It is obvious that some people continue to miss my original points:
MLG “takeover”: I never claimed that MLG is going to take over. Not once. The concern is that the MLG model itself would. I.o.w., the danger itself is the precedent that was set: Three big name fighting games (SCV, KOF, and MK) are being backed up by MLG. The stream itself is constantly being bombarded with ads. If MLG gets the stream numbers they are looking for, then it would be deemed a success and they would try to repeat it. If it continues to be a success, what would that say to advertisers who want to come to our events? They would come in with the same expectation: The MLG model works better than your model, and if you don’t use it then we won’t sponsor you. How many tournament organizers want to hear that? You don’t think that’s dangerous?
“Let’s all work together.” We tried that. We tried in 2005, we tried in 2010. It didn’t work. MLG has continuously demonstrated how “willing” they are to work with us. They’ve had about 7 years to learn from their mistakes and so far the best they could do is bring in JuiceBox and FubarDuck?
I guess we should still try anyways right?
It is unreasonable to think that asking them nicely to not play as many ads would actually work. I would love to be wrong on this, but as I already pointed out, MLG is a business. You are essentially saying:
I know you guys have had a TON of success making money off of ads after every match, but, we don’t really like that, so could you guys maybe not do so many ads in the overall stream? I know that you won’t make as much money off of us, but we’ll put on some great matches and bring hype!
Do you honestly expect MLG to say:
OK fgc, we’ll make less money just to please you, because you bring the hype with dat mango sentinel!
No, the MLG model, WOULD NOT…take over, for various reasons. You are too eager to pessimism. So much conjecture on your part; you’re afraid it could turn out bad when it may just turn out well.
You are hardly thinking about the overall picture and alternative possibilities. You just have some personal misguided grudge, but you want to present your melodramatic rantings as being sensible. Well no. Can’t even be bothered to touch on all of your miserable points.
Rather than just attacking my person, why don’t you actually give the very reasons you “can’t be bothered with”? I don’t mind if you disagree with me, but posting just to say you can’t be bothered to post and following it up with some pop-psychology diagnosis is completely ridiculous.
MLG didn’t even break even till last year I believe. It’s a business but that’s cool. It’s presented as sports, but that’s cool. You know that thing basketball? It has timeouts dedicated for commercials in game, but that’s cool.
Edit: for the record them going to commercial break every single time isn’t because of $ also. It’s not that black & white.
Streams are not a necessity. Ad revenue is not needed. Sponsorship of players and events is not required.
This statement swings both ways, and the only side that’s playing their part right is the one reaping the benefit of players who buy in. Do you see them on here complaining openly about how the community is not supporting them? No. It’s not as if it’s a secret that SRK is the most heavily populated fighting game forum on the net, though. If you have a problem with how things are done, then don’t tune in. It’s that simple. Don’t talk about it on the forum, not even in a negative light. If you’d like any form of media that relies entirely on ad revenue and corporate sponsors to go away, then ignore it. Once those sponsors see how few people care about a game’s stream, they’ll have it dropped. This is the cost of being owned by a sponsor, this is why the FGC does not need or desire ownership.
People have already told MLG countless times what they need to do to have a successful event. Inkblot went on a show to tell the ESports guys that they need to preserve the arcade spirit, that the model they are using for other games wouldn’t work for fighting games. UltraDavid has pointed out how different the demographics of your typical fighting fan is from your Starcraft fan. Spooky warned the ESports guys that they are not ready for fighting games, they need to understand the community more and as things stand they will end up being disappointed by the end results. And MLG pretty much told everyone to fuck off and tried to use the exact same model they were using for Starcraft/Halo on their fighting games. With this kind of attitude what chances does MLG have of being successful with fighting games?
Good match all around! The stream never loaded when I went to the MLG site, but worked when I went to the SRK front page. Match was hype, crowd was not.
While it’s fine to hate on MLG, and it’s good to complain about the things that they did wrong, I truly hope that, if they wise up and improve their handling of FGs, that people will encourage that by watching the (improved) streams. (rather than sticking to the hate and never supporting them regardless of what they do.)
Whilst their streams are ad-infested and no good, then vote with your eyeballs and don’t watch them.
An MLG that has its act together and treats FGs properly is overall a good thing, imo. Let’s not kill the possibility just because they suck at the moment.
We had like no notice for this event, and also NCR was the same weekend. If the can get capcom games, and get their schedule straight… the crowds will grow
If you guys were disappointed I’m sorry. I tried. I know what the FGC wants, I just can’t make it happen at this point in time. I hope a middle ground can be found.
The FGC had evolved and became what it is long before MLG was around. MLG originally was more of a FPS genre which in itself makes it an entirely different community with different concepts and ways of doing things.
I think MLG’s problem is using their format that was originally intended for tv doesn’t co-side with an already established community. I think the idea of MLG doing fighting games is good because it brings an entirely new audience into it that normally may not have paid much attention to it. I would have liked to see MvC2 in MLG awhile ago. I’m not going to diss the announcers because they are fans just like everyone on this forum is of these games. There are announcers from this community who I don’t particular like. Troll commentary can and has made me watch matches with the volume off. However I do think MLG isn’t taking fighting games as serious as their other games, i.e. players playing in an empty room. I mean if half those people in the room were watching KOF alot of those matches would have created ALOT of hype, benefiting both FGC and MLG
But this is where the community should come in and over advice on how to run a fighting game tournament because it is no where near the same as doing a fps tourney. Don’t get angry just have some representatives offer up better examples of how to do things like EVO, SEC etc do. The FGC will be happy and new viewers will be drawn in by the same format that drew many if not all of the people on this forum here.
I think it’s a good thing they have FG’s now they just need to reformat how the run these tourneys
And fix that audio to video lag, you knew the end of the second round before the first was over sometimes
sure the stream could of been handled better with commercials n all, but it wasn’t so bad after they were shown after every set.
all I was interested in was KOF and you have to be a damn fool to miss out MLG just because it wasn’t ran by the FGC (unless you weren’t interested in any of the games) . If you got love for your game you’ll watch regardless of whos streaming it.
commentary was dry at times but I honestly rather have the answer commentating than someone like hellpockets, roger dodger, IPW, spooky etc. for the sole reason that he is way more familiar with KOF and the top players that they are. I rather have a more knowledgeable commentator than an entertaining one.
shit, the jusitus/skye v. Mr.Kof is one of the best KOF sets I’ve seen yet. that set alone was worth sitting through those commercials in the beginning.
MK/SC/KOF need another chance at MLG cause who the hell really has time to fly out somewhere with 3 weeks notice and on the same weekend as NCR unless you believe you have a serious shot at getting top 8.
seriously, why do people think MLG and FGC cant coexist? MLG only has 4 events a year. people need to get over this shit, this doesn’t affect 99.9% of the people who post on these forums anyways.
Most of the ‘FGC’ will always be disappointed. Just keep doing your thing and the people that appreciate it will support you the whole way. Most of the more level-headed folks understand that this is a process, and MLG was wise in picking a community member to help them through the transition. Keep it up!
there is so much to say yet having an open forum its extremely tough to have a good debate and bring all arguments to the table. there are good points being made here and i would just like to add a few. the main argument esports brings is that they will bring in more money for the FGC. let me ask you guys this, by bringing in more money what does that do exactly for the community? this money will basically effect less than 1% of the entire fgc. do you think this money will make the venue nicer? do you think this money will make your experience more enjoyable at the tournament? the answer is no. this money will be nice for the winners of the tournament and thats about it. the money might also go to tourney organizers aswell. but heres one issue. as of right now top players are willing to travel to the current tourneys and spend their money to attend events such as NCR and Final Round. lets say all of a sudden mlg or someone else offers pots of 25K or more. do you think these top players will make an effort to continue and support the current majors we have? the answer is most likely no. specially if they happen on the same weekend or close to it.
im not going to argue with people who might think this is some type of conspiracy theory but i will say this. the current fgc has flourished and grown a great deal in the past few years and i think the people at the very top are doing a fine job of accommodating everyone. there will always be an unhappy side to every issue but i truly hope people can see that this isnt a battle of someone caring about the fgc and trying to make it better. this is a business trying to creep their way in and do what they can for financial gain. from a business standpoint, great… from a player, fan, and devoted fgc members standpoint, this is not good imo. once there is nothing more for these companies to gain do you think they will stick around and continue to support the fgc the same way evo/cannons/etc have throughout the years? that question i can answer with a definite NO.
just dont be blinded people, take time to study the history and remember why you love the game. if you love commercials, if you love to be censored, go be a part of this esports stuff. if you love the game, and you love the community, and you have enjoyed the ride you have been on so far, stick up for the FGC. dont really wanna force people to choose sides, but the intent of mlg and esports isnt hard to see. “we want to bring in more money, we will bring in more money” this is pretty much their slogan, think about what ive said and lets continue the debate. have a nice day.
