While the LGBT community has their own definition of gender, that definition is not recognized by the U.S. Legal system. A lot of LGBT people lose harassment lawsuits because their cases are built on arguments that use their definition of gender as opposed to how gender is recognized by the courts. I’m not familiar with the Canadian legal system, but I imagine that’s not the case there. Glaad marching up to Canada for the Miss Universe is one thing, but this will not happen in the U.S. Miss America pageant. In any case Trump and NBC are doing this for publicity purposes.
Appealing to the LGBT audience seems like a business savvy decision at first glance…or does it? I don’t doubt that there are LGBT who attend and support Miss Universe. However I question the wisdom of an event traditionally geared towards women suddenly admitting transgendered men. Not every lesbian is automatically a progressive individual. I think you were dead on the mark when you said women contestants and their friends& supporters in the audience wouldn’t be content to have a transgendered man win over them. Especially considering how the demographic of that female audience is all about idealized notions of female beauty. As a male viewer I would have no interest looking at a beauty contest where the contests are not all authentically female. However there are many men who have a drastically different opinion.
I think the result of this will be exclusively female competitions…and I don’t think the trend will spread.
