Where can we park?
alot of parking on either side of the campus. dorm side and university side. parking is free also.
and ps3 is standard. i dont know why you keep saying its been on 360 alot:lame:. go check the major tourney threads. all ps3!!!
so your not running it mc. the owner is.?. like i said brawl players dont like the 70-20-10 split which is standard for all fighting games
who is running what. allow me to run sf4 please and u go run ur brawl tourney.
for the entry fee and cover charge you need to have more than just 1 person run it.i agree. i dont want to wait an hour after to start playing and get bored and tired.
mm in 3s or sf4?
ok i need to ask this.
so the entry fee for that specific game is going towards the overall pot and $10 cover fee is not included in the pot? what ever happen to throwing tournies for the community and players rather than greedy owners?
+1
Which is why in September I’m doing my best to run a major tournament in San Antonio cause this Gamelot dude is extremely shady and greedy. This dude is not about the community at all, trust me. Granted the economy is hurting, but for us, this is all a hobby, not a job…
Couple of things:
Nori if you and the Soul Calibur peeps don’t mind having your PS3s be used for SF4 (I assume you are at least entering) that would be cool.
Assume PS3 is the standard and if we have left over TVs to fill they will have 360s running.
**Also I don’t see why everyone keeps bitching about the owner. **He’s a bit kooky, puts people off with his jokes and all, and yes he’s all business… because he IS a business man. What a surprise!
As for the pot split, its MY personal decision. Standard this, standard that, 3rd place deserves more money because of things like splitting and the venue fee. It sucks to be 3rd place and you didn’t even make back your money, because you had to pay your entry fee and venue fee.
**As for people that just plain don’t like Gamelot…
**
keep trying, I have yet to find a better venue that doesn’t charge me a base rate so I don’t have to risk losing money on holding a tournament, not to mention he already have a ton of TVs to use right from the get go.
People saying shit like oh he’s shady, he’s greedy: BACK YO SHIT UP! What do any of you have to say about any of the tournaments I’ve ran there being shady? Everyone has gotten paid, no one was left hanging. The math all checks out too, all the time every time. Gamelot is no Planet Zero.
**
he’s not about the community: **Well guys his deal is card games, oh well. He bitches and whines about gamers who show up late to all the tournaments (compared to card players that always show up early and they do), but oh well he’s the owner. Just be glad you don’t have to work with him, and I’m at the receiving end of his wrath when he gets upset.
Besides… free console game nights? Yeah what a douchebag:rolleyes: ya know other places charge by the hour right?
People act like the 5 dollar venue fee is a fucking crime: that’s the only thing he makes money off of. I know I would like to offer a discount for people who bring consoles, but he won’t budge from that because it would eat a lot into what he makes… which is understandable, considering he ya know, tries to make it a worthwhile investment to pay for the TVs he buys to help make tournaments run better. He wants to also buy consoles, but only if he can make money to pay it off. He recently sold the arcade machines he was losing money on, so that may become more of a reality soon.
/end rant
In all seriousness I don’t knock anyone trying to hold another tournament, it’s a chance for me to relax and let someone else do the work so I can enjoy playing in a tournament instead of running it. So props to you if you can find a good venue, I wish you the best, and I can always offer my experience and promotion skills to support it.
-Our PS3s can be used for SF4 or SC4, whatever is going to make everything run smoother, regardless if we enter for SF4 or not.
-The owner is greedy. You should never have to pay a venue fee if you bring a full setup, and this is the FIRST tournament he’s waiving the venue fee
-I have ran countless major tournaments w/out a venue fee.
-He’s a businessman trying to make money on something he shouldn’t. Like Spin said (and he’s been around just as long as me, if not longer in the tourney scene) and when people ran tournaments, they did it for the community. They didn’t need to be paid. Owners didn’t need to be paid cause they were getting business.
-Gamelot is not PlanetZero, you’re right. They don’t have sponsors and don’t give a shit about games, really. Say what you want about PlanetZero (and THAT OWNER is shady as fuck too) but they always have the latest games. PZ is an arcade. Gamelot is for pokemon dorks. It’s completely different, apples and oranges.
-I used to run tournaments here all the time. If you think he’s the only show in town, that’s just plain ignorance. I’ll find a venue and talk to the SA community (and houston/dallas/austin) and if they want a summer tournament, I’ll give them one. It’s incredibly easy to just go to a hotel/motel, secure the venue, get TVs and get it done. Back in the TTT days, the community got a hotel venue, provided TVs, systems and never any problems.
-If the pot split is YOUR decision, it is a terrible one. No other word I can think of. I have an easy solution and this goes out to ANY PARTICIPANT reading this thread:
**If you are concerned about 3rd place, get 1st or 2nd. Problem solved, and the old school guys know this is true.**Find me a tournament where 3rd is 15%. You are taking money from the 1st and 2nd place guys, and it’s wrong. True competitors don’t complain about 3rd place money, they are lucky they evened out.
W/your logic, everybody should get a trophy like we were in little league baseball and as long as the parents pay, everybody wins.
-If he really wants to make it better for everybody, maybe he is asking the wrong guy for help. Maybe it’s a harsh statement, but I’m only saying what people are thinking. I have never once tried to make money off the community. He shouldn’t be paying you for a damn thing. You should WANT to do it for free. Spin, myself, and quite a few others in SA would do it for free if we know it’s done right. You are getting paid, sure, but we are paying. Now that I’m paying for a tournament, I am a customer. Therefore, customers pay for something expect every tournament to be roughly the same.
When I go to mcdonalds and get chicken mcnuggets, I know there is white meat and it’s battered. They are all the same, no questions, to keep consistency. Imagine arriving at mcdonalds and it’s dark meat and grilled. You are grilling it to make SOME people happy, when the majority of your customers are scratching their heads.
Overall, don’t change a formula that has been working for 2 decades. Money seems to be the problem w/you and him. Keep up w/the tournament standard if you are running tournaments. It’s as simple and black and white as that brother. Maybe you are trying to do too much and can’t handle it. I don’t know you and I’m not going to assume anything, but what you are doing, it’s not working. If you want to attract the hardcore gamer (it’s a rhetorical statement, that’s what you want), you need to stick to what they are used to and what makes them all happy.
And none of this is to push you out or tell you to stop running tournaments. I honestly don’t want you to think that. It’s just that, tournaments are our hobby. Maybe you don’t take it seriously, but w/a shitty economy, wives/gfs, parents, jobs, friends, etc we play games to enjoy them and escape. Therefore, when we show up to a tournament, it’s our relax time, our vacation time and we really don’t like it messed with. If you need help or aren’t sure on something, ask.
“For the community”, yes I know. People tend use that in the wrong way so they don’t have to pay as much. It takes money to run tournaments, if anything for the space it uses, unless say it’s a house tournament (and I don’t have a house to do that, so I have to rent out a space). Not mention the use of Gamelot’s TVs and electricity, as well as a mess that sometimes gets leftover.
In the end SOMEBODY has to pay for stuff, and quite frankly I really don’t have money to pay for a space myself just so everyone else can play in the tournament. Taking donations? If people complain about a 5 dollar venue fee than donations aren’t any different.
For example: My friend Austin ran a tournament in Austin for Melee, but to pay off the rent for the hall he used he needed at least 50 people x $5 at the door. Only 30 showed up and he was stuck paying over $100 to cover the difference. Having to fork up that much money and having people only say it’s “for the community” kinda bothers me.
I keep doing tournaments because I want the scene to stay alive. Right now I’m pretty much the only person in San Antonio doing stuff besides Chickenwing. Without organized events who would bother to practice as much? Without a local gathering place, people wouldn’t be compelled to take fighting games seriously.
Obviously you are new to the scene. I wasn’t aware of that. So first, welcome. No sarcasm, I mean it. I’m the one who got Chickenwing into tournaments. I taught him how to do things (even though sometimes I feel he didn’t pay attention;)) so yes, I’m well aware who does what in this city.
-Before you, there were PLENTY of guys running tournaments here. Back in Soul Calibur 2 days, there were tournaments every other week, people traveled more, it was great. However, we tried not to make it expensive for anybody. I sometimes did $20 entry fee (to make sure their pot was bigger) and did $5 venue fee. Nobody ever had a problem w/that, because they always knew where the money was going. If people brought a setup, their venue fee was waived. The fact it took THIS long for “bring setup, venue fee waived” to happen is nothing short of scary.
-Have you ever heard of TiT? It’s the most famous tournament in texas (you can also argue TX Showdown is in houston). There is 1k guaranteed pot every year. Eddy Pistons always runs this tournament. You know what he did this year to cover the rest of the 1k? He put $500 of his OWN money! If people show up, he gets his money back. If he doesn’t, he’s fucked.
Now, I’m not saying you have to shell out 100-500 of your own money, don’t miss my point. But EP, nor me, have ever gotten PAID to do what we love. I could be wrong, but I don’t think Spin has ever gotten paid either (I don’t exactly know him THAT well, maybe he has, but I’m going to go w/no for now). CW and YOU are the new people who are doing this for money.
-You also failed to address where I clearly pointed out your mistake in the 3rd place pot at %15. It’s silly, and there is no defense for it. If you feel I’m wrong, go post in the houston/dallas/austin threads, or better yet, outside of TX and ask them how they feel about 15% for 3rd place. You know how to fix 3rd place? After you give them their money, tell them to get 1st or 2nd. Then again, I have NEVER had that problem w/3rd place complaining about more money. The guy who always gets REALLY screwed is 4th place. But you know what? If it’s a big tournament, I can almost guarantee 4th place won’t complain, because tournaments aren’t supposed to be about the payout or getting your money back. It’s about winning. We don’t enter tournaments for the payout, but when we do, it needs to be correct.
-Also, isn’t this supposed to be a big event? Why aren’t you advertising? I don’t see any posts in the austin/houston/dallas thread. You can’t just go into the SA thread once and say “hey guys, tournament on this date, see you there” and expect a big turnout. That is a waste of our time, and your time.
If you want a better idea of how much we love this hobby (and this game, sf4), look at last fri (or 2 fridays ago) where the SA guys drove up to Austin to play SF4. They probably went out and drank and did other social things, but their main purpose was to play the Austin guys. The Austin guys are SPENDING MONEY AT AN ARCADE to keep playing and to play competition. Now you’re asking yourself “why don’t they just play at home? It’s free and almost no lag!”. You are right. But when you strive to be the best at this game, that’s what you do.
If you are going to run tournaments, strive to be the best tournament director like we strive to compete. The owner is looking at this as a small business. Believe me, running a local SA tournament is painfully easy, so if he thinks we all HAVE to go to Gamelot, he’s in for a rude awakening.
Sorry to bust up the mojo of the rants, but maybe some of this is better suited for PMs. But then again, it’s not my thread, so yall do what you want…
Serious question…is there a specific building we’re looking for? I’ve never been to Our Lady of the Lake so specific directions would be awesome!
I’ll take you up on the MMs in 3s, Spin. I’ll do 3 out of 5 for $10, no char change. Got a couple of ideas for some fun matches too if you’re down:
Unblockable Fest!!! (Urien vs Urien, 3 out of 5 for $5)
360 Fest!!! (Hugo vs Hugo, SA1, 3 out of 5 for $5)
My dreads are better than yours!!! (Sean vs Sean, 3 out of 5 for $5)
That being said, I need to practice my taunt to SA3 links.
nori is correct. i didnt read everything but i ran tournies for ddr and kof 98 and 2k2 back in ddr 3rd mix days. i donated money for people to play @ the arcade. you do this 1st hand to show ur a serious gamer and care about the community. which brings people back( sorry gamelot hasnt there for nobody goes there anymore)
-yes you are keeping the scene alive. but not for us… for brawl and melee players only i feel. come on i always brought 2 tvs, set ups to your past tournies.
this is only a local thing mc… i mean come on. the venue fee is not even going towards the pot of the tourney. this isnt the amuritsi japan where it was worth to pay the venue fee and also enter a small tourney. if its to cover the cost of the tvs/ then shit ill bring my own.
lol. hes not posting it in other tournies cause he knows gamers wont pay extra if its not going towards the pot.
lol… we practice to be the best i believe. i mean there is no mvc2 scene here but i can guarantee only a small few from all of texas can beat some of the mvc2 players here.
it takes money to run tournaments… no it doesnt… by having tournies @ the arcade/ venue. your bringing customers to that place and not another. not being rude but you need some business marketing 101.
anyways. ill show up. its a block away. but if i dont see the venue being worth $10 extra then count me out.
sorry for me starting this rant when i feel this should of been kept @ the sa thread and not ruining it for MC and these “rants” on a tourney thread. but u didnt even ask us players “customers” how we feel about the split and u based it off of your decision solely and ur profit.
to mexiwont.
urien “accepted"
sean” accepted"
hugo… boring. how bout gen jen(yun)… whos hat twirls faster mm
mexi… PAUL>>> wtf its like right out side of my house. how can you miss it when you came over dude. lol. oh for urien. taunt ex aegis in the corner, dash back fireball lp>tackle>tackle> aegis unblockable.
well i suck ass at running tournaments, tried once and failed miserably. but i have been in enough to know that nori is right. i’ve been to tournaments that didnt even have cash payout, hell i have been to tournaments where only first place got payed out. winners deserve all the money in my opinion. 2nd is not a winner, third even less. getting third is like passing a class with a 70.00, you should pucker your butthole and be thankful you got through it doing better than you prolly expected.
not like it matters what i say though cause i wont be there to beat ya’ll anyways, i have to work! booo! but hopefully everyone shows upto agustines tomorrow!!
I remember taking Geometry twice in high school, passing with a 71 and I started running around the class like rocky. It was pretty epic. I felt like a champion.
Warning, epic length post coming your way. Also, let’s end the drama here and get on with discussing the actual tournament.
I’ve been in the SRK scene for a year or so, so I’m not new but I’m not OG either. I was playing Street Fighter and other fighters before Brawl came out, and have been playing them more since Melee is smaller than it used to be.
I really wish i could waive the fee for people that bring set ups. but like I’ve said a million times, owner won’t budge. He’s been offering free drinks and snacks from his store now actually (yeah, I know it’s kinda :lame:). And this time around you will get it discounted for my next two Gamelot events. So I know in the past I couldn’t do it but hey summer will have big stuff so I will advertise more.
Well it IS a local tournament, and yeah cuz it’s a con some people are like nah badge ain’t worth it. Although Akon in Dallas was pretty awesome last year, with people like Buktooth, Pozer and Kensou playing. Gameroom staff SUCKED last year though but luckily me and Duggfin (Amazing TO from Houston) will be running stuff. So once I have full details I will be hyping that up.
Umm it still costs to rent most places. Nori just mentioned the $500 Eddy Pistons puts up to cover the rent for his tournament.
The nice thing about Gamelot is 1) I don’t have to risk losing money and 2) There are plenty of TVs already (that don’t lag).
Majors like Final Round and Evo cost tons of cash (arcade machines, hotel, etc) which is why his door fee was $30 bucks. Evo has sponsors… usually, and thus can handle it.
thanks for feeling bad about it:looney: j/k anyways ok so I got a ton of shit for the split, so for the SRK community it’ll be 70/20/10 at whatever I hold next for non smash games. It’s a bit late to change 2 days before this tournament:sweat:, so it’ll have to stay. But I concede! You’ve won this battle :wasted:
Finally, people, I host things for free ya know:karate:. Like that 81-person Street Fighter 4 tournament at UTSA a few weeks ago. I’ve got more tournaments planned for the rest of the semester too, probably HD Remix, another SF4, and Gears of War 2, all free to enter and with some nice prizes.
I don’t even like Brawl and what do you know I have a brawl tournament next friday to run.:looney:
Every convention game room I work at is pure volunteer work, although a free badge is a nice perk.
So please people, lay off trying to say I do tournaments only for profit.
i am all for a tourny, the venue fee is what gets me… thats it, the pot i could care less for since i would take 1st anyway. haha no but seriously the entry fee to the tourny isnt even a prob. even if i had to pay for parking it wouldnt be a prob, what fuckin matters is that fuckin venue fee, cause you cant even come be a spectator for less than ten bucks… boo!!!
just curious, where is this place? i hear gamelot and then i hear OLLU… which one is it, i am too lazy to read the first post
It’s OLLU, just that the owner from Gamelot is bringing all of his equipment there… card games, tabletop, 15 TVs, like half the damn store.
And it’s a convention, so actually… its rather easy to come in, just that there are badge nazi’s for mainly the dealers room and the concert.
U need to pay the 10 dollars to do most stuff.
Alright so the times for the events are final right?
Is it possible to join Brawl and SF4?? Or are they going on at the same time?
Also, say i don’t have a PS3 control. But i have a 360 control Will there be designated PS3 controls for the consoles or not?
Mc Clusky: I’ll talk to you about some more tournament ideas this saturday, as to not further clutter this thread. I’m glad you were open minded enough to see our point about the pot split, so props for that. 70/20/10, none of us will ever complain about.
Hopefully you can use someone’s PS3 controller. I know this was the most difficult part deciding a system (I know there will be pad warriors) but if you’re lucky you can play on the Xbox if your opponent don’t mind, assuming we have a spare TV for a 360.
Also I will be bringing my 360 HRAP stick for all those concerned.
Yeah, I’m down for the hat twirl match. Also, we could do the twin match-up, 3/5 Yun vs Yang, then switch for 3/5. You better have all my money, cause you’re goin DOWN!!!
And yeah dude, I know where the campus is, what I meant was what building/room/landmark/hole in the ground are we looking for and how do I get there once on campus? Little help here?
I’m bored right now so I might drive over there for this.
It will be in the gym. Or you could just see someone wearing a outlandish anime costume and you’ll know where to go by following them >.>
Parking shouldn’t be an issue as far as I know.
