We might have ended the regular season a little prematurely. The Twins are only 2 games back of the Tigers for the AL Central and they still play 5 more games against each other. The Twins also have 6 games left against the Kansas City Royals.
Wouldn’t be the first time Detroit blew the division title to the Twins. Except this time they don’t have the option of a wild-card spot.
Let’s not forget MLB Tonight’s obnoxious mantra…never count out the Minnesota Twins.
What’s going on with the Texas Rangers? They’re in Dallas basically so they have a large market but their payroll is under 70 million. I know that the owner is in serious debt and can’t even afford to water the stadium. MLB is forcing him to sell the team.
There’s a rumor that MLB is going to force the Rangers to shut down Kevin Millwood so he doesn’t reach enough innings to activate a player option next season. MLB would wind up having to pay for it since the owner Tom Hicks is pretty much broke.
Basically the Rangers are in a bad way right now. I wouldn’t be shocked if in a couple of years from now they weren’t called the Portland Rangers or the Utah Rangers. Things are that bad in Texas right now.
They are in Arlington which is 15 minutes away from Dallas. =) Football, and Basketball also pretty big there.
Hicks fucked up royally when he traded A-Rod and got stuck paying part of his deal for it. He also owns the Stars hockey team and that hasn’t been good for him recently either.
Portland Rangers has a nice ring to it or maybe the Portland River Forders.
imo.
Yankees fans everywhere are grateful for A-Rod. If only he can perform in November:(
This isn’t 2001 man, nobody is performing in November.
You’re more of a football guy than a baseball guy, I can tell.
The Rangers are a bastard franchise that has never been run well, to be honest. They didn’t even last a decade as the second incarnation of the Washington Senators, and outside of a brief period of promise in the 1970s, there just wasn’t much put on the field.
The Ballpark in Arlington was supposed to be the Rangers’ ticket to credibility. There weren’t many teams building $200,000,000 stadiums in the early 90’s, and to their credit, they really went all-out. It’s a beautiful park, but it’s been a nightmare for their pitchers, and for ticket sales. I attended a game at the Ballpark In Arlington on or around my 6th birthday, in May of 1994. The Park had opened THE MONTH BEFORE, and I very clearly remember there being NOBODY at that stadium. The crowd was comparable to what you’d find at a AAA game.
Everything that this franchise has tried under the last two ownerships has failed miserably…I chalk it up to a curse you can’t shake, and that is the ineptitude of the Washington Senators legacy. The Twins got off the hook when they brought that franchise back from the dead and shipped it off to Texas.
I am absolutely 100% convinced you’re just trolling this thread now.
Do you even know who Reggie Jackson is, Mr. Life Long Yankees Fan?
I just noticed Daryl Strawberry looks like Bunny Colvin from the Wire.
DAAAAAARRRRRRYYYYLLLLLLLLLLLL.
PS - Go Phillies or something.
So The Rox don’t have many more games to slam the door shut on the Giants. They finish up their series with the Padres tomorrow, then they face the Cards and the Brewers at home. Afterwards, it’s off to L.A. to finish the season. The Cardinals and Dodgers are likely postseason opponents for the Rox, and the Brewers aren’t a bad team either.
Meanwhile, the Giants finish a series at Arizona today, then go home for a homestand that includes four games against the Cubs and three against the Diamondbacks, before going to San Diego to finish the season with a three game set.
Obviously it would take a big meltdown by the Rox at this point for the Giants to clinch the Wild Card, but given their schedules, it seems entirely likely. I’d imagine Colorado’s 5 game lead is at least going to be halved by this stretch, but we’ll see.
I can’t believe this thread is so stagnant at THIS point of the season. I hate having to double-post, but we haven’t seen any action here lately so I’ve got no choice.
How 'bout them Braves? 2.5 games back of the Rockies in the Wild Card, riding a 6 game winning streak up to this point? A few weeks ago we were talking about the Giants spoiling the party for Colorado, while Atlanta crept up to 85 wins. With Bobby Cox pulling a Mike Holmgren and announcing his retirement a year early, this may or may not be the last time we see Cox managing the Braves in a meaningful scenario. Should be fun to watch.
Well, I know I’ve never really posted in this thread, but for me personally as a sports fan, football and the upcoming basketball season are at the forefront of my mind.
Besides the AL Central & maybe the NL Wild Card, the playoff teams are pretty much set. Don’t expect a lot of action in this thread until playoffs start up. I know that’s when baseball will be receiving a lot of attention from me again.
I think the Braves must win on Monday against the Marlins. They have 1 more game to play than Colorado so it’s imperative for the 2.5 deficit fall to 2. Luckily they don’t face Johnson. In their final series they play the Nationals while the Rockies play the Dodgers. Of course the Dodgers may have nothing to play for so that might not be a great advantage for Atlanta.
Obviously time isn’t on their side. The Rockies have to fall off badly while the Braves have to play great. Whether they’re down 2 games or 3 games with 6 to play makes a huge difference to their psyche. The Braves must win tomorrow.
“May” is the most important part here…the Braves not only have to worry about winning their own games, but they’ve got to hope and pray that the Dodgers can’t clinch homefield advantage in time for their series against the Rockies.
Great job NY Yankees lets keep it up.
Dodgers 93-63
Phillies 90-65
Cardinals 90-66
The Magic number for the Dodgers clinching HFA is 5. They play the Pirates and then an odd 2-game series with the Padres. Both of those teams are awful. Assuming they take care of business and the Phillies and Cardinals falter once in the next 3 days I think the Dodgers are going to be relaxing against the Rockies in the final series. They own them this season (12-4) so maybe some of that mojo will carry over to the backups who’ll likely be playing the final weekend of the season. I kinda doubt it though.
You are beyond stupid if you don’t think I know who Mr. October is. Hits 3 home runs off 3 different pitchers in the same game, the straw that stirs the drink, former free agent of the As, gtfo and post something useful. Don’t ever question my knowledge on the Yankees you clown.
Grimm: Derek Jeter is called “Mr. November” because they always made it that far to the postseason. Obviously, it’s been quite a while since we made it that far (too long).
haha i met darryl a couple months ago, nice guy
lives in my area and came and talked to my rehab group :smokin:
I almost hope the cards finish lower than the phills, i like us over the dodgers. The phillies too with the way their closer situation is now. Only the rockies worry me.
