MLG Stream Sets a Dangerous Precedent

It’s good to see that I’m not the only one who can see this.

i stopped watching 2 hours into day 1 when i realized i spent more time staring out my window and wishing i was watching anything else other than MLG

highlights:
at one time i timed 35 minutes inbetween streamed sets
insightful esports commentary from fubarduck and theanswer (“Uhh… uhh, uhh… Justin should throw more fireballs.” “Yeah. That was an uppercut.” “That looked odd. I have no idea what is going on right now.”)
that guy who came and checked on the PS3 and both player’s controllers inbetween every single game like he was making sure the players weren’t a bunch of negroids getting ready to run out with the gear on a live stream infront of thousands of people

i think the main issues are that the production in general was too sterile and dry. if the matches are going to be 45 minutes apart, cool, just tell me that with text on the screen. dota and sc2 streams have been doing that for years. don’t try to hold my attention with ryan harvey trying his hardest to not act like someone’s pointing a gun at him while he drinks a can of dr. pepper on screen.

on top of that their format was bad- it was explained on twitter that they run in ‘stages’, which meant they had to play all the way through a ‘tournament round’ before we could get new matches. this is not something they’re willing to compromise on. if they’re waiting on 1 dude for 30 minutes just play a different match, don’t hold us back.

the most frustrating thing of all though was just how it was all handled. i know i vented my frustrations at art on twitter and i apologize for being pissed off at the time, but jesus christ dude. “we are mlg we will not compromise.” is completely different from what we heard not even a couple fucking weeks ago when the fgc vs e-sports drama went it’s hardest.

fuck mlg, fuck jared rea, and fuck e-sports. i just want to be able to watch fighting games and be entertained. that shouldn’t be a struggle. it is not hard to see a way to monetize the format we have now, if we have to clean our language up to do it so spooky can live in his streaming mansion with hoes on his dick while he plays fighting games before he takes his private chopper to the next major then fine. i’m cool with that. the community is pretty much stepping toward toning down what would make us undesirable to sponsors anyway.

what we’re left with is a bunch of people who travel all around the country, put on streams watched by 10k+ people all over the world every other weekend, and love what we do.

I know you guys did your best but it’s clear that they (the esports guys) don’t really want to find a “middle ground” themselves, because the current FG events are a good standard to build upon already, but they still want to do it their way instead of sitting and talking with us (or at least with you as the rep) on how to advance in our way of doing things.

They need to stop being stubborn and develop a “fighting game division” (emp_lol) that will work differently from their usual starcraft and halo stuff.
And as Watson said, if the money just goes to prizes, while the events themselves are worse for the rest of the community, the top players would be there just to take the money and leave, and the rest of the people will just not care.

i don’t like you, and you don’t like me

but can you do your windows movie maker magic to this:

and splice it together with the worst elements of that MLG stream? i’ll resubscribe to your channel

Just posting here to say that Go Bananas is one of the pinnacles of modern cuisine, and has addicted quite a few attendees of Next Level, myself included. I might register as GBS Flux from now on in tribute to the glorious drink of the gods.

Seriously its fuckin astounding it was discontinued

There was a lot more on Sunday and after one of the games finished we could some of the people more chairs other than those benches in the front.

I’d like to point out something to everyone who thinks that our grassroots events have Capcom games as the main stage because of favoritism.
That is simply not true.
The reason why Capcom games are the main event at EVO and others, is because the vast majority of players play Capcom games.
FGC events are COMMUNITY events.
If KOF or MK were to outnumber SF or Marvel at EVO by a significant amount of players, then those games would be the main event, its simple as that.

Our community is growing so much that this is completely possible within the next few years.
So don’t ever buy the notion that our community doesn’t support other non-capcom games.

just to add to jd’s statement, hell, evo even gave smash brothers a try. so to say srk/evo hasnt tried to accommodate other communities would be a lie. evo even had a fan vote in tourney one year for melty blood i believe. all im trying to say is, be careful what you wish for guys. there is no problem with being more respectful, and theres no problem evolving. the problem is dont become something so far off from what you are and what you represent to where you are past the point of no return. who is going to pick up the pieces when the shit storm is over? i doubt so again, think is over.

It’s funny that you say all that and then quote Watson’s post because Watson’s post was the prime example of what I was saying you should have done. But you seem so ridiculously fueled by this idea that yelling at something is going to change shit when that has worked maybe less than 10 percent of the time in any given situation. But instead of listening to reason, and pointing things out coherently with a clear voice like Watts did-- you immediately assume that I don’t know our history with MLG nor is it necessary to stop using hyperbole.

By the way, I’m really impressed by your counterargument to me asking “How is MLG dangerous” being summarized as “because it is.” It’s good to know that you ignored that I stated how the business model ISN’T SOUND if it loses viewership and it clearly HAS with your post and the overreaction being a clear example. Why in the fuck would you continue throwing up ad space like that if it loses you viewership. That’s counterproductive, and streams like Level|Up and Spooky weren’t born yesterday.

Yes, you let people know the problems with an event by writing an article-- but your piece wasn’t an article, it was a rant. If you write a rant, people are going to write you off. If you talk out your points like Watts did, maybe people will actually listen to you. Or you could of course ignore everything I just said and pretend I’m the magic shill dicking it out to the corporations just because I don’t think telling someone to go fuck themselves solves the problem.

I’m not blind to the past, I know what’s happened with MLG and EVO before. But I’m also not a fan of stupid hyperbole.

the recent MLG MK stream was pretty hype actually.

Watts much respect and I see where you’re comin from hopefully we can discuss it more sometime

It’s finally over I think we improved a lot on day 3

Compare day 3 of this, to the infamous SFXT exhibition… A huge progress in the right direction.

And the most important thing is that 3 niche games got some love they deserve.

MLG events are way more spectator oriented than I initially suspected they were. As someone who in all likelihood will go 0-2 and wants to play as many matches as possible against anyone willing to play, why should I attend an MLG instead of watching on stream?

the HYPE

That’s one of the main things people don’t like about the e-sports.
In FG events we are all players. In e-sports it’s a few players and a ton of spectators.

I just don’t understand putting the players in an empty room

Yeah, there’s a cultural difference for sure. It’s really like a sporting event from my perspective.

OK wowa hold on… I’ve let a lot of assumptions slide in reading this thread the past couple days but I’m just going to stop you right there.

There are an incredible amount of people that play StarCraft 2 that attend the event. There are different types of people that play as well… For fun, casually, regularly, hardcore, professional… and many in between. The culture difference isn’t really players vs non-players, its actually foreign players vs korean players. Basically Korea vs the rest of the world. Korea is by far and away the pinnacle of the way starcraft 2 is played and watched. And for the most part, it’s usually the hardcore and professional players that enter the tournaments, while the casual players humbly just spectate and leave it up to the pro foreign players to try and tackle down the monster that is Korea.

The sc2 community is also plague with a heavy amount of anxiety. For some reason, a players biggest hurdle is to click on the “Find Match” button.

As someone who went to nearly all MLGs last year, and wasn’t able to go to this one, I so wish I could have been there. The suppose stream is spectator friendly so that if you weren’t able to go, you at least had a good product at home that you can be happy with. But attending the event is by far the best way to go.

My counterargument is a little more than “because it is.” I wrote why MLG’s model is dangerous in post 61.

People listen to Watts because he’s O.G., not because of him writing in a coherent manner. This is the same guy who told off DSP and Sirlin live on stream. If he would have said for MLG to screw itself, people would respect it just as well. Speaking of coherence, I don’t understand your comment on that either. I have given evidence or reasons to support my claims.

And lets be honest here, that 10% statistic about yelling at something, that was complete B.S.

We dont need MLG. We have done quite well for ourselves without them. If anything, MLG needs US.

WE were the ones who continued to support fighting games when Capcom and the rest of the main stream didn’t.

WE were the ones who spread the word and got people interested in our events and streams

WE are the ones who bring hype and turn a boring event into a moment you’ll never forget.

And they want us to adapt to them just because they toss more money into the mix?

No. They will adapt to us. Not because we ask nicely, but because we know they are all about the money.

This community has worked too damn hard to throw it all away.

You know, I’ve been saying that the community has lost its roots for a while now. People “called me out” on the front page for “trolling” when I would say that the stuff posted on the front page is garbage and I would call Keits dumb for posting such irrelevant articles/videos/etc. Everyone was blind to the changes that were going on, well now you guys finally see it. I can’t wait until it all comes crashing down and the FGC is stuck in the “dark ages” again. It’s only a matter of time, but it WILL happen. The stream is just the start. The changes are too big for the community to take in all at once right now.
