"Mmm... You look like you're in good shape": Juri Q&A and General Discussion Thread

Hi all. I’m fairly new player (SSFIV is my first SF title), and I’ve got a few questions about what I can do to up my game with Juri.

First off, safe jumping. Against Ken, for instance, SJ j.hk seems to be DP-able no matter how I time it. If SJ’ing isn’t viable against him, what can I do to capitalize on untechable knockdowns? Are there other SJ setups that I’m not aware of?

Second off, baiting. When I land a knockdown against someone I haven’t fought before, I typically play it safe the first one or two times to see if they are going to try a reversal.

Unfortunately, scenarios like the following are frustratingly too common, and I believe I know why. For example, I knock down Ryu, then walk up like I’m going to throw or insta-j.faps, but then block low to try to bait a DP. He gets up for free. Second time, same thing. Then, the very first time I try any sort of meaty, or do anything other than let him get up for free, I eat a DP in the face.

I don’t think this is because the players I’m facing have magical wakeup-option selects of doom, but rather, because of my own lack of ability to put out a bait that is believable.

What sort of options do I have to make my bait more believable without getting counter-hit?

Thirdly, what are some good basic frame traps that are easy to work into a real fight? It seems like whenever I try to add something new to my game, I usually find myself in over my head, and unable to apply it practically in an actual fight.

Thanks in advance, I really appreciate it. :pleased:

On knockdown vs DP characters if you do J.mp/J.hp right over where their head is it makes Dps whiff so you can get a free punish, depends which one you use what you want to achieve.

J.mp - makes Dps whiff, catchs backdashs (if you hit them during their airborn frames you get a free juggle), you can cancel into lk dive kick on block/hit, can confirm into a combo on hit. Very unsafe on block if done to high on their hitbox though.

J.hp - Either makes Dps whiff or beats them outright, doesnt catch backdash, gets a techable knockdown, cant get a combo from it, you have the option of hitting crossup, safer to followup on block.

Basic frametraps you can take a quick look at frame data and its pretty much all there for you to put together, so something like this would work:

St.lk xx cr.mp xx fireball store (3 frame gap)

First of all, you need to understand how jump recovery works. Read this: Super Street Fighter IV/Game Systems/Landing Frames Trip Guard - Shoryuken Wiki, Marvel vs. Capcom 3 Strategy and More!

Basically, safe-jumping works on most characters, but certain characters, most notably Ryu, Ken, and Akuma, have reversals that come out too fast for this to be possible. In order to jump in and block a reversal Shoryuken, you must fake the safe-jump, either by doing it a few frames early, or by not doing an aerial attack.

This is all mind games. Against a character like Ryu, you generally have to make guesses and try to learn your opponent’s habits to know how to pressure them properly on wakeup. However, Juri does have some tools to ease this situation. First of all, she has a very good kara throw (assuming you know what this is). Because of this, she can threaten with a throw while standing outside of the range where a Shoryuken would be cancellable, making it risky to use. Another nice move she has is her Fuhajin store, which has a lot of active frames and very good priority, so it’s actually possible to use this attack while Ryu is waking up to stuff his Shoryukens. If he uses it, he recovers standing, so you can run your next mix-up immediately. The only way for him to get through this is to burn a meter for an EX Shoryuken. You can use this if you’re feeling scared of a reversal but want to put on a little bit of pressure at the same time.

Anywhere:
close s.LK, c.MP - 3-frame minimum gap
close s.LK, c.HP - 4-frame minimum gap

Corner:
L Fuhajin (release), c.MK - 2-frame minimum gap
low EX Fuhajin, c.MK - 1-frame minimum gap

Interesting… Makes a lot of sense, actually. Good to know.

Okay, so I’m not just messing up here (I don’t have an arcade stick yet [SOON!], so I wasn’t sure if this was just my crappy controller). So, if I understand this right, I can empty jump from a distance that where SRK would ordinarily just hit my active frames, causing it to whiff?

Fuhajin charge stuffs non EX-SRK? Didn’t know that. That’s huge!

Meaty Fuhajin is a MUCH better option than just sitting there hoping he hands me something to punish.

What can Ryu/Ken/Akuma potentially do on wakeup that would stuff a meaty Fuhajin charge? And could this counter be countered by simply releasing the charge or going into cr.lk or cr.mk?

Thanks, I’ll definitely get started using these. My main game used to be Soul Calibur IV, and in SCIV, frame traps were a huge part of my game.

One more quick question: For Juri’s cr.mk OS, does this input look right?
(with Juri starting on the right)
Backthrow, slight delay, jump in, late HK (hits around knee-level), :db: mk, (buffer) :qcf: lk, :db: ?

They Can wake up ultra or ex tatsu.

I base my game vs Ken/ryu around this. If you space/time it wrong you get a trade. Your goal is to stay out of the range of their active frames and to hit them after their invincibility ends. In the corner I always go low. They’re always trying to fadc so they get tagged since it’s so fast.

The way it works is… When you throw a move out in the air you recover for 4 frames (I believe). The Srk hits you during these frames. If you empty jump you recover right away and can block this.

Another way to pressure Ken and ryu or anyone is to throw mid fireballs on their wake up. Use this to force them to block.

random question. I wanna do a photo manipulation of just Juri’s feet on the ground with the background blurred. What should I do…should I take the picture of her falling from the sky when she starts the match? Or should I take a picture of some womans feet, paint on her tape and fluffy pants?

And if anyone has any photos in mind for this? (Foot fetishists?), or can get me an HD photo when she falls…let me know!

Good Games to you as well. It was kinda disappointing that we were the only Juri players at the tournament and we were in the same pool, lol. I went 4-2 before I got knocked out and had to look forward to either facing Tokido, Marn or Sabin in our bracket @__@

How well did you do in Marvel? I pretty much got molly whopped, but it’s all good :stuck_out_tongue:

4-2 isnt bad at all man xD
I went 3-2 in Marvel, lost to Remix and Blackapino… and they crutched it out with random shit, i had them almost to no health and they kept doing random supers till one of them hit and it killed me, damn Phoenix and her crappy health =_=

out of those i wouldve chosen Marn coz he’s out of practice it seems thanks to mvc3 XD

Thanks, I think I’ll probably play her again at Atlanta Revival on April 30th along with Rose. I’ve also got to level up in Marvel, badly. I straight awful right now, lol

Can anyone give me tips on how to be better Juri player maybe high level? Having hard times beating scrubs sometimes lol.

I got nothing. I’m free vs scrubs. Lol.

Out scrub them. Or use standing lk. that shit stuffs everything.

Same here. :'D

They’re so unpredictable and try so many unsafe stuff; I can’t read them at all! Except flowchart yellow piss Kens, you just know they gonna smash srk.

:nono:

I kinda figure that I freaking hate them trying to get to a higher rank in SSF4 fight better people but, I heard they are still scrubs on higher ranks. Random dp and stuff is crazy xD

Scrubs are everywhere no matter what rank they are. One of the scrubbiest rose players is like rank a and thinks he’s the shit (yet literally he can go unchecked for a while without blocking on kd)

Scrubs are fun to play if you can keep cool. It’s a different game. A puzzle you gotta crack.

I dreamt Juri had a command grab that’s kind of a sexy taunt but with pursuit properties.

She would so be mid tier if she had that.

She would be top tier if she had that. Counter > command grab. Sexy.

I fought a Sagat last night who leveled me, even though he was jumping all over the place like crazy. Normally, I’d be able to handle such scrubs by using c.mp but he was doing it constantly, adding in mk that stuff my attemtps at AA. I simply couldn’t keep up and I was not pleased when I lost.

Just the nature of the online beast, I guess.

Scrubby grappler players make me laugh, they just mash that command grab whenever possible.

I quit Juri, I’m just ass with her :frowning:
