Can you link that? Can’t seem to find that post on his blog, or any mention of MK.

Tokido spelled MK with a C, which is probably the reason why you didn’t catch it. This just confirms the one MK Japanese stream ran by Frida that we will see Japanese players at EVO for MK.

Doesn’t the tutorial say you only have to push one of the two throw buttons to tech it? 1 or 4? (that may or may not be the correct notation.)

I just went into training mode and testing throwing breaking, and it is just like demo.

neutral or back throw breaks with 1 or 3

forward and throw breaks with 2 or 4.

no visual way to confirm which throw is being used, so it’s a true 50/50.

So either the tutorial is flat wrong, or I just wasn’t paying attention to that part. Oops.

thx.

The inputs in this game are so off sometimes. Like some things come out too easy and others only with fast/strict timing. The kano ball actually works with the totally wrong inputs. The motion is f,d,b,f but it actually comes out if you do f,d,b,u

(bolded)Incidentally that’s what Kano Ball’s input was in MK1.

dunno if this was mentioned before, but did anyone notice how the game buffers the previous input? like, you can cancel into specials just doing the directions… like, instead of doing j.K d,b 4 you can just go j.K d,b and the special will come out anyway

anyone find a use for this? like, does it maybe make the specials come out a frame faster? I’m interested (and hoping) that there’s a use for this, coz so far its done nothing but annoy me when I’m trying to do some Ermac combos…

Yeah I’m getting the same problem with Ermac every now and then, getting the Projectile instead of TKS when I try to do 1,2, TKS. It’s horrible for Jax though.

Could take advantage of the negative edge and do, for example with Ermac’s 1,2 TKS, quickly do 1, 2, 1 (hold it), down, back. If you hit and hold the second 1 before 2 hits and do the down back motion the TKS will come out. Personally this is kind of unnecessary as I’ve never had problems with the negative edge but there you go, this could probably help. Tell me a combo to do with Jax that you feel is hindered by the negative edge buffer, and I’ll check it out, see if there’s an easier way to make sure the right move comes out.

So a friend of mine asked me “MK9 is my first fighting game and I suck at it, what can you tell me to get good?” and I found myself writing a pretty lengthy “mini-guide”. So I thought I’d share it. Any criticism or things to add would be extremely welcome!

Go into training mode.

Practice all of your characters chain combos until you can pull each one off from memory, then keep practicing.

Understand that most chain combos are special cancelable off of all but the last hit.

Understand that this game is unlike most other fighters, in that you need to commit to your combo before it comes out, due of the dial-a-combo system that this game uses.
This means several things:
-This game does not, for the most part, allow hit-confirming. Meaning that you can not do “crouching light, crouching light, XYZ combo” like you can in SF4, 3rd Strike, MvC, Blazblue, etc.
-If you want big damage, you have to commit. This doesn’t mean that you can’t poke around with small, safer combos, but you’ll find that the safer combos don’t generally lead to very big damage.
-That being the case, understand risk vs reward, and only risk putting yourself in a bad situation if it means the reward for connecting the combo is greater than or equal to the risk of having it blocked.

Familiarize yourself with all of your specials. What do their EX versions do? What can you use them for?
-Combo starter?
-Combo ender?
-Anti projectile?
-Anti Air?
-Continuing a juggle?
-Mixup?
This list goes on.

Learn which combos set up juggles, and which string of normals can be performed on an opponent in a juggle state. Some characters like Smoke and Liu Kang can perform some of their basic ground combos on a juggled opponent for several reps, and end with a special or super.

Understand that most, if not all punch normals can be dash canceled, and that a dash can also be canceled into block, a normal, or a special.
Good use of dash canceling would be:
-Dash forward uppercut (crouch heavy punch) to anti-air a poor jump in.
-Dash blocking. Used for quickly and safely moving forward and pushing your opponent into the corner. Excellent for getting through projectile spam without being forced to jump in, which is almost never a good idea. Dash blocking can and should also be used to break Sub-Zero Ice Clones, forcing him to have a 4 second cool-down before he can use another one.

ALWAYS try to sit on at least one and a half bars of super meter. Unless absolutely necessary, don’t ever leave yourself without meter. To elaborate:
-If you have 1 and a half bars and you start to get combo’d you’ll quickly have enough to break the combo before it gets out of hand.
-That being said, don’t needlessly breaker a combo unless you’re close to losing the round.
-Try to refrain from use of X-ray unless it’s going to kill the opponent.
-Only spend on an EX special if it’s truly worth it. Make wise investments. Make sure you’re familiar with your specials EX properties, as many EX versions of move’s don’t necessarily add damage.
For Example:
~Raidens EX Psycho Crusher has one hit of super armor, but gains no extra damage buff for being EX’d. Many people use it as an anti-projectile. But does it make sense to waste that EX bar at the beginning of the round to counter their first or second projectile and only score something like 12% damage? Wouldn’t it be smarter to save the bar and catch them when they aren’t expecting it, later in the round? Why risk putting yourself in a dangerous position by wasting a bar that can earn you a breaker later on? Make smart choices when it comes to using meter.

I’m burnt, but I hope this helps.

this has already been discussed on TYM but, you don’t have to negative edge. apparently, you buffer the joystick motion at the same time you press the button needed for the special attack.

for example, i don’t play Jax, but for Ermac say you want to FP, BP, TKS. it’s FP (at the same time input D,B), BP. TKS will end the combo. conversely, if you want to end the combo with air blast. it’s FP, BP + D,B. you should be able to hit the combo you want effortlessly.

quick remainder, offcast stream is up and theyre finishing up grand finals from last weeks tournament.

I think… I love Aris. I was cracking up during all of his comments on stream.

EDIT: Oh yeah, and his Smoke was fantastic.

awesome news, i allready thought fixing online was a smart move for them since you gotta pay for online if you dont have the retail version. But you never no tho so im glad its confirmed

I’ve had the game for a week now and I still can’t understand why Baraka’s damage output is so horrible. I mean, he’s got blades inside his fucking arms. He doesn’t seem fast enough for pure rushdown and getting up in there to mix them up. I don’t doubt he’s got tools to push them into the corner, but how are you gonna land them? What are you going to do when they’re in the corner against someone like Johnny Cage? He’s going to walk all over you with how much faster he is. It also seems like all his combos need to start with jump-in punches just to land 3x%, that’s laughable compared to pretty much most of the cast. He’s got a string starting with a low, but it doesn’t seem like you can really hurt them when it lands. Unlike Liu Kang who can do that shit over and over until you’re cornered then you’ve gotta guess which way from sunday he’s going to rape your face.

It’s slightly annoying, because his moves both look and sound awesome. When they land you can hear them tearing into fools. Chop Chop would have them holding in their guts like a cheesy Vietnam war movie. He had a lot of potential but he needs more love.
