MK9 | News & Discussion (Updated as news happens!)

They said they could do this without you having to update the game.

ermac’s alt outfit looks sick but his regular does to…

Still dont know who to main tho

I hope Nightwolf was patched to juggle four times with the Tomahawk, it’s just crazy talk he can’t already. Oh, also good to see UltraDavid taking an interest in this game, I’m sure his grapple skills will be as impressive as they are annoying.

Ed Boon was quoted as saying in an interview recently, that they could implement balance changes without the user needing to download a patch.

Not sure how I feel about that. Especially if they’re not going to give us a changelist. As, like in your situation, you could create a completely viable tactic only to turn up at a tournament the week after and find that none of your set ups work due to a stealth update.

I’m really excited to see how this game does at Evo. Just judging from people I follow on twitter (from the gaming and SF4/MvC3 universe) there is definitly significant interest in MK9. Justin Wong seems to be enjoying it.

For me, since getting it it’s been all about adjustment. The last Mortal Kombat I played was 6 or something, and since then I’ve been in Capcom fighting game world (with a bit of Blazblue). Just re-adjusting to the blocking system is taking me time. Really impressed that whilst I’m noobing it up everyone’s releasing some seriously decent day 1 combo vids lol.

yea that the same problem with me, trying to remember to hold block while i am getting hit with a string or remember that projectiles go trough each other is hard to get use too. also i hope they do something with the online to improve it. i don’t get much offline experience with street fighter and it just sucks trying do any kind of practice online in mk.

still i am finding raiden to be a lot fun and he might replace scorpion as my main. although i think learning raiden going to be tougher then scorp.

Nah not really, Raiden has some pretty braindead easy combos and is one of the stronger characters in the game I would say. Storm God would be a good switch if you aren’t feeling Scorpion.

Kung Lao is the best character in the game by a wide margin.

he’s reall good, but best?

why so?

he does have some corner rape combos, but he dosent do that much mid screen, does he? like a mid screen bnb does around 30% without meter

I am also curious why he is best by a WIDE margin. I think he is a beast (perhaps the best) but I dunno if it is by a wide margin.

The reason I say this is because Kung Lao has most of the fastest, safest attacks. I am of the firm belief that his Spin attack is the best move in the game. It is fully invincible from start to finish, comes out in somewhere around three frames, launches, and is difficult to punish if someone sees it coming. He can combo into it from any one of his incredibly safe jab strings. His dive kick is fucking fast. His normals are fucking fast. His projectiles are fucking fast. He’s fucking Rufus on crack. I don’t see how anybody can touch him. Ever. At all.

well the dive kick is very unsafe on block.

but the spin is fucking amazing.

i think he’s good, but i wouldnt call him best by far. lots of characters have safe strings that launch or extend combos

like i said tho, spin+corner rape is damned good tho

His spin is Godlike I absolutely agree. That move is super cheap.

his jab strings are awesome too, however, there are a few characters who have similar strings.

His dive kick is terribly unsafe on block… thus not making it completely spammable. It definitely is very quick and can catch you off guard easy… but if someone is dive kick happy (like you eluded to with the Rufus on crack reference) block and punish that shit.

His Projectile is good but I don’t feel projectiles are that great in this game overall. More used for keeping other players honest rather than trying to zone. You try and zone you are gonna get bopped.

Kung Lao top 5? Easy. Best? Possibly. I just don’t think it is a wide margin.

Yeah while Kung Lao is indeed fucking good, I have to say not the best as well. I’d only really fear him if he worked me into a corner to do some of those ridiculous combos. Other than that his damage output is modest and a breaker or two will keep his ass off of you. Spin whoring can be done yeah but hey, it’s part of the game, I’ll just like lightning bolt them.

im really impressesed with this game overall. most of the characters seem strong. and NRS seems to be interested in helping things stay balanced

I will tell you who can be a bitch to fight is Jade. That move that turns her into a glowing booger helps her to win zoning wars if you get in one. She also has that one move where she uses her stripper pole to get high in the air and to me that thing has the craziest hitbox rames in terms of horizontally and vertically.

I really shouldn’t have said “wide margin”, that was very extreme of me. I think he has the strongest rushdown in the game and I think he has the best defensive attack in the game, and that makes for a very strong character. He isn’t unbeatable, but I do think he’s probably the best overall character.

Yea and that is a definite possibly. As a player who primarily plays Kung Lao I always feel once I get in an establish offense I am in complete control of the match. My spin I can just tack on at the end of things to make me safe. If I land a dive kick in the corner I can be flirting around 50% damage.

Some characters I have noticed give me some problems… specifically Jade. It isn’t a bad matchup really but I just have to totally play a much different and smarter style.

I will say there are a shitload of “safe” characters in this game. This is my first MK game and thats what I always thought MK games were about mostly. Starting pressure and how well you maintain it without slipping up, I could be wrong but from watching old MK footage I always got that idea.

I know I stated this before but I think Johnny Cage is also mad scary. Another character who has some ridiculously safe shit (that Shadow Flip Kick is an answer for some many situations). 40% damage off of a RAW overhead in the corner without XRay. His XRay, although a counter, very damaging. All his BnB’s push you very far getting him to the corner easy. Overhead and Sweep are both +1 on block… so far I have had my most “braindead” fun per se using Cage. Get in, starting abusing cheap moves, victory lol.

Oh plus Johnny Cages fatality #2 is OP and should be banned… that shit is too good.

Stryker is like, one of the weirdest fucking characters I’ve ever played in a fighting game. Not calling him bad at all, but trying to learn him is… odd. I can’t even put my finger on it either he just has some weird juggles it feels like.

i read a rumor (on tym i believe) that part of the day 1 patch included removing a cyrax infinite. maybe in fixing that, they changed some of his other properties, and released the fix closer to day 3 than day 1?

Stryker is the next character I plan on learning. I love my earth realm characters.
