground? If I buy a Mayflash stick and put my current Xbox PCB in it, will I be able to perform the regular dualmod on this stick and have it work?

Common ground for modding joysticks usually means you can daisy chain the grounds on buttons and then terminate at one ground terminal. For the Mayflash, it’s 8 button terminals and 1 ground terminal on the PCB.

If it’s not, you need to connect a ground for each button to a specific ground terminal (time consuming). For a non common ground, you’d need to make 8 terminal connections for the buttons on the PCB and 8 terminal connections for the ground for these buttons on the PCB as well.

Anybody know a good place to buy the Mayflash stick for < $40 USD? I’ve seen it on Play-Asia for $30 but its shipping weight of 2.0 kg makes the cheapest shipping option to the US cost $34. For $64 I’d rather spend another 6 bucks and buy a Madcatz SE stick at my nearest Fry’s for easier modding. I’ve also seen it on renchi.com for $30 but like PA, being located in Hong Kong can’t mean very cheap shipping.

I’m not sure at trying to get one for less than $40, because mine was I think around $50 from Amazon not too long ago.

I am having a trouble wrapping my mind around the 5v connection from the Mayflash though. I’m looking at FreezerB’s picture, and I see the connection going from the 360 PCB, but I can’t for the life of me tell where it’s connected to on the Mayflash PCP. Maybe I’m overlooking something subtle? Can anyone shed any light on this? I have all the parts sitting in front of me, and I’d really like to finish the stick.

does anyone know if Ultimate joysticks and buttons fit into the Mayflash?

No first party 360 controller is common ground. You will have to use a Mad Catz retro stick or a Mad Catz controller made in and after 2007.

I got my friends to order arcade sticks with me so we could offset the price of shipping. We ordered five from Play-Asia, making it $50 bucks per stick. Try Amazon and if you can’t find it, go ahead with the SE.

The 5v line is the red wire on the Mayflash PCB (there’s only one red wire coming out of the cord and onto the PCB). I reused the solder point on the other side of the board.

I’m assuming you have the common ground version of the Mayflash PCB.

A joystick may fit but the buttons will definitely not. They are way too tall for the case and will not fit.

Thanks for the quick reply. I do have the common ground Mayflash PCB, so I can just solder it to the bottom of it? I’m sorry if this sounds like a noob question, but I’m just stumped. If I provide pictures of the pcb and everything, do you think you could take the time to circle it or something?
