MLB (Baseball) 2009 (including fantasy leagues)

Wasn’t it like last year (or was it the year before?) where we won like 20 or 21 games in May?

God, I’m depressed. The horrible thing is that I knew it was going to happen so the whole time I wasn’t able to enjoy it properly…and now that it’s finally happened, I almost feel somewhat responsible for it by expecting it.

Why do I follow sports?

I remember playing RBI Baseball for the NES as a kid, and was like “The Royals? Who plays that shitty team? LULZ!”

Of course, playing Chicago was no better, either…

That one guy who played the Royals in the 80’s wasn’t too bad? What was his name again? Oh yeah. Bo Jackson.

Bo Jackson was okay. One time All-Star…meh.

He did some really ridiculous things on the field, but over the course of a season he wasn’t Hall of Fame material or anything.

Only two years with OPS+ over 108, and one of those was an .805 OPS season. Nowadays you can get .800+ OPS outfielders a dime a dozen.

His best year he had an .866 OPS - if that happened this year, it would place him at 55th in the league currently - just right above Felipe Lopez, Dustin Pedroia, Brian Roberts, and Richie Weeks…all second basemen.

Now if he had played baseball full time and put together a couple more seasons, sure, I think he would have been amazing.

When he said “that one guy” I was expecting George Brett or Bret Saberhagen. Just some royal bret or another.

Obviously any year after 90 isn’t worth mentioning since he was missing a hip. Even in his heyday 87-90 he still put up good numbers. No question he was a free swinger but when he hit the ball it was gone. He was getting better every season. His last semi-healthy season was his best and he was getting better.

Don’t forget that he was also a good defensive outfielder. 3 seasons with double digit outfield assists and most of the time people weren’t foolish enough to challenge his arm.

It’s anyone’s guess but if he wasn’t hurt all the time including the major injury he could have had one hell of a career.

No doubt, that’s what I’m saying.

One of the greatest what if’s in sports history - what if Bo Jackson had a full career in baseball?

You look at this stats now, and they’re fairly unremarkable.

But you see him do the things he did on the field, and you wonder that if he ever had gotten a decent run, how good he would have been.

I feel the exact same way, I tried not to put my hopes up, but now that it happens, I can’t bear to even look at sport pages any more.

WHY CANT YOU GIVE ROY SOME HELP!

He should be 10-1 right now. And he might get hosed out of another Cy Young from another one year phenom, like with Cliff Lee last year.

God, he deserves to play for a real team.

You say the stats weren’t all that and maybe they weren’t but you have the understand that the 80’s was way different from the 90’s and especially this decade for homerun hitters. Back then if a guy hit 25 home runs he had a great year. A guy with 30 home runs had a monster year. 40+ was like an all time season.

There wasn’t expansion pitchers to deal with or hitters ballparks like Coors Field, Camden Yards or Arlington. Then there was the juiced ball. Don’t even get me started on the juiced players.

I’m not sure of many things but what I’m sure of is that Bo Jackson could have played in any era and put up good numbers. If he played in his prime now or in the 90’s he’d be one of the best players in the league.

Or football?

:u: Well he got injured playing football…so a What If He Didn’t Get Hurt is a less interesting question than What If He Only Played Baseball. The former you can ask about a ton of guys - the latter, not so much.

Plus you consider the relative average career lengths of football players vs. baseball players…I think Bo Jackson got his money’s worth in football, where you’re only expected to play a few years at most anyway.

Brevity is one of the reasons I consider his baseball career as is fairly unremarkable.

But you look at OPS+ as well, and there’s really only the two seasons. Two good seasons, and we’re still talking about him like 20 years later. And they weren’t even like Doc Gooden good, they were just good.

I have no doubt Bo would still have great success in today’s league. I have no doubt that he’d be an even bigger star in today’s internet age as well, which is definitely saying something - “Bo knows” would have KILLED in the YouTube age. Even now, there’s not too many professional athletes that can match his athletism.

You ever read this write-up on Bo’s career with all the crazy highlights of what he did on the field?

Probably one of the better baseball articles I’ve ever read, it’s tremendously fun. It’s stuff like this that really makes you think What If? regarding Bo’s baseball career.

He should have at least 3 of those awards but it just wasn’t meant to be. FWIW I think he should have won it over Lee.

Zach Greinke’s not a one-year phenom. He’s for real. As long as he’s not pitching at U.S Cellular Field.

Even considering he played, like, 9 games a year in football?

I wonder if anybody else will ever attempt to two-sport it. Deion Sanders was the last to really try it, and he was decent at his peak, but that was it.

I don’t think so. The salaries are so much higher from where they were back then and the financial risk has increased just as much. I don’t think the owners from that particular sport will allow it.

Though it isn’t an actual sport Pacman Jones tried to get into pro wrestling but his team then the Tennessee Titans wouldn’t have any of it. They eventually compromised but he still couldn’t wrestle. These guys are taking no chances. But then again Karl Malone and Dennis Rodman did wrestle but that was a long time ago.

I think the days of the two sport player is gone. They won’t even let these guys wrestle. There’s no way they’ll let them play football or baseball.

LeBron’s the closest, ability-wise. He could easily be a decent to great receiver in the NFL.

He’s probably the least likely guy in the world to do it though, it’d be absolutely insane for him to do anything that would put his basketball career at risk.

A two sport player is definitely possible if one guy was really good at golf though. If we even consider that a sport.

Some of the NBA guys are really good at bowling. It wouldn’t surprise me if some of them are good enough to cross over to pro bowling.

Don’t remember. All I know is there is some pattern. It goes downhill during the summer until mid-late aug and then they it pick up the rest of the way.

Still a lot of games left and I’ll keep rooting for them.

Because you’re loyal. And you know that it’s only destined that all of Toronto’s teams fail hard before the chosen team arrives to end your pain. Either by winning a title or causing all of you to commit mass suicide.

Maybe it’ll be the Toronto Bills.

Didn’t Deion Sanders also play football/baseball?

PRIME TIME!
