MLB (Baseball) 2009 (including fantasy leagues)

How do you say this then proceed to botch the following statment:

You sure it’s not because the first WS games played in November were due to 9/11, and Jeter had big games then? Unless Jeter played in any other WS games in November that I’m not aware of.

Uhh, I’m aware that Derek Jeter is called Mr. November, but it’s not because “they” always made it that far in the postseason. 9/11 lengthened the 2001 Season, leading to the only non exhibition Major League Baseball games in history to be played in the month of November.

This is beyond common knowledge, dude.

…yes, I am aware of why he is called Mr. November. Regardless of what caused it (I’m very well aware of 9/11. Should I list the family/friends of mine that it affected also?), that’s when the name came up.

I appreciate the quizes guys, but I’m ok, thank you:)

You were over here trying to quiz us, dude. Obviously you didn’t know, because you talk about it like baseball in November is a common thing. If you even WATCHED the World Series on a yearly basis while simultaneously looking at your calendar, you’d know this.

Like I said…Baseball obviously isn’t your forte, and it shows. Nobody cares, but if you don’t know what you’re talking about, people will call you out on your claims of being a “Yankees megafan”. If you’re new to watching baseball or never really cared back in the day, that’s cool too and nobody is going to judge you for it.

Carpet Lint, trolling along as he always does, called me out and said something stupid like do I know who Reggie Jackson is, so I defended myself. Simple as that, then everybody decided to gang up on me and declared I don’t know what I’m talking about because I didn’t list every single detail about why Jeter is called Mr. November.

I have been watching the Yankees since I’m 6 years old, have gone to over 10 games, have a tattoo of them on my arm, and an entire upstairs floor dedicated to the Knicks/Yankees/Rangers/Giants…but I’m not a Yankees fan lol. I also watch the WS every year, and watch as the Yankees lose the first round 3 years in a row, then DON’T make the playoffs last year, and now win the division again (haven’t done that since 2006). I keep up w/the Yankees, and to have a tool like Carpet Lint talk down to me about “do you know who Reggie Jackson is” just confirms what I’m saying, he’s a troll.

This is why I don’t post in the MLB thread often. Don’t have a problem w/you really, you are cool, but idiots like Carpet Lint, not worth it. Plus…it’s kinda dead anyway:(

you do know the difference between “every single detail” and “the one and only detail,” right? Pretty sure you wouldn’t take the shit you do over talking out of your ass if you’d stop talking out of your ass–or, at the very least, when you get called out in a painfully obvious way, acknowledge your wrongness instead of typing multiple paragraphs about how you weren’t really wrong.

I just want to post ITT just to say

Grenkie better win the CY Young.

Yeah he’ll get it. Unless the voting guys seriously overvalue Sabathia’s wins I’m fairly certain he’ll win the award. 1st in ERA, 2nd in strikeouts, 1st in WHIP. 16 wins playing for the Royals is a more than respectable total.

Now the NL Cy Young award winner is another matter entirely. It’s too close to call.

Dodgers lost to the Pirates today. There are at least 3 NL teams that are happy about that. They play the Padres in a 2 game series. I’ve never heard of a 2 game series so late in the season. I’ll have to look into why that is.

The Tigers-Twins game’s been postponed. They’ll play a doubleheader tomorrow. As long as the Tigers split the series they’ll be okay. The Twins still have to face Greinke one more time this season (Saturday).

If the stars align and Greinke has to face the Twins in a make or break scenario for Minnesota’s playoff hopes, do you think the outcome will have something to do with whether or not he takes home a Cy Young? There’s no denying what he’s done to this point on a REALLY bad team, but I think slamming the door on a team’s playoff hopes will really help him with some of the more uptight voters.

I was hearing that if the Twins and Tigers finished tied, the tiebreaker game is set to be played in Minnesota. On the same day the Vikings are set to play the Packers.

That would be so fucking hype.

It couldn’t hurt but with the way he’s finished the season in addition to the total body of work I have little doubt that Greinke will win the award regardless of how he pitches on Saturday.

Braves did what they had to do. There’s a huge difference between being behind 2 games with 6 to play or 3 games with 6 to play.

So what are our current tiebreaking scenarios in regards to the NL Wildcard and AL Central? I’d look it up myself but I’m too lazy, and getting somebody like Matrix to do it would actually help give this thread a little bit of life over the next few days.

Well, if the Braves and Rockies end up tied, the tiebreaker (for home field in the playoff game) is the winner of the season series.

That would be a tie 4 - 4. So I think it goes to a coin toss then to determine home field in the playoff game.

AL Central’s only between two teams so if they’re tied they have a play-in game.

NL Wildcard I suppose there could potentially be a 5-way tie between the Rockies, Braves, Marlins, and Giants, and Cubs. It’s highly improbable though with the Rockies in particular having to lose every remaining game.

Generally the policy of MLB has been with 3 eligible teams to have almost like a mini playoff where one team plays another and then plays the second team the next day. Whichever team won a coin flip would have home field advantage. This is only in theory however. It’s never happened before. With a 5 team scenario I’m not sure what would happen.

They changed the rule this year that the winner of the season series has home field in the playoff game instead of a coin flip. Last year the White Sox hosted Minnesota despite the Twins having won that season series.

With three teams I think the order is division game first, if it were Braves - Marlins - Rockies, The Braves and Marlins would play first then the winner playing the Rockies.

I was just reading about several close calls in regards to potential three-team playoffs in the old days, but this was in the pre-divisional, pre League Championship days.

Honestly, I’m surprised it didn’t happen at least ONCE before the 1970s.

There was a potential 3-way playoff last year between the Mets, Phillies, and Brewers. All three could have ended up tied. Milwaukee was out of the division race, so their chance was the wild card. If that had happened, the Mets and Phillies would have a play off to determine the division winner, and the loser would have played the Brewers for the wild card.

But Florida had to eliminate the Mets for a 2nd straight year and ruin that.
