MK9 | News & Discussion (Updated as news happens!)

I dont think you’re giving the game a fair shake. Which is understandable considering that MK games have been straight shit like you’ve said.

You’re saying that the game will never live up to UMK3. But we’ve not even played it yet. You’re probably right, but I don’t think that at this point in time it’s worth it to make that comparison until the game’s been played.

As far as the button layout is concerned, I can understand why you’d be upset that it’s being changed, but again - Is it fair to judge if it hasn’t been played with, yet?

I know that it’s hard to keep faith in Mortal Kombat past UMK3. I do feel they’re actually trying to get it right this time, though. And it may not be as hype as UMK3. That doesn’t mean that there’s no room for it to be a good game, either.

Played hella mk9 at pax. The button layout is front punch, rear punch on top row. front kick, rear kick on bottom row. some moves have been changed from double tap motions but not all. Kitana fan throw is now d,f+1 but the lift is b,b+2. one of the shoulder buttons does the stance change. I don’t think it does anything.

Yeah, I was posting from my iPhone and I wasn’t paying attention and listed front punch/kick as lead punch/kick. Shrug.

Anyway, what’s the game like? Did you enjoy it? What did you like specifically? What would you like changed?

Yeah, I heard about the motion change from a Kitana video. I was under the impression they changed all of them. I shall correct my previous post. Did they not change the B,B because there’s no backdash?

Anyway, what I have to say about them changing the names from low/high kick/punch to front/rear or whatever it is, meh, far as I’m aware, it’s just a superficial/cosmetic change. It’s like SF going from jab, strong etc. to lp, mp etc. But I could be mistaken. Still, since the characters are going to be more individualized, maybe the name change makes sense in this case. Again, meh.

I dont think the comparison is fair though, SF2/SF3/SF4 are all completley different games but great in there own right. UMK3 is its own entity and such will be the case with MK9, if anything I think MK9 will play like a evolved MK2 from everything that has been revealed so far.

There is a backdash. There’s still some f,f moves too. I dunno why they changed some moves.

What theyre calling the normals makes no difference because they’re not the same as the old games. front punch is not a replacement for high punch. It’s like the rest of the 3d games where everyone just has random attacks.

I enjoyed it but this isn’t classic 2D MK. It’s closer to MK vs DCU without sidestepping.

Based on what I’ve seen it looks like “front/back” is essentially just “weak/strong.”

Front/Back basically just corresponds to which limb is in the “front” and “rear” of the stance.

From what I’ve noticed, you can cancel forward dashes with, at the very least, jumps, so it’s likely they’d be able to be cancelled with attacks. My bets on them giving Kitana a B,B input for lift is to fit in with her “zone queen” design…she’d be able to backdash to force whiffs and lift on reaction, and the changing of fan throw to D,F is so that accidental fans don’t come out when trying to use her seemingly good dash to advance.

Well thought out. I think that could be true.

Talks more about competitive MK. A few interesting tidbits.

I thought I saw Kung Lao throw break Sub-Zero, but it was probably Sub whiffing the throw.

this is what I was scared of, my high hopes off this game are gone.

I hope I get proven wrong though.

From looking at these videos I dont see any resemblance to MKDC other than animation. It seems to me that this will play more similarly to street fighter than any previous mk, I dont really care though. I also think that people are too keen on comparing games (including me just now…). If we want this reboot to succeed then it needs to be looked at from the perspective of a reboot, not a sequel.

I might just be blowing smoke because I really don’t want this to suck.

Regarding speed, everything can be tweaked, there is still alot of development time.
No matter what, I will still be playing this when it comes out.

edit: Remember at the MVC3 e3 demo when it was as slow as TVC, now it is nearly as fast as MVC2. That only took a month or two between demo builds. I will keep my sense of optimism because I already like what I’ve seen and I know this team is trying to do right by us.

Would be nice but track record has proved that they will not adjust anything in the MK games before they are released or they have released anything recently with great game play. The game looks amazing. I just hope I have a decent fighter underneath the great presentation that goes with it.

I don’t think NR Studios will go back to actual classic MK. Tbh, if we didn’t have MKDC to compare, it honestly would be close to classic to more people than not.

I’m going to remain hopelessly naive for this game, I want it be to good so bad. And from what I’ve seen so far, it’s shaping up nicely. I like how it all seems to flow, like Marvel. That’s what frustrates me about SF4, maybe I just don’t understand the system enough yet, but I don’t get that sense of flexibility and creativity, and I like that in my fighting games. Not saying that everything should seamlessly chain together, but I’d like to think and get rewarded for trying something.

My friend is a MK fanatic, so I’m hoping for some crazy local matches upon release. He’s also salty because I beat his ass on every other fighting game apart from MK.

Lol, don’t go looking for creativity in SF4, there is none. Game should be renamed to Script Fighter 4. Follow the script and then it comes down to whoever deviates from said script first loses. Boring, imo. You want creativity look elsewhere my friend.

That being said, I am f’ing stoked for this game. Can’t get here quick enough.

It looks like they’re trying, and I commend them for that. I’m not a fan of the block button, it just feels ‘odd’ in a non-weapons based fighter. But I’ll give it a chance. The character movement looks a little stiff, but it could be just as well as people mashing and trying to figure things out. It doesn’t look like normals do any chip dmg on block. Needs tech-throw or throw-soften. I don’t know about those X-ray moves. I just get the feeling that a typical match will be about getting a 2-3 hit combo, then X-ray move for 50% dmg.

Throw techs have been confirmed in in a couple vids.

And X-Rays, so far, do no more than 40% damage, and get pretty massively scaled in combos. There’s also enhanced moves and combo breakers to use meter for…so my guess atm is X-Rays are basically like SFIV’s supers in that it’s hard to build the meter for them, but they have such a great reward for getting them.

Combo-breakers?! I like. Thanks for the info.
